Reds hang on for victory over Hurricanes

Quade Cooper of the Reds is tackled by Dane Coles of the Hurricanes

The Reds ended a four match losing streak to the Hurricanes when they held on for an 18-12 victory at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

The Reds had not beaten the Hurricanes since February 2007 when they won 25-16 in the Super 14.

The Reds scored the only tries of the match but were hanging on at the end of the match as Hurricanes had a try ruled out by the TMO.

Altthough they had more than enough opportunities to steal the result the Hurricanes had to settle for four Beauden Barrett penalties as they failed to snatch the victory in front of the 30,995 strong crowd.

The Reds led 18-9 early in the second half but survived several close shaves as the Hurricanes dominated possession and territory to have the home side under pressure in the final stages.

The Reds held on for a two tries to nil victory for their second win in this year's Super Rugby series after losing to the Brumbies in the opening round.

Wallabies Digby Ioane and lock Rob Simmons scored the Reds' tries, with Quade Cooper landing a conversion and two penalties.

The big moment in the match came four minutes from time when the Hurricanes thought they had scored the winning try through skipper Conrad Smith after Cooper's pass went astray over his try-line.

But the video referee found a knock on from replacement Chris Smylie in the leadup and the try was disallowed to the Hurricanes' astonishment.

The Reds scored the only tries of the contest with Ioane diving over in the corner in the 23rd minute and Simmons scoring his first Super Rugby try in his 51st game nine minutes into the second half .

The Reds are away to the Rebels in Melbourne next week, while the Hurricanes are at home to the Crusaders.

Reds captain James Slipper said they were "lucky" to win and praised his side's defence.

"We were playing in our own half and against a quality side like the Hurricanes you can't do that," Slipper said.

"It's a credit to the squad as to how hard we worked for each other and the defence we put up was phenomenal.

"Through good defence we were lucky to come away with a good win."

Final Score Reds 18 (11) Hurricanes 12 (9)

by far the most irritating match i have ever watched. i was filled with frustration and a cocktail of emotions made up of sadness and rage as i watched mistake after mistake from the hurricanes.

there was no urgency, no team work, no creativity in the attack, it was like watching a season of stormers rugby only we didnt even have denfece.

perenara and barret kicked away the possesion soooooo many times i had to restrain myself from throwing a beer bottle at the TV, while my brother who is a highlanders supporter would fail miserably at holding back his laughter.

in hammets thrid year his team has known not one ounce of improvement and i hated his appointment to my canes from the start, but now i well and trully despise this fuckhead and the one silver lining about a poor hurricanes season is that hammet will be one step closer to getting the axe.
why in the world is fafili levave playing off the bench??? he was the hurrcianes most dominant loose forwad last year by a country mile and now he cant even start???
congrats hammet, u are trully one major fuckass.

the hurricanes really miss corey jane, an experienced star whose composure could have helped conrad settle the team, cos the hurricanes fuck ups were too much for even conrad to contain.

our tight 5 was weak, eaton needs to ask why he was so intent on breaking the most handaling errors by one player in match record, cos at the mpoment he will be the lead contender for worst player on the field award, not an easy feat considering the other 14 hurricane players.

on the bright side, we get to play the crusaders next week, so at least i will be expecting a loss.
i love how my hurricanes can find new and inventive ways to punish me for supporting them my whole life, :o/

Tough on ya saSUE but it could have been worse. Genia, who sparks the Reds backline was not present and also the Reds are not fit yet. When the Reds had some gas they were looking the better side.

You may beat the crusties as they too look vunerable. Like the abs they look at sixes and sevens. Like the Huricanes and abs the crusties tight five look weak?

sasu...sounds like the Hurricanes were unlucky to lose playing away against arguably the top arstralian team. Early days yet though mate - even the Stormers are struggling to get any points on the board - what's happening Bean Brain ?

At least the Hurricanes are showing plenty of potential...

Sharkbok ...mate the Sharkies will never ever beat the Hurricanes this year in pool play. If you study the draw then you'll understand...
