The Melbourne Rebels have not offered Wallabies flyhalf James O'Connor a Super Rugby contract for 2014.

 

The Rebels made the announcement just hours after Australia's 41-16 loss to the Lions in Sydney.

 

'After three years in Super Rugby, the club is entering the next phase of development,'

Rebels chief executive Rob Clarke said in a statement. 'I am very confident of our player recruitment strategies which continue

to identify some excellent emerging talent. This group will provide the platform for continual improvement, both on and off the field.'

 

O'Connor has struggled with injuries during his two-season stint in Melbourne, and has repeatedly found himself in trouble off the

field, most recently when he was out with Kurtley Beale at 4am, just days before the second Test against the Lions.

 The Rebels were desperate to sign both Oconner and Beale, but it has not worked out.

Oconner is one of the best fullbacks or wings in the world,

and is solid in most other backine positions as well.

 

He must have really been messing around for them not offer him a new contract.

Maybe he will go to the Brumbies, better to with a winning team than the Rubbels

Shakbok This beats me hollow - because I thought every Australian franchise would pay top dollars to sign him up. However, I have a feeling that O'Connor personally spelt trouble with any franchise he plays for. He has been hanging around with Beale and some Leagure foorballers from Sydney - so I think he would eye the Brumbies and Waratahs to get signed up. I do not think White would look for trouble by signing him up unless he is absolutely sure he can handle O'Connor and keep him on the straight and the narrow. If that happens the Waratahs is the only team that would have him - that is if they do not find out about those issues that made the Rebels deciding not to re-sign him. The inside news must surely be known to all franchises and if personal problems are so bad that the Rebels would not want him - then he may find other franchises would not want him either and may not war to sign him up However, Sasue will probably now the inside story and lets wait and see what he says about the issue.

Being out at 4am in the morning is what just about any person his age would be doing. 

With little to no offseason, these guys are just doing what everyone else does.

Except for Beale of course who is regulary in fights.

Sharkbok I sometimes read newspaper reports and in at least one case I got the feeling that O'Connr is not the easiest baby in the World. There may be another angle too - and that is that O'Connor may want more money an the Rebels franchise would not oblige and he would leave anyway.

I think its clear that his attitude has gotten even larger than his ability... I think Rebels have tied up too much cash in him and ROI isn't worth it - and hes showing that not necessarily a 'team' player. It will be very interesting where he goes as he burnt bridges well and truly in the West... Tahs, Brumbies and Reds roster/s all pretty full too. It just shows how quickly things can change..... His performance in the BIL tests too show that 15 or wing really is his position.... Maybe room for him somewhere but I know hes got history with Red's new coach (ex force coach) - maybe France for a stint there.....??????

The boy needs a decent hiding.  Like my dad when he played they had to crawl the gauntlet for this type of nonsense.  Good player with a flawed character and the wrong "friends"

sharbok, u have very misleading titles for u threads, lolz, big difference between getting the boot and not being offered a new contract.
but ur right about he must have been up to other stuff for the rebels to not be interested, i mean beale punched the captain, and hit the piss days after signing a contract that he wouldnt be drinking again, so its hard to believe that staying out at 4am before a the 2nd test was the catalyst.

apparently the force would be more then happy to have james oconner in their roster for 2014, and why wouldnt they???
theres no team that wouldnt benefit from biebers inclusion, even the reds and brumbies, but those two teams are probably the only two teams that dont need him with the squad they currently have.

IMO waratahs will get his services for 2014, rebels were recruting foley very hard and barnes is gone next year, that means vola vola is the only decent flyhalf theyve got, but hes far from the finished product he could be.

i wouldnt mind it if bieber was to come to the hurricanes, we need a decent 12 and i dont believe for one second that bieber will find a new home.
