Let’s face it most don’t get how Rassie devised the Jap demise. The Japs have played a high tempo game with an all out attack involving backs and forwards intertwined in their execution. They play what’s in front of them and given the 200 plus days spent together there is clearly a great understanding and brotherhood amongst the team. Rassie knew that the Japs would want to set the tempo and in the first half he let the Japs believe they were but without putting points on the board thanks to a brutal defensive effort which was both physical and clever. We snuffed them out, Am in particular. Faf was under instruction to kick possession away so that the Japs would have the ball and launch attacks with the Boks stopping them every time. It was attritional and energy sapping. By the second half the Japs were done physically and mentally. It’s disheartening and energy sapping attacking for 40 minutes without reward. By the second half the poison had set in and the Japs were a spent force. The Boks turned up the physical attrition and the job was done. Hats off to Rassie, it’s brave saying here is the ball run at us, give us your best. It’s brave having the patience to let this plan run its course then change the plan to achieve the goal

It should be an easier job as the Welsh look less equipped to execute their brand right now. Unlike the Japs I’m guessing the Welsh are low on confidence - they have stuttered through the WC. I’m guessing Rassie will instruct the Boks to go back to the plan we adopted against the AB and Italians, without the two costly errors against the AB’s!!

yeah i think will be closer game but boks should win this.

We will know if they are on or not whether faf and pollard kick up and unders everytime they get the ball.

The counter from welsh much better than poor japanee...

I think physicality with rush defence and TRY to put it through the hands boks... if your centres KNOW how to pass......?!

Rassie's a good coach, probably a fine motivator but don't forget the defence guru ...... upon this rock we build our team.

On another topic I'll move Kolbe to FB sooner rather than later ...... he has that Christian Cullen like elusiveness, giving us an opportunity to replicate the ABs successful move re Barratt. Poor Am never receives a pass enabling him to feed his wings & we need attacking options.

It is more tiring to make tackles than to attack. Rassie knew if he packed his bench with 6 forwards, he had more depth on this bench to sub the tired players.
I would prefer to the return to the game plan used in the 4 nations where the backs got more possession with fewer box kicks.
Also, passing to Pollard more often to let him do some box kicks as well.
The Japanese were using lazy runners to obstruct the Bok chasers, but if there was more mix and match in the tactics, this would be harder to do.

Kolbe should have been tried at XV before the World cup. His counter-attacking ability maybe even more effective from XV,

He is more reliable under the high ball, and he has a better clearance kick than Leroux

If the Bok forwards dominates, playing Frans Steyn at XV is also an option. He can kick the ball for miles from the 22, allowing the Boks to play more of the game in the opponent half.

Shark it might be physically more tiring making loads of tackles but mentally it empowers you as you know they can’t breach you and conversely the attacking side become demoralised and mentally drained as they can’t find a way to score points That was Rassie’s plan

There is nothing particularly sophisticated about the Rassie blueprint. He is a C- coach, very far from the brimming cauldron of ideas we were foretold. The Boks simply physically overcame a better coached and more talented attacking team by killing them at thr source.

The Welsh have an oppressive line with ferocious work at the point of contact and subsequent breakdown. The Boks won't have the physical advantage they had against the previous strings of minnows they've faced. In fact, the Welsh have physically dominated the Boks for the past five years. Last November they comprehensively blunted Steph, Damian, Lood et al. If you can halt the Bok carriers, they really have no threat on attack. If you can win the aerial battle they struggle to build momentum. The Boks don't create space, they merely plough into you repeatedly with very basic and repetitive shapes and patterns. The biggest aspect of the Bok game post-game one is their power at the breakdown. This will be the decider for me. Can they continue that trend? The Welsh are very clean and precise in contact and provide clean and quick ball. It's remarkable how well they achieve this in the face of intense pressure.

It'll be a physical battle. Our games with Wales always are. The Welsh usually defend with their openside wing up in the line and 9 in the line, so kicking is an obvious option. Perhaps a shallow kick will finally serve its purpose in negating the rush and compressing the Welsh when they win those balls. If they don't, then the Boks can build a head of steam.

It won't be pretty, but if the Boks can achieve the stated aims and take their chances, they will win.

Not how the French combined physical hard running with creation of space. It was a recipe which heavily exposed the Boks last November, one which leads me to believe the Boks won't be able to replicate exactly what the French did last weekend.

Wow - the Village Idiot is back with another anti-Erasmus attack without knowing what he is talking about.  And his attack is what makes it so laughable.   He is as per normal saying things that he dreamed up on Cloud 9 and his fairy tales continue unabated.

Remember how he spoke about the wonderful game plan of Meyer that managed to lose all games in the 2015 Rugby Championship and whose ultimate achievement was a disgrace against Japan who he made into a really the team which could beat the Springboks in the quarterfinals and now that function will be taken over by the Welsh, whose struggled through the WC and if it was not through a red card would have lost against France,

They are now his great hope to prove that Erasmus is a useless coach and the team with players like De Allende, Du Toit and De Jager is the pits.   He is a double digit coward as well - he wrote paragraphs about the upcoming match denouncing Erasmus and the team and then add an escape clause if he is caught out again in case despite his diatribe the Springboks win the game.

This is what is called normal because of his attitude ad h is multiple user names of the past is that he changes names every time he is disgraced on site.  Happy Village Idiot Day to him.

That may indeed have been the plan, but I'm not sure why it's considered much different from what we have been doing the whole season (exception the Australia game in the RC with the Jantjies/Jantjies axis where we saw possibly the least kicking of the season between 9/10).

Against Italy for example we kicked 36 times, more than against Japan, although with a more even split between box kicks and bombs from Pollard.

Against NZ in round 1 Faf put up 12 or 13 box kicks, few of which we recovered or got a positive return from. Essentially the same strategy, hand over possession and trust our defense? I see now I have a thread on the board where I analyzed Faf's 10 box kicks against Australia in 2018. This is how the Boks play under Rassie. It's nothing new. He's built the Bok game around our defense.

I'd be surprised to see a much of a change in tactics against Wales from what we've been doing under Rassie since RC2018. Maybe Rassie sneaks one in one us though. We'll see.

What a crock of shit!!

The Japs dominated the Goats in the first half. Even their "superior" pack found themselves under the pump. They were defending for their lives.

Even their set piece was under pressure. They were supposed to walk over the Japanese. What happened? A big pack dominated by small men.

The Goats should have been down to 14 men after Beast's spear tackle. They ended the first half totally panic stricken and had to be calmed down by Rassie and his quota assistant.

Stupid Dave makes it sound as though this was all part of a game plan. The brilliance of Rassie.

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahaa!!

I don't think so.

The only thing that helped them was their rush defense. They were off side on many occasions and were allowed to get away with it most of the match. It disrupted the Japanese who had no answer for it and found themselves on the back foot.

Game plan my arse.

Try to wake up Stupid Dave.

What has Rassie brought to the mix?

Jake White introduced the rush defense more than a decade ago. It was abandoned by all the coaches that followed ... in fact, most of what White put in p lace was discarded. The Bok style of play was reinvented by Meyer and we've all seen the results of this stupidity.

Rassie has selected a better quality of quota ... but quotas none the less.

Faff kicks everything away. He doesn't have a good pass, not even off his right hand. His only redeeming quality is being a nuisance ... getting in the faces of the opposition.

Apart from being riddled with quotas, there is nothing new to this Goats team.

Let's face it ... our supposed stars (Pollard, Vermeulen) have been rather timid. Not the world beaters we were told to expect ...

Wales have been poor. The Goats have written them off ... and so have most of the members on this board. Careful ... we may just see another panic stricken Goats side come half time.

Gooooooooooo Walesssssssssss!!!

Not forgetting that Japan played pretty dumb rugby as well, persisting in high risk stuff in their own territory against a defense they couldn't break. T hat leaked the penalties that allowed the Boks to get daylight on the scoreboard before putting the knife in.

Dave i didn't like the strategy of giving away our ball. However one cant argue with the result or the fact Rassie is a very astute coach. Agree with your take

My fellow CA, and of course a highly intelligent man, Cobus Visagie, said Rassie was the sharpest rugby brain he had ever encountered. Many have made similar comments.

Poor wee cc the ab wannabe is hurting real bad. Only a Bok loss to Wales or one in the final will help his pain. But whatever happens by reaching the semi finals Rassie has already had a reasonably good RWC so its all over already for the Rassie bashers. Bet Rassie's win ratio also is looking much better so we have not heard anything about that recently. Hahahahahahahha

Organhuffer must be hugely embarrassed at how well Allende played. His comments about Allende being weak i s one of the great blunders made. Steph and Lood played very well and confounded the Huffer once again.

It's really funny that the Goats had to rely on penalties to get this "daylight".

They were supposed to freight train this 2nd tier rugby nation ...  isn't that what you guys suggested ... ??? ... and yet ended up turning to their coach for a little comfort at 5 - 3.

Haaaaaaaaaaaahahahahaha!!

Beast wasn't red carded for some strange reason. That boggles the mind. I wonder what would have happened if it were a white player?

Yes ... it was stupid play from Japan that won the match for the goats. The quota goats can be thankful for a lot of things ... much like Wales can be thankful to the stupid French lock.

We have the final of the WC being played in one of the semis ... and the other semi contested by two second rate sides that have no right being there.

What an anticlimax.

Let me explain something which all the Erasmus critics always ignored from the word go.  Tat relates to the number of tries scored  by the Springboks this year:-

In the RC - shortened version :    Tries scored 12 (in 2015 it was 7)

In the WC                               :     Tries scored 30 (in 2015 it was 23)

Tries flows from attacking moves and from nothing else.  Kicking was always a part of the game and I was disappointed with what happened on Sunday as well - instead of being effective it was poorly executed.

I am not at all disappointed by the results attained by Erasmus thus far.  He did a lot to repair the damage caused by Meyer and Coetzee and it is clear that the Springboks  are on the way up. .

Pakie

Those penalty kicks at goal was total garbage.   With Du Toit, De Jager and Etzebeth they walked meters in driving mauls - one even near to 40 meters,   They should under those circumstances rather made corner kicks and set up driving mauls.

The issue about driving mauls was discounted last year because of in the main the physical deficiency of Mostert - but with him not around there was no reason not to go for driving mauls.   The one driving maul after Mostert replaced De Jager was as to be expected an unholy mess with the Springboks losing possession.

Tell me something, Stupid Dave.
If that 1st half went to plan ... why was it necessary for Rassie to comfort his panic stricken charges at the break ... or was that also part of the game plan?
Huh??

Usually one would ascribes that kind of behavior to a child who has just woken from a nightmare ... followed by a reassuring hug and words of "there, there ... deep breath ... it's all going to be alright ... there are no such things as boogey men"

The loss to Japan 4 years ago is clearly still a fresh wound. Shame. Poor Goats. These mean Japs still causing them nightmares.
Your posts on here contain in general a lot of thumbsucking ...  we all know that ...  we've seen it many times over the years ... conjured nonsense ... in short, just plain horseshit ... but expecting us to swallow it gets a bit a much at times.

You may like to live your life in a constant state of delusion ... but most of us prefer looking it square in the eye ... living in reality.

You should try it some time ... if you can tear yourself away from that drunken stupor.

I dunno. Maybe since Rassie decided to make it look like we are a bunch of clueless clowns who cannot tackle, kick or catch a ball just to fool the Japs. If we had to do that to make sure that we make it to the next round, I’m not too convinced that we are on track. If he was so convinced, then why not go out and play proper rugby and wipe the Japs off the field from the start? This idea of a game plan based on tiring out of the Japanese, in order to annihilate them at the end, sounds a lot like a shyte excuse to hide away from our inherent flaws. What if the Japanese didn’t get tired huh? Are you really convinced that Rassie was that clever, to know for a fact that they would tire? Look, I’m very happy that we made it into the semis and I would have been more than a little pissed off if we didn’t, but this horse shyte game plan idea is just a tad far fetched, IMO.

The plan was obviously to absorb pressure with defence and to pounce on quick turnover ball...and then overpower them in the last 20 with a fresh pack of forwards....and it worked too. The poor kicking, comical fumbles and handing over cheap possession wasn't part of the plan...that was just an added bonus.
