Before the last Lions tour a poster on here made a prediction that Ian McGeechan was going outthink Snor and the Lions were going to crush the Boks. McGeechan was a rugby genius according to this worthy…..he would find every weakness in the Bok team. Of course the only real weakness in the series was the Lions’ front row.

Any guesses who our resident genius was?

Well there is at least one other person who knows the answer to this question. Will he speak up or cower in the shadows?

Actually other than Oom in tennis nobody even challenges this poster in terms of botched forecasts.

Spot on Draad it’s Durban July Peeper ….this bag of wind was telling us how we had no chance in the series because of McGeechan…..just as he told us we had no chance in the 2007 WC when Spies withdrew.

2006 and 2007 Spies was a very, very raw player. Kankowski was well ahead of him at that time. Spies got a lot better, but he was overhyped too early and tanked entire tests like Damian does. The loss to Ireland on the 2006 EOYT, all stemming from a Spies lapse gifting three converted tries. It seems we'll always have these players that the plastics fall for, because the media is ignorant and/or blind. The same faces fall for it year after year. Then a player like Pollard falls in our lap, and they join in with the jeering in 2015, booing him off the field for the hapless Lambie. Lügnerin went so far as to blame every Damian flub against Australia that year on Pollard.
Who was it who wanted Pretorius, Julies, Watson, Gary Botha, et al to start in the 2007 WC? Bet it was the same faces.

I really do not know how the gibberish of the Kindergarten Imbecile ties in with the topic under discussion.  It deals with coaches and Mozart is probably right :- at the time I was not a site member - but looking back McGeechen was not the genius he was made out to be.  he had no opposition as to coaching and the Lions did not win the series.

So lets quickly look at the coaching situation: from 2008 to date:-

*   Snorre was a disaster as a coach and nobody would ever prove  otherwise.   He effectively was terminated in 2012 and replaced by Meyer.   Despite being a Springbok coach he cannot find a coaching position even at High school level.

*   Snorre was succeeded  by Meyer and the answer was was he any better than Snoore.   His team selection was chaotic and by mid-2015 it was clear that he was a disaster as a coach.  After his stint as Springbok coach  he coached Stade Francais and his services  were terminated because of gross incompetence on his part.   He is now out of coaching completely.

* Coetzee was the third disaster in a row in Springbok coaching - he was even wore than Meyer and that say something very real.   Like in the case of  Meyer  he was fired  by the Japanese Club he coached and nearly destroyed the club after his Springbok coach.

We have now got the brilliant Erasmus who in 18 months time took the Springboks from being ranked no 7 in the world to number 1 in the world.    Erasmus outwitted jones totally in the WC  final and the indications are he is also going to outwit Gatland.   We will have to see what comes up on Saturday.         .

Say about Snorre whatever you want, but his 2009 record is yet to be beaten. B&I Lions series win, Tri-Nations and 3 - ZIP against the Allblacks, pity we lost one to the Aussies...I'll still take that any day.

He had one of the best Bok teams ever, but his Assistants were Gold and Muir...don't tell me the players coached themselves...somehow Snorre, in his ineptitude created Mr. Been-like magic...miracles do happen. 2009 was a good Bok year...let's hope 2021 comes close at least. Funny how we were world champions every time we faced the B&I Lions since 97...Pity Carel didn't pick a kicker....

Draad

I have no problem with your statement on 2009 - but in 2010 and 2011 he ebcame consistently worse as a coach and it is likely that Muir in particular nd Gold - who later on failed s the Sharks Coach  were the support Snorre need and initially in 2008 and 2009 - but somehow that did not continue in 2010 and 2011.

Incidentally when Erasmus as Director of Rugby of the Stormers and Coetzee was Chief Coach of the franchise in 2008 to 2010  the Stormers did quite well in Super Rugby - when that relationship deteriorated the Stormers starts going backwards in leaps and bounds.   It became really bad when Erasmus left the Stormers in 2012 and became SARU Director of Rugby.

In the latter case the relationship between Erasmus and Meyer did not appear to be iffy at best.   They had two completely different approaches to coaching and team selection and I am not aware of any ways they co-operated. to the benefit of SA Rugby.   When Coetzee was appointed as coach Erasmus publicly welcomed the appointment and approached Coetzee to restore the situation that was successful in 2008 and 2010  in the case of the Stormers and offer to work together.   Coetzee turned dopwn the suggestion and departed for Ireland in 2016.   Foreseeing the upcoming disaster - he insisted on a clause in his contract that Munster will release him from his contract with them should e have to return to SA nd help out the Springboks.

In January he was approached by Mrais and Roux - who pleaded with him to come back to take voer the coaching of the Springboks.   Erasmus put three important conditions in his subsequent contract , which SRU accepted, namely -

*     That he be appointed as Director of Rugby - where eh would be in charge of broader development of SA Rugby with the to be appointed coach will organisatonally fall under him with an additional promise that he would coach the Springboks until after the 2019 WC;

*      That  he would appoint the temporary coaching staff to assist him until the end of the WC - after which the coaching staff recommended by him shall be appointed to the coaching positions in the Coaching positions in the team on a permanent basis; and

*      there shall be no selection committee and the selection fo players shall be the responsibility of the Director of Rugby together with the coaching set-up.\

those are the facts -not the fiction spread on this site.  Erasmus has identified very able assistants and even arranged that oneof his assistants will operate from Dublin to monitor the performances of club players in Ireland, the UK and France  and also liaise  with them.   Erasmus, Nienaber and Jones are  clearly part of the final decision as to use of Club players playing in the NH.   .    .

Maaik, I was and still is no Snôrre fan, nor Gold...I always liked Muir...but between the 3 of them, Matfield, John Smit and Jean de Villiers,  the created some sort of perfect storm that gave us a very good team for about a season and a half...we had some luck for a change it seems.
