In the grand finale of the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific, Ruben Love's commanding performance not only led the Hurricanes to a 60-5 victory over Damian McKenzie’s Chiefs but also sparked a debate on the All Blacks' fly-half position for the upcoming Nations Championship. Held at Hnry Stadium, the match showcased Love outshining McKenzie, who struggled significantly, marking perhaps the most decisive individual battle of the season.

Former All Black Stephen Donald lauded Love's play, noting, "It was his best performance that we’ve seen in a 10 jersey. He’s been very good all year, but when you factor in the occasion," highlighting the pressure Love was under and his stellar response to it. Mils Muliaina, another All Blacks legend, admired Love's maturity and team-first approach. "That’s what impressed me most, that maturity. The kicking, how much confidence can you get out of those goal kicks that he was doing in conditions like that?" he reflected.

"The harder he tried, the more errors he made."

This observation by Jeff Wilson encapsulated Damian McKenzie's struggles during the final. Despite a strong season, McKenzie's performance in the decisive game left much to be desired. In contrast, Love’s ascent in form was timely. "Across the course of the season, what you would say is Ruben Love didn’t play a lot of rugby earlier on and then he came back and he’s really got his confidence and belief," Wilson added, suggesting that Love's late-season surge could tilt selection decisions in his favor.

Love's synergy with full-back Callum Harkin was particularly effective, enhancing the Hurricanes' offensive dynamics. Donald pointed out, "The fascinating thing around Ruben’s game is his combination with Harkin. Even though Ruben was under a lot of pressure at times, he could get that flat, quick pass away and Harkin’s already on the outside."

With McKenzie's off day, Muliaina suggested a positional switch might benefit the team, saying, "So what makes that decision a little bit easier for Dave Rennie is the fact that a Damian McKenzie could be that full-back, the guy that sweeps round a little bit later." This adjustment could optimize McKenzie’s contributions without the primary playmaking responsibilities.

The contrasting fortunes of Love and McKenzie in the final have set the stage for intriguing selection decisions for the All Blacks as they prepare for their international fixtures. As the rugby community debates, it's clear that performances in key matches like these not only shape careers but also influence team strategies at the highest levels.
