A red card is a stupid way to decide a final. We would have liked to beat the Lions with their full squad on the field -->that way, they have no excuses. That is how real men play rugby.

I would dare suggest, in the future to do away with red cards. Instead keep the player on the field and have the victim do to them what was done to the victim.

In the case of SBW against the British Lions, you would have the English/Lions wing shoulder him in the face and then play carries on. In that way, we the paying public are not deprived of a proper spectacle.

Hey Hakwa ,how goes it brother ?  Yes red cards in finals games make for a crappy finish at times ,but some like that cc whacker thiink they are just mahvelous ,so long as its for our boys that is .Having said that there was no way under the current rules that he could have given just a yellow ,SBW was a bit more debatable but it is what it is although that whole fiasco over what constitutes a game for suspensions was stupid .I think what constitutes a high shot has been overdone mainly to give the NH the advantage it would seem .

Geez but Maccaw would have had to punch a few ugly mugs under your system bro ! Dont think he would come at belting someone pinned to the ground like our old mat QC or that Greyling idiot ,that Wel sh mongrel that kinghit him a few years back could do with a smack in the head though [ the arsewipe didnt so much as get penalised for that one and it ended up in a Welsh try !]

It wasn't the red card that decided the final. It wasn't the laws of the game that decided the final. It wasn't the referee who dished out the red card that decided the final. It was the player who made the stupid mistake that decided the final.

Cerudunce red cards are the problem. It ruined the whole occasson as it ahs ruined a number of games. Away with red cards. Give the guy 15 minutes off and this signals a post match investigation and a ban for some period. I couldnt be bothered to watch the tape i have of the game.

@Beeno, had it been a Crusaders player that got red carded, you would have been wailing about it like a pig being slaughtered.

What a shame to have a Red card issued in a game.Surely a yellow would have been more than justified under the circumstances. Not siding with Smith but when chasing an "Up and Under" ball it is virtually impossible to stop the charge at the last stage.
Yes, a player in the air must be protected at all costs but a Red card was a game decider.

Yes, I don't know anyone who is happy that a red card had to be issued in a final but the ref applied the law correctly. Thank goodness that is not disputed. The offending player knew the law & the penalty for breaking it. Sure we can talk of other options for breaking such laws for the future but I am glad this incident is not the subject of sour grapes & gripping... except for my mate Beeno, lol

 JW correct.
I was very impressed with the Crusaders attacking from the start and their defense was outstanding.
Not disputing the victory and the laws have to be applied as the refs see fit but the IRB definitely have to revisit some of the laws and how they are applied.
But nobody can argue that the Crusaders are worthy Super 18 champs.
What a winning first season for the coach as well.
Congrats  guys.

What could have been an epic rugby match, given how strong the Lions were in the last 20.....was taken away from us by a clumsy act. But it wasn't deliberate, in fact it was made worse by the fact that Smith froze trying to minimize contact. If he simply jumped for the ball, the Sader wouldn't have flipped. .. There has to be a better way....the Lions series and Super rugby were left unsatisfyingly unresolved because of red cards. The red card punishes the fans.

"What could have been an epic rugby match, given how strong the Lions were in the last 20"

naaah, the lions were that strong in the last 20 because Peyper was trying to compensate the red card someway, trying to give some emotion to the game and to avoid the home team an embarrassing defeat in their own field.
He blew the saders away through penalties and let the lions do every possible infringment,... forward passes, dangerous off their feet ruck enterings, not releasing balls after tackles, etc

In Rugby League the SBW tackle wouldnt raise an eyebrow ,but knocking the legs out from under someone in the air certainly would .I reckon the Saders took the foot off the pedal after Reads try ,if it were a yellow they still would have scored that try in any case and would have kept hammering away to increase their lead within the 10 minutes.

Actualy if you look at the incident Smith literally stopped and the catcher ran through him....but nobody would contest it was a card, and under current rules a red card....and yes the Saders would probably have won. But it wasn't the contest it could and should have been,

Klop ..... perhaps the jumper should only be allowed to jump vertically, straight up & down, none of this forward leaping . Kwagga stopped & Havili did the rest . Of hoe ?

I think everyone knows the Lions would have won the game had they had 15 men (Just ask Cloudy!) . So the Crusaders also know they are fake champions.

You have to be a VERY biased rugby Noob to believe that the playing with 14 men is not worth 9 points ( old crust won 25-17 - a mere 8 point lead). You can have your 8 point but play 42 minutes with 14 men - a deal I would take every time. A player lile Kwagga is vital in the closing stages of the game as he can rip defences apart. We also know the Lions play hard for 80 minutes and run sides off their feet in the closing 20 minutes.
No the only rational conclusion is that the Lions would have won the match barring the unfortunate red card. Some feeble minded oaks think its obligatory to tell the winning side were deserved winners. Bwahahahahahahahhahaha
Beeno keeping his head while others are losing their rational faculties.

A red card punishes the fans. I agree with Mozart.
That was exactly how we felt when SBW recieved his during the British Lions Series. Hanson said afterwards that the coaching Team learnt nothing from the Test (to take to the 3rd Test) since alot of players played out of position.

nah, the lions were never going to win this final,... unless a massive help from the ref,...... the saders have a far superior team and especially a more physical and technically better forward pack

Lions tried to take the scrums out of the contest collapsing each and every of them,.... Dreyer was particularly active in this sense,... he alone collapsed very clearly 5 scrums and very probably another 2 or 3,..... he's one of the worst scrummagers I've seen and had in front the best front row,.... the few times he let the scrum going, he was blown away,... so he kept on collapsing,... he should have been more penalized and deserved a yellow but Peyper let him get away with it

And in the last 20 minutes Peyper tried to compensate the red and give some emotion to the game wrongly penalizing the saders and letting the lions infringe whatever they wanted

But this is quite a useless discussion,... games have to be played according to the rules,.... and according to the rules there was no other option but to show the red card,... Smith was reckless and it was very very dangerous,... Havili landed on his neck from a considerable height and this kind of falls can put and end to a career or even worst end up with someone in a wheelchair,.... besides it's been something the World Rugby announced since the beginning of the season, that refs have been applying through the whole season and the most talked, commented and criticized fact of the rugby campaign

I will give the Crusaders their due, they earned it, and got the trophy.

Well played indeed, just a pity about that red card, but we will never know what could have happened, had that incident never happened.

But this statement here below is total bollocks, and smacks of arrogance.

What a crock.....

The Lions were well in this game despite being a man down for half the game.  Your attitude of just automatically showing up and getting the win is ludicrous.

Same as this statement here

Smith was reckless and it was very very dangerous,...

Yes, he should have, could have, contested the ball, which would have probably null and voided the entire incident.

He didn't.... he almost froze and put his hands up, stupid yeah, but reckless or deliberate?

He did not manually tip - play or handle Havili in the air

He did not run through Havili, causing him to tip or spin the player over in the air, he stopped almost dead in his tracks.

If anything, Havili's forward inertia is what propelled him to flip over by the mistake that Smith made in not contesting the ball.

It never once looked malicious or had any bad intent behind it, to cause any injury.

It could have, very seriously injured Havili, and due to that, Smith gets a red, as per the rules.

I still say, well done Crusaders, it was a bloody hard game.

Let's at least give a fair assessment on the player who "changed" the game by getting a red, and the Lion's chances of getting that trophy.

"But this statement here below is total bollocks, and smacks of arrogance."

that statement was an answer to Mr. Bean's arrogant "the only rational conclusion is that the Lions would have won the match barring the unfortunate red card" and others ,... so, yeah, I answered an arrogance with another one,... just to compensate

"he almost froze and put his hands up, stupid yeah, but reckless or deliberate?"

I never said it was deliberate, it probably wasn't (no one can truly knows what he was thinking) but the intention counts for nothing in this case,... and it was completely reckless

Tell me Plum, why are you picking on ABasque's comments as being "arrogant" yet you have nothing to say about statements like this: "I think everyone knows the Lions would have won the game had they had 15 men (Just ask Cloudy!). So the Crusaders also know they are fake champions."

Sounding a bit selective there to me . . . especially if you consider what ABasque is reponding to.

naaah, the only arrogant thing I said ("the lions were never going to win this final") was an answer to other arrogant statements by Mr. Been,... as I said, just to compensate (by the way, I never see you going after Mr. Been for his arrogance)

if you cannot tolerate that a non-saffa criticizes your teams (lions and boks) it's your problem,.... if you are completely unable to answer these critics in rugby terms, it's your problem,.... if your only resource or way to answer them is calling people arrogant, is your problem,...

still waiting for you to point out what was arrogant from my part in the other day's thread,... you can add what is arrogant in this one,... but you won't
