In a bold move that's set to shake the foundations of international rugby, Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus has unveiled a lineup with a mix of fresh faces and seasoned warriors for the upcoming brawl against the Barbarians in Gqeberha this Saturday. Notably, SA U20 captain and lock, Riley Norton, along with Bordeaux Bègles' tighthead prop Carlü Sadie, will make their Test debuts in the starting XV.

The squad also sees uncapped talents like Stormers hooker JJ Kotze, flank Paul de Villiers, and Junior Boks flyhalf Vusi Moyo on the bench, ready to prove their mettle. Norton, who is also gearing up to lead the SA U20 at the Junior World Championship in Georgia, has already caught Erasmus’s eye with his mature demeanor.

"He’s definitely a guy who’s got maturity about him, coming into the Springbok set-up as a young guy. He’s definitely not at all windgat, he’s confident, and there’s an aura around him,"

Erasmus praised.

Adding to the surprises, Lions fullback Quan Horn will make an unexpected appearance at flyhalf, partnering with Grant Williams at scrumhalf. The rest of the team comprises stalwarts like Cheslin Kolbe and Siya Kolisi, ensuring a blend of experience and innovation on the field.

Erasmus emphasized the strategy behind these selections, stating,

"We wanted to give a few players returning from injury and others who have been playing overseas game time in this match, while at the same time exposing some of the younger players on our radar to top-class international rugby,"

reflecting a clear vision for the season’s challenges which include the Nations Championship and Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series.

On facing the Barbarians, Erasmus acknowledged the unique challenges posed by a team as eclectic and seasoned as theirs.

"They have a group of exciting and experienced players in their squad, and they’ll come out guns blazing and try to produce an entertaining style of rugby, which will serve as a good test for us,"

he noted, highlighting the perfect opportunity for the new caps to sink their teeth into top-level play.

The full team lineup is as follows: Aphelele Fassi, Cheslin Kolbe, Jesse Kriel, André Esterhuizen, Edwill van der Merwe, Quan Horn, Grant Williams, Jasper Wiese, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Siya Kolisi (c), Franco Mostert, Riley Norton, Carlü Sadie, André-Hugo Venter, and Ox Nché. The bench includes JJ Kotze, Ntuthuko Mchunu, Zachary Porthen, Ben-Jason Dixon, Paul de Villiers, Evan Roos, Faf de Klerk, and Vusi Moyo.

This Saturday's match is more than just a game; it's a crucible for the future of South African rugby, showcasing the potential stars who will carry the team forward. Under the strategic eye of Erasmus, the Springboks are not just playing to win; they're playing to evolve.
