He has no chance of coaching rugby in SA - he made a total mess of the Springboks and could not win anything with what he sees as the game to be played, His player selection was a mess as well, If the team included some players from the Lions and not from the hospital wards he emptied, the result may have been different.
In the 2015 WC squad were 8 of the 31 players that should never have been in the squad and in fact became unplayables. He also had a scrappy development progrmame like having youngsters to replace the unplayables after the Japan loss in the WC. They had to play in all the remaining games. The fact is that there are 31 players in the squad to allow for resting of players in games against low-ranked teams. Meyer could not use the unplayables - since any further loss would have taken them out of the series, He used the same players in all games up to the semi and the players were never rested during the season - they were out on their feet by the time the semi took place. Another result of the problem was a game plan that was so predictable - it could easily be countered.
If one looks at the real situation you would find that none of the players other than AM played more than 2 games in the Round Robin stage of the 2019 tournament and at the end of the tournament ended up with 5 games as against the 7 played in 2015. That made a huge difference in performance in the play-offs. .
I hate to say it because there will be screams of fury - but the unplayables included De Villiers, Matfield, Alberts, Morne Steyn. Kirchner, Oosthuizen and Paige with even Pienaar ending up in that category after the Japan disaster. Meyer should have chosen the best performing players for the WC - but he chose players who have not played any rugby for up to 18 months before the WC started.
My problem was always that Meyer's selections was a nightmare based on reputation and not actual performance and younger players were always panic selections to be dropped after playing one or two games.
As to a game plan - there really was none other than a near to total disregard of backline play. He was forced into picking Le Roux after a Kirchner injury and then could not drop him afterwards. The poor Morne performances forced him into selecting Pollard at flyhalf - but Pollard was never really allowed to settle in as flyhalf. In the end the two really promising players in the backline went flat as a pancake when it comes to the game plan they were forced into. Both took three years to recover from that malady - it took Erasmus a lot to get them and other demoralized players to start performing on test level again.
Meyer's game plan went awry after 2008 and I cannot see him replacing coaches in SA at present. That would make his employment in the SA environment rather iffy and I do not see a future in coaching for him other than perhaps on Varsity Cup level - where his hang-up on reputation players will be cured and he may yet see a way through leading to proper usage of backline players.
The Maties coaching job is vacant - so maybe he could go there and at the same time learn how top rugby should be played.
