Whew, what a fantastic day of sport!
Well done to Marion Bartoli on winning the Wimbledon womens singles title. Of all the major sporting events today, this was the one I watched the least of and I must admit I was really hoping Sabine Lisicki would win today, but well done to Bartoli . . . even though I'm not sure how well she played, there was just too much other sport on.
Congrats to anyone who backed Heavy Metal in the Durban July. I got cleaned out in my PA, my Pick 6, my Jackpot and all my Durban July Swingers and Trifectas but I miraculously made all my money back in the Garden province Stakes when I won the quartet after the great Beach Beauty (should have been a July runner) pulverized her field.
Well done to Lewis Hamilton on his pole position but I'll be pulling for Sebastian Vettel tomorrow.
Congratulations to the Stompies, the Cheetahs and the Bulls. The Bulls weren't at their best and the Sharks really should have won that game, but they only have themselves to blame for not only picking a has-been palooka who still hasn't learned basic rugby tackling technique after nearly 15 years in the game, but for actually making the clown their captain after dropping Keegan Daniel at the last minute.
The Stompies made heavy weather of beating the Kings and they should really have been down to 14 men after Abby "Bruno" Elizabeth completely lost the plot again in another outrageous display of roid rage. No-one's disputing his talent but this stupid macho business of always trying to be the hard man is making him into a liability.
The Cheetahs gave the only quality performance of any SA S15 rugby teams today and congrats to them on making the playoffs.
Daryl Impey showed tremendous courage in hanging on to his Yellow Jersey for a lot longer than most people thought he would, but as expected, the big climbs of the day were too much for him but he did amazingly well to hang on to the peleton for a lot longer than many team leaders and some recognized specialist climbers. Chris Froome was absolutely magnificent and that was one of the most dominating performances I've seen in the Tour and well done to Richie Porte as well who showed great strength and did the same job for Froome that Froome did for Bradley Wiggins last year. The little Columbian climber nairo Quintana was also very impressive but his inexperience showed when he attacked way too early. no question this guys is still going to be a big factor in future Tours and he may still win a mountain stage this year.
Biggest congrats of the day go to the Mighty British and Irish Lions who humbled the hapless Shackledraggers. Warren Gatland will be particularly relieved because the result vindicated his decision to drop Brian O'Driscoll but I'm actually surprised there was such a stink about this in the first place. O'Driscoll was never a first choice anyway and he only played in the first two tests because of the injury to Manu Tuilagi. Leigh Halfpenny is surely the player of the series but is George North now the world's best winger? What a fantastic result and what a great tour. Long may the Lions tradition continue!
