Rassie Optimizes Bok Squad for Scotland Clash

Rassie Erasmus is gearing up for a robust match as he unveils a revamped Springbok squad set to tackle a formidable Scottish team. With a blend of seasoned players and fresh talent, Erasmus is confident in the squad's depth and synergy to face the challenges posed by the Scots in the upcoming Nations Championship game at Loftus Versfeld this Saturday.

“We have good depth in our squad, and this will be a great test for the team,” Erasmus remarked following the announcement of his team selection. Retaining ten players from the squad that claimed a 45-21 victory over England, the lineup features stalwarts like Jesse Kriel, Damian Willemse, Paul de Villiers, Ruan Nortje, and captain Pieter-Steph du Toit.

"So it was important to select a team with some continuity from last week, while bringing in players we believe will be the right fit for what we are expecting from Scotland."

Scotland, coming off a strong Six Nations campaign and a recent victory against Argentina, is expected to be a tough competitor. "They had a good Six Nations campaign, and they come off a victory against Argentina away, so they will be psyched up going into this match," Erasmus noted.

The team sees Canan Moodie moving up from the bench, while Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Zach Porthen, Ben-Jason Dixon, and Grant Williams will serve as replacements. The backline has been reshuffled with Aphelele Fassi, Edwill van der Merwe, and Moodie forming the back three. Kriel and Willemse will pair up in midfield, with Handré Pollard and Embrose Papier managing the halfback roles.

In the front row, Boan Venter, Johan Grobbelaar, and Wilco Louw will take their positions, supported by Cobus Wiese and Nortje in the second row. The loose trio will consist of No 8 Evan Roos, Du Toit, and De Villiers.

"All of the players have been working extremely hard at training, and they are fully aware of the threat Scotland poses. Many of these combinations have played together for the Springboks and for their provincial teams this season," added Erasmus.

Erasmus also highlighted the advantage of playing at Loftus Versfeld, a familiar ground for many players. He emphasized the need for precision and taking opportunities to secure a win against the well-coached Scottish team. "Matches against them are always tough, and looking back, there have been some very close encounters between the sides in the past, so we need to be switched on from the first whistle, be accurate in all departments of the game, and use our opportunities if we want to get the desired result," concluded Erasmus.

Team List:

  • Starters: Jesse Kriel, Damian Willemse, Paul de Villiers, Ruan Nortje, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Aphelele Fassi, Edwill van der Merwe, Canan Moodie, Handré Pollard, Embrose Papier, Boan Venter, Johan Grobbelaar, Wilco Louw, Cobus Wiese, Evan Roos.

  • Bench: 16 Jan-Hendrik Wessels, 17 Ntuthuko Mchunu, 18 Zach Porthen, 19 Ben-Jason Dixon, 20 Vincent Tshituka, 21 Elrigh Louw, 22 Grant Williams, 23 Quan Horn.

We have some proper depth in some positions.
My only concern - albeit reserved - is that Rassie is becoming a bit "windgat" or overconfident with his selections.

Whilst I appreciate what he is continually building - I worry slightly that it hampers continuity and confidence.

Decent side, not so happy about Fassi but Quan is on the bench. If Scotland turns it on this could turn into a slippery banana. They're much better than England.

I'd really have liked to see JHW given a starting run. Flip he is explosive.
Zac also needs to start more. I am a massive fan of his. He is all skill + the power!

As for Jason Ben Dixon - not his fault - but i dont know why he is there? Is he a flank that plays lock or a lock that plays flank? Either or... he doesnt offer much.
