I was in a prime seat at the test and it was clear that the referee tried his utmost to cheat the Springboks out of winning the test.  It was a seriously flawed referee performance.

However, that does not justify what happened with the referee and when Van Zyl was arrested - there was such strong animosity against the referee that a large number of spectators lined up to pay legal cost of Van Zyl and any fine that may be imposed,   I saw this with my own eyes when leaving the stadium at the end of the game.   Did not join the line, but could understand what happened.

It is apparently acceptable to some that the referee has the right to decide which team should win a match and then there should be no repercussions - there always are.   In this case there was an extreme and unacceptable result,  something  that should never happen.             

Did not see that  McCaw intervened  - it was rather SA players who intervened and helped the referee in that case.   

I was seated not more than 25 meters away from where that incident took place.
