To start us off, here's an article from the Independent proposing bringing the black cards (a la GAA) to rugby.

The article isn't great (it assumes you're familiar with GAA, since it's an Irish paper), but here's how I think it would work:

Yellow card - 10min sinbin. (as is)
Black Card - 10min Sinbin then subbed (replacement comes onto the field).
Red Card - Off. (as is)

So the Black Card would act like a Red Card from the player's perspective, but a Yellow from the team's perspective.

Opinions please...personally I don't think it's necessary and would slower and complicate the game further and I'm all for less rules and complications...hey Beeno and Dr Win

This sounds like a very kak idea that will create even more complications and arguements.

I think it sounds like a good idea.  Sometimes the player is unlucky to get a red- and this ruins the game. In this case, it will punish the player more than the team and fans.

Just like the uncontested scrum was abolished with a new rule to have a 2nd front row on the bench, so can and should the principle of 15 men against each other during the entire game be adopt. So, if a red or black card is introduced to remove an unwanted player, he must be replace by another player immediately. Penalise the player, not the team.

Additionally, players with the highest amount of black cards could be fined.

Are these cards specifically designed for the All Blacks? The cynical card.....

So will both black and red cards be used?

If it's gonna be just yellow and black then a coach might start a couple of players with the aim of them injuring a high value opponent and then being subbed.

There are only really two red card offenses that we see the majority of the time. Shoulder charges and playing players in the air.

Shoulder charges and armless tackles should certainly be red cards. The only example I can remember of where a shoulder charge was harshly punished was the SBW one in the Lions series. The Lions player seemed to unexpectedly step toward SBW's half of a double tackle and SBW dropped his shoulder half in self defense and half in brain fart. For the most part shoulder charges are clearly intentional.

The most dangerous thing that we see is players being taken out in the air. And strangely it doesn't look nearly intentional most of the time. Regardless it is dangerous as hell. There is no way that causing someone to land on their neck should not be a red card. And the team guilty of that infringement should be penalized severely. As long as players are allowed to jump to catch balls we will never see the end to such instances.

For me there are two options. Either penalize any player who jumps to take a kick. Or make so that only either defender or attacker is allowed to jump and any contact made with him before he lands, even if he lands safely should be penalized.

Everyone makes such a big deal about high balls and contests in the air being such a huge part of the game. I just don't see it.

In fact, if neither player was allowed to jump we'd see a lot more interesting situations arising. 15s would probably need to be taller and there'd be new techniques necessary for taking the ball above ones head without jumping.

The vast majority of games I've seen ruined have been because of those two fouls. There is no need to change the entire carding system. Just sort out the main culprits and we'll be most of the way to finishing games with 15 in each side.

Interestingly I can't remember the last time I saw a red card for anything else.

Seen in this context...fair enough Blikkies but what with the severity level eased somewhat as a team (shouldnt the player be held accountable to the team?)...maybe the guilty player should in addition of being sent off,(and yes let a substitute come on),  be wacked with a huge fine administered after a hearing....the other point against this change is that it doesnt happen that often and extra ruling can lead to mo re controversies in a game that's already bedevilled with them.

Let's see what the impact of the new rugby laws will be, they are simplifying them.

If a player gets a red card the game is ruined for millions of spectators. Get rid of the red card. Give the black card and deal with the team and the player after the game....fines and suspensions can be made harsh enough to prevent deliberate foul play. This has been my position ever since Jannes Labuschagne was harshly red carded against England some 15 years ago.

Yep this on second thoughts makes more sense ...no red card but only black and yellow or yellow and red but red meaning the same as black suggested here...no need to print black cards...
