In a bold strategic move, Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus has handed the fly-half jersey to Quan Horn for the upcoming clash against the Barbarians. Despite Horn's primary experience at full-back for the Lions, Erasmus is confident in his abilities to adapt and thrive in this new role. The decision comes in light of Handre Pollard's engagement in the United Rugby Championship final and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu's current injury, opening a door for Horn to showcase his skills in a pivotal position.

"Manie has played a lot of rugby in Japan recently and we want to manage him properly," Erasmus explained, underlining the strategic player management at play. "We must also see Handré get through the URC final without injury, while Sacha is currently injured, so it creates an opportunity for us to have a look at Quan." Horn's potential to double as both a fly-half and full-back could provide the Springboks with tactical flexibility in future selections, particularly with a possible 6-2 bench split.

"We know he can play 15, but if he can play 10 and 15, hopefully in future that will help with a 6-2 bench split,"

Erasmus also highlighted Horn's qualities that make him suitable for the fly-half role: "What he does for the Lions, maybe he doesn’t have a 10 on his back, but he certainly comes into the mix a lot as first receiver. We’ve worked with him for three years now in training sessions and we really like the way he takes the ball to the line. He’s an awesome defender, he’s got a really great pass and he’s not afraid if someone runs into that channel, and that’s important for us."

Additionally, Cheslin Kolbe will take on place-kicking duties, a role he has assumed for his club, Tokyo Sungoliath. This adjustment allows Horn to concentrate fully on mastering his responsibilities at fly-half without the added pressure of kicking.

The Springboks coaching staff also sees potential in Vusi Moyo, a promising youngster on the bench. "Vusi, who is on the bench, is one of the guys who really caught the eye in these two weeks. He’s a very calm guy, physical, and kicks without effort," Erasmus remarked, signaling that Moyo might soon find himself in a more prominent role.

With Faf de Klerk returning to the lineup and the inclusion of five uncapped players, the Springboks are clearly gearing up to test new strategies and player combinations against the Barbarians. This match not only promises to be an exciting showcase of emerging talents but also a critical test of the team's depth and adaptability.
