The following team has been announced :

15 Leolin Zas, 14 Travis Ismaiel, 13 Francois Venter, 12 Howard Mnisi, 11 Courtnall Skosan, 10 Garth April, 9 Nic Groom, 8 Nizaam Carr, 7 Oupa Mohoje (c), 6 Sikhumbuzo Notshe, 5 Stephan Lewies, 4 JD Schickerling, 3 Vincent Koch, 2 Scarra Ntubeni, 1 Thomas du Toit

Replacements :

16 Malcolm Marx, 17 Lizo Gqoboka, 18 Coenie Oosthuizen, 19 RG Snyman, 20 Jean-Luc du Preez, 21 Piet van Zyl, 22 Francois Brummer, 23 Lukhanyo Am

Some selections are jokes, eg –

*   Ntubene ahead of Marx;

*   Schickerling ahead of Snyman;

*    Coenie Oosthuizen in the squad;

*    Francois brummer – what a f#ck?

Of the 23 players 11 are BEE players – so one must accept quo tas are a fact in this case.   Some of those are not even Super Rugby standard, what about anything higher.

Haaaaaahahahahahaaaa ... yes Dave, of course he is.
That would have been a solid front row had Marx been included.
Glad to see April in the starting 15.
I hope Venter has a cracker. Same goes for Snyman.
The rest aren't worth mentioning. Sub standard ... nothing special ... mostly quotas.

I actually agree with Klown. Marx would be my starting hooker if it was me. Not just for this team but the Bok team.

Glad to see April slot straight into the starting XV. Great opportunity to show if his excellent form when he filled in for Lambie was just a fluke or if he's got what it takes.

Schickerling ahead of Snyman is the first bit of WP bias we're seeing from AC.

Anyone know what more Jamba Ulengo has to do to get some recognition . . . or does he have some injury I'm not aware of?

Francis Dummer is the worst flyhalf around- except for the other 130 kg flyhalf that plays for the Kings.
Connie is the worst scrummager in world rugby; he would be better at scrumhalf where he would still worse than useless- but better than a total match winner for the opposition.
I wonder if this was disruptive to training having the reserves get shunted back to the A team- where they have taken up places
The back row will get bullied at the breakdown, so hopefully it is a fast open game

Well, one thing we know, our beloved ANCYL will still not be satisfied with this lot and they'll be toyi-toying outside SA "A" team games as well.

By the way, can't we find ourselves a decent name for our "A" team (which we all know should really be regarded as the "B" team).

The Poms have the "Saxons" which reflects a lot (not all) of their ancestry . . . maybe we could have the "Nguni"?

Frankly I cannot see that so-called "A"  team winning anything.   Too many passengers and two few real quality players.   Even Ackerman would find it hard to make a team out of that lot.   Maybe the team was selected to prove that SARU is in earnest with their quota selections - but it could backfire badly on them.   If the team loses - which is highly likely - the White players will be blamed for the loss.   There are some white duds in the team - eg Brummer and scrum-deficient Oosthuizen, but the real problems would be the defenseles Mnisi, and the loosie combination will be poorer than poor.

Does Alistair or Ackers pick the A-Team? "Transformation" or the exposure of POC players are obviously priority in the selection of this side...which is actually a better platform to blood fringe "target" players than the Bok side would be. Brummer....Meh!!! I would have gone with my WP bias and picked JLdP instead.

Ou Maaik, you really are the blinding light of optimism on this message board. You always see the good in everything and you focus on the positive. You have a real gift.

Draad, I don't know for a fact but I guess Ackers picks his own team and has to apply even stricter quotas than AC.

I like that side but for Brummer, Coenie and Piet. I liked Piet a few years ago, but now he really isn't good enough.

Has the Saxons team been announced yet?
Probably wouldn't know many names even if they were.
Is the Saxons the English B team?
Anybody know whether they have a quality side?

CC, scroll down a bit. Dave posted the team here, but did not comment. I'm not up to standard on NH rugga and recognised only a few names. I guess I'll see on Friday.

The Saxons are the England A side. They are a good side and have the luxury of having played together a bit as they compete in an equivalent 6Ns.

The Bok A side is good thanks to the depth in SA rugby but it is far from being the best side that could have been chosen thanks to the dreaded fucking quota.
For a start Zas is not a 15. Ismiel is good but not better than Ulengo or v/Wyk.
Frans Venter should be at 12 not 13. Mnisi is good but Rohan Janse v Rensburg is better as is Esterhuizen.
April looks handy but Goosen is better.
Scara is a good hooker but Marx is twice the player. Akers is better to.
JD and Lewies are good but the likes of Paul Willemse, Jenkins and Snyman are better.
The loose trio is good but the likes of Kirsten, du Preez twins, Jacques du Plessis, Arno Botha and Liebenberg could have improved it.
It's a good side but not the best we could have selected...just like the Bok side will be....when Beast is ahead of Kitshoff, Mapoe ahead of Kriel, Mvovo ahead of Combrink and Louw ahead of Kriel

Like you, I guess I'll get to know them real well during this tour.
Can't wait.

Mnisi - whether playing in any position is a defensive liability and a serious one at that.   I think between April and Mnisi the Celts are going to run riot.  That is why Mnisi in recent matches for the Lions was on the bench and Van Rensburg started.

Mnisi is fine defensively ... Janse van Rensburg just offers a lot more on attack and is in fact the better player ... hence his selection.

 These things happen, Mike.
Do you know of a player that plays the perfect match at every outing?
Me neither.
The best we can hope for is as much consistency as possible.
The better players tend to provide us with more of that than those slightly less talented.
Mnisi is still a solid player and I'm glad to have him in the Lions mix.

Mike this is what irritates me about rugby followers......they are so short sighted. It does not come worse than Moz, who defines players by the odd missed tackle or mess up at some point.

You are doing the same with Mnisi......he had ONE game where his defence was poor, for the rest its been good and his form with ball in hand has been very good

He is a quality centre and you are speaking utter shit

Dave

I have checked Mnisi’s record since the ijruy to Vorter against the Chiefs and came up with the following  from a defense perspective:-

Highlanders

Ball turnovers conceded    -       4

Tackles made                       -       5

Tackles missed                    -        1

Crusaders

 Ball turnovers conceded    -       2

Tackles made                        -       4

Tackles missed                     -        2

Hurricanes

 Ball turnovers conceded    -       1

Tackles made                       -        6

Tackles missed                    -        1

Blues-  Bench

 Tackles made                       -       1

Tackles missed                    -        1

Jaguares

Tackles made                       -       8

Tackles missed                    -        0

Bulls – Bench

Ball turnovers conceded    -       1

Tackles made                       -        1

Tackles missed                    -        0

Mnisi looks good in attacking play – but to my mind a ball loss specialist and also questionable in defense  -  especially against stronger teams.  That is why in games  in the last three Super Rugby matches he was twice on the bench – Van Rensburg preferred to him.

Well ... it's a good thing you aren't the Bok coach ... cause the only players that would crack your team is the injury prone Goosen and the dimwitted slack jawed Lood.
The rest are all f0kkin useless.

CC - With respect - balls.   That is not what is evident from my postings.   I have  reservations about some players and differ from you about others.   I dealt with the performances of Goosen purel because of rubbish stories on this site about the player on this site - not because I want him as a Springbok flyhalf.   The fact that I wrote about him does not mean that I necessarily want him in the team.   If he is selected he will not let the team down - like some others may.
