Rassie was coach of the WP and in view of the rubbish going on decided to resign after being offered the post of Director of Rugby by WP/Stormers, While he was in the latter position Coetzee was coach and the Stoprmers/WP did very well.
Afterwards he was appointed as Director of Rugby by SARU and the Stormers/WP started going downhill rapidly. Now as SA coach Coetzee was pathetic and SARU decided that they must strengthen the coaching team by bringing in -
* initially Venter and Smith; and
* now also Erasmus
it is clear that Venter and Smith was required to do a lot of damage repair after the Meyer years and this year they started of getting things in order - their main test was obviously on Friday and they came away with flying colours in respect opf some facets of play.
So what can Erasmus contribute after his return to SARU in January, Coaches are supposed to select the best players and then make sure they are properly coached. This has not happened thus far this year and Venter and Smith was given some really poopr players to turn into decent performers.
This is where Erasmus would come in. Hew knows the SARU policy on quotas and he will try and determine the best players to be selected instead of the often enough junk players selected thus far. The Super Rugby season next year will giovwe him a chance to do just that.
However, it is not only the quota selections where there have been serious problems - some others have been as poor or even worse. So lets look at the potential squad with Rassie as Director of Rugby"-
* Outside backs
Nkosi Mapimpi Coetzee, Combrinck and Le Roux
* Centers
Janse van Rensburg, Vorster, De Allende, Kriel
* Flyhalf
Pollard, Willemse, Bosch, Du Plessis
* Scrumhalf
Schreuder, Venter. Ivan Van Zyl and Cromje
In the backline Rassie will look both at physicality and speed - but the other aspects he will consider is ball skills and clear thinking players.
* Loosies
Kriel, Kolisi, WieseDu Preez twins, Whiteley, CoetzeeCoetzee and the others mentioned.
* Locks
Etzebetgh, Du Toit, De Jager, Schickerling
* Props
LH - Kitshoff, Beast, Du Toit, MaraisTH - Oosthuizen, Malherbe, Lopuw
* Hookers
Marx, franco marais, Marutlelle
The above are just names that came to the fore and I think that the Super Rugby season next year will give Erasmus a lot of ideas as to the way to go.

Rassie would have agreed to the transformation objectives- so he will not always choose the best team-(assuming that black players are not always the best in their respective positions ) So his hands will be tied to some extent.....
It is a pity as Rassie probably knows more than Coetzee, Brendan Venter and Franco Smith put together.

Rassie will identify worthwhile players and will see that they are selected - not substandard players like Leyds, Rhule, Paige, etc.
I have no problem with the quota system provided worthwhile players are being selected and properly coached.

So you have no problem if the best player is not chosen....as long as the substitute is “worthy”. Yep that sounds like your ANC training coming through. Most posters on here disagree and favour pure merit selections.

I get the idea that some "experts" do not know that there is a big difference between Director of Rugby and National Coach.

In SA the national coach functions under the control of the Director of Rugby - and if the past is anything to go by Rassie will have a major impact on team selection and development,

Um ... Mike ... I'm a little puzzled.
If you have no problem with the quota system ... why do you complain so much?
The team's riddled with your boys. They're like an incurable virus ... ever increasing their numbers ... destined to dominate the body till they kill it ... and you have no problem with it??
What's the matter with you?
Hate to burst your bubble, Comrade ... BUT ... ALL QUOTA PLAYERS ARE SUB STANDARD. You even have a quota as your coach.
Name one quota player that doesn't have a much better white player sitting out? Just one.
I thought you said that you no longer suck ANC dick? Didn't you say that? I'm starting to think that you're still very much an active member of theirs.
What a stupid man.

Maybe I put it wrongly and not clear enough, I have no problem with the selection of players irrespective of race - provided the best players are at all times selected, The ideal is not to select duds because of their race - but to identify players and develop them further,
The list of duds are long - but take for instance Rallepele - he is not even the starting hooker for the Sharks - problem is he is only their third place hooker after Marais and Akker. Why not Marutlelle?
Why Rhule and Skosan and leave out real performers like Nkosi and Mapimpi?
The list is long - the same can be said of Jantjies. We all know that he caves in under pressure,

Quotas are a reality but it doesn't help us much when we select the worst possible quota players available.

Quotas are a reality. SARU are getting forced.
SARU are under massive pressure as they almost went bankrupt last year.They made a massive loss- and were probably keen to fire Coetzee - even if it was just for their own job security.
The games vs OZ & All Blacks in SA had less multi-racial representation than many Bok teams over the last 10 years.
Maybe CleanCut should get a job at SAR U seeing as he thinks it is so easy.

You are really dim - the issue of quotas has been discussed for years and the issue was that both Meyer and Coetzee made the same mistakes - they never selected the best SA players available, That relates to both White players and quota players.
Meyer was as to White payers stuck on his antiquities and iro of quota selections totally incompetent - resulting in a dismal selection of quota picks, Coetzee is just plain incompetent in all facets of selection and play.
I said that players must be picked on merit and that the quota players must form part of the merit system and consequently identified and properly developed.
That is where I believe Erasmus will play a major role. He will know when players have the ability to perform and unlike the last two coaches will identify players worthy of selection irrespective of race.

12 Oct 2017, 21:21#24
What did the previous Rassie/AC combination deliver? Remember that Rassie was also the DoR then.
Another easy question. Did the stop the selection of midget quotas in the backline, for instance? Remember that Rassie was also the DoR then.

13 Oct 2017, 08:23#33
@Draad. .......which brings me back to the point. Ou Maaikie is forever spilling his guts about how kak Ludeke was and now how great Rassie is going to be. Now you are telling me that the kakkest coach, on charge of the team with the kakkest flyhalf ever to play the game, captained by the kakkest lock in the game still beat the wonderful Rassie directing Suutjiespoep. And, BTW, it was also an away game for the Bulls. The game was played in Soweto, remember.
@Ou Maaikie. So, Ludeke, Morne and Matfield lost the game for the Bulls. That is now the 2010 final? Really? Oh and BTW, could you point me to exactly when Matfield was fired as assistant coach? Are you ever going to let go of that blatant lie? And then you have the audacity of calling others liars. You are a farking joke, mate.

You are a dimwit - as it happened I was at the game in Durban and the Stormers were leading 5 minutes out - when Habana scored a highly individual try winning the game. Despite a desperate effort by Ludeke and his weakling lock Habana's abilities was not destroyed in the years he played for the Bulls,
The decline started subsequently when the whole Bulls system felt flat and they were getting weaker year by year. Mitchell is already showing what good coaching can do in developing a functional teram

Ag jirre tog. And then you have the nerve to call me a dimwit. Draad and I were talking about the 2010 RWC final that happened between the Stormers and the Bulls in Soweto in 2010. That was when Rassie was the DoR at the Stormers and Suutjiespoep Coetzee the head coach and Ludeke in charge of the Bulls lead by Matfield and with MS at flyhalf.
You, on the other hand, are still in 2007 when the Bulls played the Sharks in the final. A game that has f@kol to do with this argument. On top of it a game where HM, and not Ludeke, was the head coach. A game where Derick Hougaardt was the flyhalf and not MS.
And then you have the nerve to call me dim and did? Jy is so deurmekaar soos 'n klomp kots in 'n tuimeldroër jou doos.
