Rassie Erasmus, the mastermind behind the Springboks, openly declared the tactical coup in snagging former England analyst Joe Lewis ahead of the titanic Nations Championship showdown this Saturday at Ellis Park. Lewis, fresh from England's camp during this year’s Six Nations, has crossed battle lines and his insider knowledge could well tilt the scales in favor of the Boks.
Erasmus didn't shy away from acknowledging the strategic upper hand Lewis's appointment might provide. "Without a doubt [it is an advantage]," he admitted. The rugby world is no stranger to this kind of intellectual exchange, but that doesn’t subtract from the potential impact. Erasmus reminisced, "It is like when [assistant coach] Matthew Proudfoot moved away from us in 2019 and the next year we played England."
"There’s a guy called Byron McGuigan and he spent a whole week with us as Sale Sharks coach and I am pretty sure he has a lot of stuff."
The global rugby scene is a revolving door of talent and tactics, with coaches like Eddie Jones making notable moves from England to Australia, and then to Japan, each time carrying a trove of valuable rugby intelligence with him. "Eddie Jones moved from England to Australia and then Australia to Japan so obviously some IP gets transferred and it is the same with Joe," Erasmus explained.
The addition of Lewis comes at a crucial time. Erasmus highlighted the disparity in staffing between rugby powerhouses, noting, "We always had only one analyst but when you look at any of the tier-one nations some have five and I think the French have got eight guys. I know England also have a lot." The urgency to bolster the Boks' analytical capacity was palpable and seizing Lewis was a strategic masterstroke.
Erasmus further praised the depth of knowledge accessible through diverse hires like Paddy Sullivan, an Irishman with extensive experience in the French leagues. "If you get a guy of his calibre available it is just fantastic to have him here and he was available," he added, underscoring the value of having a well-rounded international perspective in the analysis team.
As the Springboks gear up to face England, the addition of Joe Lewis is more than just a staffing change—it's a game-changer, potentially giving the Boks the analytical edge in what promises to be a bruising encounter.
