We've been so wrapped up in the arguments about various stuff, that we have ignored what is probably the most important development in South African rugby this year. Rassie Erasmus. Now that the dust has settled after the first real test, what are your thoughts on Rassie?
My two cents, there is definitely a change in Bok rugby. The Boks were rough around the edges, but that is to be expected given the minimal game time they have had together. For me the most notable things about Saturday's game, were
1) The fact that there was a clear game plan. After Coetzee's abysmal tenure, that is refreshing to see.
2) The Boks had the belief to rally from a massive deficit to come back and win the game. That tells me there is confidence in the game plan, and solid leadership in the team. Again, something lacking over the last few years. A buy into the coaches strategy from the players, is huge in any sport.
3) Honesty. Rassie took on the chin the mistakes that he made. He didn't try to blame everyone but himself.
Its early days, and he has a lot of challenges which we have covered in detail, but he seems to be getting his selections right, given the options and limitations he is operating under. He seems to be able to get the best out of his players. And so far, he's been tactically astute, and quite clearly has the faith of his team.
