PLAYER RATINGS: MUCH BETTER

15 Andries Coetzee:
An outstanding performance by the newcomer. His kicking was excellent and his decision-making on the counter attack. He also gave the Boks front-foot ball.
9/10

14 Raymond Rhule:
Not much time and space with the ball, but he showed excellent defensive skills. He committed a few handling errors, yet he had an excellent game.
5/10

13 Jesse Kriel:
Decision-making at times let him down, but an overall good came. Carried well and he was solid in defence.
7/10

12 Jan Serfontein:
Had a quiet first half but became more involved as the game carried on. Scored a try in the 67th minute.
6/10

11 Courtnall Skosan:
First real touch late in the game, not much opportunity on the ball but looked for work.
5/10

10 Elton Jantjies:
Excellent performance from the Springbok No.10. He took charge of the game, his positioning was good and his overall decision-making excellent.
9/10

9 Ross Cronje:
Great performance by the veteran Lions scrumhalf, showing why he is the best man for the job. Cool, calm and collective.
9/10

8 Warren Whiteley:
Solid performance from the skipper, registering his first test win as the South African captain. Packed down on the flank at scrum time though, which was weird.
6/10

7 Teboho Mohoje:
Good early start, carrying the ball with intent and he was defensively solid.
7/10

6 Siyamthanda Kolisi:
Good carries early on. However, he missed a try-scoring opportunity when he passed too early. Got a turnover, but no real work on the ground.
7/10

5 Francois Mostert:
He had an excellent performance. He worked hard off the ball, leading the defensive charges. Not many carries, but good line-out work.
8/10

4 Eben Etzebeth:
Excellent defensive performance, even though he did not carry the ball as much as you would have liked.
8/10

3 Frans Malherbe:
Did not offer much on attack, made a few tackles but the scrums swayed both ways.
4/10

2 Malcolm Marx:
Explosive carries early in the game and impressed with his defensive work.
8/10

1 Tendai Mtawarira:
Struggled with in scrums time and again. Had a few carries, but did not gain much ground.
4/10

Replacements:

16 Bongi Mbonambi (On for Marx, 64th min):
Not enough time to be rated.

17 Steven Kitshoff (On for Mtawarira, 53rd min):
Showed good defensive work.
5/10

18 Coenraad Oosthuizen (On for Malherbe, 63rd min):
He showed intent on defence.
5/10

19 Pieter-Steph Du Toit (On for Mostert, 60th min):
Simply picked up where Mostert left off.
5/10

20 Jean-Luc du Preez (On for Mohoje, 59th min):
Showed good defensive skill.
5/10

21 Francois Hougaard (On for Cronje, 64th min):
Not enough time to be rated.

22 Francois Steyn (On for Kriel, 63rd min):
Added to the already winning performance.
5/10

23 Dillyn Leyds (On for Rhule, 73rd min):
Not enough time to be rated.

These are pathetic ratings...Kriel was solid in defence? Seriously? He was run over by Chavancy to provide the key break through that led to the French try. Malherbe an 8, Beast a 4? When the Beast's opponent, the massive Atonio leaked 3 scrumming penalties? ... This is the kind of rugby journalism that unfortunately passes for expert opinion.

Malherbe and Beast were both poor. When last did Beast have a good Bok game? He doesn't even try get over the advantage line anymore. He just collapses on the ground the moment an opposition player gets anywhere near him. Malherbe must just piss off! Also, has he ever done a bicep curl in his life? The guy has the weediest little arms I have ever seen on a prop. PSDT is also starting to look like a hype player to me. I think Moz and CC have been right about him. If he has not put in a huge performance by the end of this series, then I think he must go too. Whitely showed what a difference a good captain makes. Really like this guy. And Marx....the new Bizmark!!

Steyn was lucky to get 5 out of 10.   He got ru n over by too many players and the idiot kicked away aimlessly a turnover ball.   Deserve nothing more than 3.

Steyn had a good game, not anywhere as bad as what you make him out to be. For a player who doesn't pass he made a few good offloads and the chip kick led to a try.

Steyn was not bad, I saw two decent offloads...which is already a huge improvement from him.

Read Steyn's  stats on defense and his defense was BS.   His kicking away a turnver ball was the pits.   After his team struggled and won a turnover ball - he kicked it away handing possession back to the French - non-thinking twit is our Fat Fransie.

Bloo you don't think the Beast did the business when his opponent, who is as big as a cupboard leaked 3 scrumming penalties?

He was good enough in the scrums Moz, but it is his general play that is utterly forgettable. Also, his opposite number may weigh as much as a small car, but that does not make him a good prop. Think about how many times the crowd chanted Beast on Saturday. You can't can you? T hat is because he was already on the ground before they could draw breath. In the past he was almost like another loosie. Pilfering ball, huge tackles big runs. It is like he has realised that as long as he turns up and scrums adequately, his place is assured. Why do more?
