Richie McCaw: If my form fades, I walk away

MARC HINTONGetty ImagesPREPARED TO WALK: All Blacks captain Richie McCaw has admitted he’ll retire from rugby before the next World Cup if his passion starts to wane.

Richie McCaw believes he can sustain his form and desire through to a fourth World Cup, but in a brutally frank admission, the All Blacks captain says he'll walk away from the team's shot at history if he feels either start to wane.

Based on his actual performances in four RC tests he played in last year and the corresponding tests this year the statistical record was as follows:-

                                  2012             2013

Call Carries                    39                  32

Meters gained                117                 43

Tackles made                 49                  49

Tackles missed                 1                  10

Line breaks                      2                   0

Defenders beaten             8                   0

If the above figures do not indicate that there was in fact a downward slide/fading in performances between 2012 and 2013  - I do not know what will indicate such.   McCaw is fading - and fading faster than you people wants to admit.   If he is honest about it - he should admit that he had a worse performance record this year than he had last year - but he has not said anything like that.

If he continues showing that type of downward slide in performance data this coming year - will he admit that he is going down?   I don't think so - and nobody in NZ will be prepared to tell him otherwise.

I reckon he will make another world cup. He was less noticeable on the field this year but still very effective.

As an SA supporter I hope he does - if the present trend continues - he would be of great help to opposing teams by 2015.

Thanks - I know though that he will become a liability - rather than an asset.   Will stick the stats where you suggest - but you will suffer because of it - not me.

Refusal to recognise reality - normally leads to the fall - proven throughout world history.   Napoleon, Hitler,  Communism in Eatern Europe - you name it - they refused to recognise facts and their rule collapsed.

So will that of your McCaw the Great.   He was GREAT for many years and recognised by me as such even before the NZ supporters cottoned on - but he has gone from a great player to a good player and is rapidly on the way to become an average player.

@mikey,

a few things ur stats left out,,,,
McCaw played all 6 RC/4nats in 2012, and he only played 4 tests in in the 2013 RC/nats after that injury.

when objectively taking that into consideration, it shows that McCaws attack has waned a little, but his defensive efforts have gone up 10 fold, but by McCaws own admission, still plenty of room for improvement.

also worth considering is that McCaw was thrown straight back into the deep end of test rugby after a lengthy sabbatical which saw him play F all games, he faced the world No3 ranked team the wallabies and i remember listening to comments from john eales, greg clarke and george gregan all state in amazement at how McCaw can return to test rugby ad put on that performance.

all this IMO needs to be considered in ur analysis, especially the fact that McCaw played 2 tests less in 2013 compared to 2012.

but heres some stats that espn dont show u and only some kiwis and die hard McCaw fans will know.

in McCaws RC/4nats that he played in 2013,,,,
the first 3 players (from either team) to breakdowns

vs wallys sydney

McCaw 25
messam 16
woodcock 15

vs wallys wellington
McCaw 26
whitelock 19
luatua 17

vs Boks joburg
McCaw 34
whitelock 23
woodcock 15

in every test that McCaw has played in 2013 he has been the most active when it comes to breakdowns, not just with getting involved but making sure he was one of the first 3 players to get there, as he understands that getting involved early allows u to do set the platform on attack, or pilfer and slow the ball on defence.

IMO McCaws is just fine, but while im biased and pro McCaw, it would be fair to say that ur biased and anti current McCaw.
however the stats only paint a downward picture if u choose to ignore key information like numbers of test played and work in other areas,

Sasue

Sorry if I upset you - but I think I am realistic about the issue.   McCaw always was a ball sense player - he would know the best and quickest way to get to breakdown points - that will always be a feature in his play.   However,  it is what he does when getting to breakdown points which is important.   In the past McCaw got turnovers - frustrate/slow down the opposition ball etc - he is not as effective in doing that as he used to be in the past.

Look I still rate McCaw higher than any SA loosie - but the signs are there that he is on a downward trend and that it may be better to use him less.   I am a great admirer of Cane  and he is hauling in McCaw rapidly.   I personally think that the AB's should use McCaw for not more than 60 minute per game and even replace him at half time in matches - and see what happens next year.

It was just a bit of needling on my part and Brycy fell hook, line and sinker for that one.

Its very touching to see the kiwi bird brains supporting their idol of course.Hoever the simple truth is as follows:Wee mcaaaw is being caught out be the refs more and more these days. Add this to his decline in performance and the fact he was never much good anyhow and one can only hope he continues playing for the wee abs as long as possible.Ditto woodcok mealamu, nonu  conrad,  ben smith etc. Hore did the right thing in retiring.Brycy sounds like those daft matfield groupies!!!
saSUE take note of tackles missed and meters gained. In particular explain to me how his missed tackled count would improve by playing more tests BwahahhahahahahaI suppose the problem was the big Bok looose forwards ran over him! HahahahahaMike penalties conceded would be of interest and ball steals as well.
Anyhow I had better stop else I will have that gun totting lady Cloudy after me again along with her 8 brothers.

Bean Brain hard to convince anyone as cognitively challenged as yrselves (not to mention nuttier than squirrel shit)... that this year's perfect season by the Mighty ABs is obviously better than the 2012 season when we lost a game... therefore an improvement ...Yipeekayay MFs...

Mike you know damn well those stats mean nothing unless you divide it by the number of minutes on-field , sounds a wee bit like your hoping that the ABS have some sort of downward trend to grasp at .thats a beanhead thing isnt it ? seeing disaster in a perfect season ? very dishonest of the heathen beandip as he knows if the Boks had a season like that he sure as hell wouldnt find fault ! [ not that such a thing is likely any time soon ! ]

@mikey,

im not upset at all brother mike, u need only look at the trophys in NZ rugby cabinet, the IRB No1 ranking and an unprecedented 100% season to know that rugby loving kiwis can never trully be upset over anything, especially with 2014 looking to go the same way as 2013.

but just pointing out the flaws in comparing the stats from 2013 RC 4nats to the 2012 RC/4nats and then saying McCaws performance is on the decline, when u fail to take into account that McCaw played 2 whole tests more in 2012.

" However,  it is what he does when getting to breakdown points which is important.   In the past McCaw got turnovers - frustrate/slow down the opposition ball etc - he is not as effective in doing that as he used to be in the past."
this is a very common point of view from the casual observer of McCaw.
i can assure u that i have watched every All Black 2013 test at least 7 times minimum each from start to finish, have watched parts of the game i really liked at least another 30 times, plus the analysis i give on certain players and McCaw is always one of those players.

there is zero evidence to back up ur claims about McCaw not being effective at the breakdown, McCaw has understood for a long time that just being the first to breakdown and competing is always going to force the opposition to commit numbers which equals less players they have elsewhere, or slow the ball down, which gives his team more time to get defensively settled, and this is something i know from consistently watching his game he ALWAYS does.

against the Boks, with McCaws workrate is big reason why the Boks have failed the All Black test, not a single one of those Bok loosies can keep up with his workrate.
the best Bok player to do that was brussow, but he had a girly body and couldnt handle being breathed on let alone playing a handful of tests in a row, and his ball in hand game plus link work was non existent.

by McCaws own admission, theres still plenty of improvement in his game, and thats just scary as F, considering he continues to outwork all his opposition and team mates and on the not so odd occasion even out play them.

ou maaaikie macaaaw is not half the forward Vermuelen is so dont stroke the egoes of these severely deluded kiwis.
Your trying to explain so gently how wee mcaaaw is over the hill and down the dale decline wise is a waste of energy. sasSUE will be screaming for mcaaaw to captain the abs when ricthie is 40.  brycy till he is 50 etc
Best leave the kiwis to their collective delusions and hope mcaaaaw continues as long as posssible. I fear next year the horrible truth will dawn and there will be loud lamentations and nashing of teeth and high pitched wailing as to why they didnt listen to Beeno!

He was supposedly at his peak in 2003 and 2007 and look at what happened.

He was supposedly on the decline in RWC 2011 and playing on one foot and look at what happened .

Maybe Meyers is hoping Bakkies will do a McCaw or a Thorn LOL

Nope hacked waaaagh we are not hoping for a bakkies doing a maccaaw. That would spell disaster.
I have every confidence some great locks are ememrging in Du Toit, Etzebeth, Willemse and Jaque Du Plessis Lood De jager. Bakkies is just mentoring the young uns along and showing them how it is done. Doubt if the great man will be aroung for world cup.
Never mention the 2011 world cup hawka it's nz's darkest hour and no a picture would not al ter that fact.
