erox Golden Lions scrumhalf Ross Cronje has been called up to the Springbok tour squad in Cardiff as replacement for Rudy Paige.

Paige injured his medial knee ligaments in training earlier this week and will be out for approximately four weeks.

A request was made for Toulouse scrumhalf Jano Vermaak to rejoin the squad but it was rejected as he is playing for his club this weekend.

"Ross impressed during a very successful Absa Currie Cup campaign for the Golden Lions and also showed good form earlier in the year in Vodacom Super Rugby," said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.

"We considered not calling up a third scrumhalf but that would've been very risky."

Cronje will link up with the Springboks in Cardiff on Friday.

If Ross isn't in the matchday squad, (which he isn't) why spend money on him?

Is this how desperate we are at scrumhalf...
Ross Cronje?

Now that is scraping the barrel!

What happened to Piet van Zyl?

I think they're just drawing names from a hat now.

Fair point Blob, unlikely but not impossible.

No idea Chippo. It's hard to keep track when half the Currie Cup player base is on tour with the Boks

 Pakie
He wa not on the original squad list - that hooke from the Lions were.  However, as far as I can faintly recollect when th guy was injured during training Scara gor called up to the squad.
It is always necessary to ahve a stand-in for hookers and scrummies - especially if it should happen that on the morning of the match a player wake up wit flue - or even a pain in the wrong place - and you may be with out a match day 23.

Ross has been pretty enterprising for the Lions. Not nearly as bad a choice as some oaks are making out. Is Faf De Klerk injured and if so when is he due back?Scurra was called up - all 90odd kgs of him. Is he the guy you want in the front row against England etc.
