  Quinn Roux (Gallo Images)

Cape Town - Another young star is set to leave Western Province and the Stormers, with lock Quinn Roux reportedly heading to Ireland.

Die Burger was reliably informed that the 21-year-old Roux will join Leinster at the conclusion of the Super Rugby tournament.

Roux was a star for Western Province is this year's Vodacom Cup, helping them win their maiden title with a final win over Griquas in Kimberley.

Roux was schooled at Affies in Pretoria but came through the WP junior structures from Under-19 level. He was initially touted by many as a better prospect than now Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth when the duo emerged as rising lock stars in the Cape.

Roux made his Super Rugby debut for the Stormers earlier this month against the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld He was impressive in his 29 minutes on the field as the Stormers upset their arch-rivals 19-14.

This would be a disaster! How in the world can you let a talent like this go!!!!!!!

One wonders whether SARFU needs to help Unions keep strategic players from leavin SA. This is the pits.

Roux maybe doing himself short here. If Etzebeth can crack the boks surely he has a chance to do the same as many rate him better than Etzebeth. Probably was offered a mint!

Please tell ou bedpan that it is always wise to have a plan B. Hahahahahahahahahaa you can tell the wee mong has never played sport in his life. But at least he knows that its wise to get your kicks over  - making all the other mongs look real  bad. Bwahahahahahahahahahhaha what a comedy.

Bythe way snapster the reason Alistair did not pick Quinn was becasue he was injured. I see there is a question mark over whether Quinn will start against Lions because of a niggle hopes he does. De kock will then play 7 and be reasoanbly good there.

I wonder what is stopping anyone overseas outfit snapping up Goosen. Shouldnt be too difficult givenFree State dont have a lot of money.

Some plan really does need to be put in place. Some overseas outfits would love to have Goosen. The offer could be on its way. SARFU needs to identify the players it has to keep and work with the unions to ensure that it happens!

Seriously...

Who the F cares if Quinn Roo decides to leave.

Its not like he was anywhere in the pecking order anyway!

And thats exactly why he left! He knows that he is a long way down the line for national honours.

To be honest, I'm happy for him!

Let him go play in Ireland where he has a chance of making it into the 6th best side in the world.

I'd prob do the same if i wasn't good enough to make it here.

Bring on Elstedt, Etzebeth, Kruger, Willemse, du Toit... hell even fat Flippie!

Chip, that is poor form. If you knew your stuff you would realise that this kid is highly rated, was included in Meyers Bok training camp and could easily have come close to selection within a year or so. Its sad you don't give a shit, crap attitude really. I find it sad that a potential Bok might have slipped the net

Beeno, I'm talking about from the start of the S15, Coetzee had Steenkamp in the squad ahead of Roux - poor call and probably contributed to him leaving. He must have been pissed off that the average Steenkamp was ahead of him in the pecking order

Roux has signed a one year deal with leinster. The plan seems for him to return in 2013. This is a short term move to pick up experience. I think it will be vqluable for his career if he does not get injured in the North. He will learn alot reagrding forward play and get gametime in tight Physical Affairs.

Without insulting anybody - let me refer to an old saying:   "Talk is cheap - money buys the whiskey"    We cannot keep a professional from leaving SA and it is not possible to stop people from leaving.    A rugby career is short and the money he earns is important to secure him for life.

I do know that Roux is not in the starting line up on Saturday - he is on the bench.   I understand the selection - if you look at the team and the loosies.  The idea is to bring on Roux and move Steenkamp to 7 - if things go bad in the loosie department.

Now back to Roux.   I think that he must do what is best for him financially - if he moves out it will not be permanent - thereis always a way for him to come back from Leinster and as the holdres of the Heineken cup - they are a top outfit nd he can really make a name for himself there.

Obviously nobody likes South African professionals to leave - but we live in a global village nowadays and we better realize that.

@Ek

Total nonsense!

Why would a SA player go to IRELAND to gain experience?

Its like an I.T. developer from Microsoft going to get experience at Joes PC Repairs in Alberton.

Ireland is not great at rugby, but Leinster is have the form club in europe the last few seasons.

He will learn more about forward play - playing against the massive french forwards, and some of the Welsh and English clubs than playing against the Australian super15 teams who have a flank playing prop- and collapsing before the ball enters the scrum. The game is slower in the North, but the tight forwards are not at all weak.

He is fourth in the pecking order at the Stormers, so basically getting no game time. I get why he'd head for Ireland, get a nice big salary, and get some game time. Easy choice!

Yes thankfully he will be back. I rust Alistari has not left him out in the cold even though fit - he looks to be a huge prospect.

Ex Keo

Stormers coach Allister Coetzee says Quinn Roux’s Leinster contract is for one year only and plans for the young lock to return to the Cape franchise in May 2013.

On Wednesday morning, it was reported that Roux had signed with the European club champions, and that he would join them at the end of the current season. Coetzee has subsequently clarified that while Roux will be moving to Europe, it is a move that could benefit the Stormers in the long term.

‘Quinn sees it as an opportunity to improve as a young lock,’ explained Coetzee. ‘He’s playing behind four locks at this union. While he’s done brilliantly when he’s played, he needs game time.

‘He should be coming back to us in a year’s time. We are working [to finalise his return to the Stormers and Western Province in 2013]. I’m happy for him to go to Ireland as he will get more of an opportunity to play and also enjoy playing alongside guys like [All Blacks World Cup-winner] Brad Thorn.’

Roux is currently one of many second-row options available to the Cape franchise. Andries Bekker and Eben Etzebeth are Springboks, while De Kock Steenkamp and Rynhardt Elstadt have been in the Super Rugby mix for the past few seasons.

In 2012, Elstadt has been used on the blindside flank due to the number of loose-forward injuries suffered by the Stormers, but when the Cape side is restored to its full complement, Elstadt is likely to be used as a specialist No 4.

Jean de Villiers, who played a season for Irish club Munster in 2009/10, said it was a good move for South African players to spend some time abroad.

I enjoyed my experience there and I would encourage anybody with the same opportunity to take it. It would be stupid not to,’ said the Springbok and Stormers captain said.

‘To be based in Europe and earn good money, to have the opportunity to travel the world, and then have the opportunity to come back to South Africa, well it’s a great experience.’

Meanwhile, Stormers wing Danie Poolman will be moving to Irish club Connacht at the end of the season. Coetzee said that the move will be long term and that Poolman intends to become eligible for the Ireland national side.

Again where has this guy been. Young big strong wing.  This is another bad loss. Guys like Gio are getting on and yet we keep loosing the up and coming guys like JJ and Poolman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People judge these guys, but they just want to play rugby. If they aren't getting the opportunities with the Stormers why is there anything wrong with looking elsewhere?? It is sad that they have left, but I feel they both did the right thing.

I am not too phased by loosing Roux for a short while but Poolman looks like he i sgone for good.

Gavin Rich says there is no easy solution to the exodus:

It feels like it has become an almost weekly occurrence – my SMS light flashing with a message asking how the hell yet another South African player has been let slip the net and is heading overseas.

It happened during the series between the Springboks and England, with Wynand Olivier and Ryan Kankowski both being linked to moves to Japan. “How the hell can that be allowed to happen?” it was asked.

Well the answer is that when it comes to Japan it can happen easily, with the lure of the Yen having already played havoc with new Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer’s best-laid plans. The first player to tell him he wasn’t available was Jaque Fourie. While Jean de Villiers has done well at outside centre so far, there is no denying that Fourie’s non-availability has left a massive hole in the depth available.

Fourie is a good example to use when trying to explain why losing a player to Japan is not something that can necessarily be blamed on the union the player leaves. Fourie had verbally committed himself to continuing his career with the Stormers before last year’s World Cup, and all that remained to be done was getting him to sign on the dotted line.

However before that could happen there were two Japanese offers. The first one wasn’t too much of a concern to Western Province as it would have enabled Fourie to continue his Super Rugby career in the same way that Stormers flyhalf Peter Grant has done. But then came the second offer, and as Stormers managing director Rob Wagner himself admitted to me at the time, it was one that no sane person could possibly refuse. (R20 million for two years relatively easy work)

The sort of money we are talking about was enough to kill off any remaining international ambitions for a player who had already played in three World Cups, earning a winners' medal in one of them. I don’t know Danie Rossouw’s position as well as I know Fourie’s, but it was reportedly a similar story with him – when Meyer phoned him he was enjoying his foreign currency fishing on Kariba and he couldn’t understand why Heyneke would think he wanted to play international rugby again.

Then there was Fourie du Preez. There were some critics who were pleased that Du Preez eventually changed his mind about continuing his Springbok career as Meyer’s chosen captain, but it is debatable that they will be as pleased now that we have seen the Boks play three tests without him.

Talented though Francois Hougaard is as a rugby player, his time spent on the wing does appear to have eroded his potential as a scrumhalf, something that his former mentors at the WP Rugby Institute in Stellenbosch warned about a couple of years back. Hougaard is simply not in the same class as Du Preez as a decision-maker or tactical kicker. (Trouble is they are trying to mould him into a Du Preez look alike)

So we know Japan is creating a problem. What can we do about it? Unfortunately very little, for by the accounts of those who have interviewed the players, more than just money is a factor. Du Preez for instance has been quite open about how fed up he became with the ridiculously tough Super Rugby schedule and he is enjoying playing a less frenetic type of rugby and playing less frequently. (Schedule is stupid and can only be managed by having a bigger talent pool)

The removal of the amount of travelling that has to be done has also played a big role in luring other older married players who are concerned about the disruptions to family life caused by having to travel halfway across the world to Australasia twice a year and, if you are a Bok, to the northern hemisphere. There you seldom have to go away from your family for more than a weekend and the flight is never longer than an hour or two.

Then there is the other type of player that leaves the type represented by CJ Stander and Quinn Roux, two young players with immense potential who are reportedly off to Ireland. I was asked in a Supersport.com Q & A last week what I thought Stander’s reasons for leaving were. I didn’t know at the time and I still don’t know, but I was willing to wager that part of it was an understanding that Meyer doesn’t rate him, as shown by his selections thus far.

Roux, if indeed he is heading away at the age of just 21, is probably in the same bracket, though in his case he may see the way blocked by the traffic jam of young locks in the Stormers region. It is a fact that Roux is probably more than good enough to play Super Rugby, but it is even more of a fact that you can only have so many locks in a team.

With most of the playing depth in this country located in the main centres, at the Stormers, Bulls and Sharks, it is inevitable that there will be good players who will end up feeling disaffected and opt to move away if offered the opportunity to earn foreign currency.

The Sharks lost a good one in Gerhard Mostert (Huge loss to the sharks) this time last year, and doubtless there will be more in the coming months. It’s just the way it is and no-one involved in rugby is really at fault. If you want to lay blame, blame the economy.

Yes its financial etc but I think this needs a really big answer tha involves SARFU as well a sthe Unions. We cant afford to let the young talent go.
