In a definite sign of intent of an expansive game plan, Hooker Schalk Brits has been added to the Springbok squad and has already joined the group in Bloemfontein, it was confirmed on Monday.

Rassie Erasmus, the Director of Rugby at SA Rugby, believes that Brits can play a similar role in the current Springbok set-up such as experienced players Duane Vermeulen and Willie le Roux.

“We are busy with building experience, continuity and capacity towards the Rugby World Cup, so we want our young players rubbing shoulders with experienced players such as Duane, Vermeulen and Willie le Roux,” explained Erasmus.

“I want Schalk to perform a similar role, because he has extensive inside knowledge and plenty of experience from playing for Saracens in the English and European conditions. It’s a great way for our younger guys to learn the trade of international rugby from these guys.”

Brits, 37, retired from rugby last month after a nine-year stint at Saracens.

He has 10 Test caps to his name.

I don't understand the logic of bringing in a 37-year retired player into the squad- unless it is in a coaching capacity.  Surely he is unlikely to get game time, so why not just make him a coach.

I agree with SB - he was called in to advise the new hookers, not to play.   I think that Erasmus realize hat there is no future in Rallepele and the other two (Van der Merwe and Mbonambi) can do with some advice.

There  is no other real explanation.   However, Mozart will support Brits selection to the team all-out because he is just the right age as far as he is concerned.

I am convinced that the inclusion of Schalk Brits was done to reserve the position for Marx and Mbonambi. Brits will know that he has no hope to go to the 2019 RWC.

I am just curious to know what Rassie's opinion on the long term future of Akker vd Merwe is.

I just hope all 3 could go to the RWC ... and what about Adrian Strauss whom I think currently (and perhaps next year as well) plays the best rugby of his career?

Why not call up Naas Botha, he has some time off his current job at the moment.
