This is not a huge quake, but it hit some old towns with stone buildings and probably with inadequate foundations. It's a charming area, with towns that have evolved over centuries.....largely unplanned, evolving with each generation's needs.
I recall one wonderful lunch at a restaurant not far from the devastated area. On a river gorge with a small Roman ruin on the site..... fragile medieval buildings across the river, seemingly clinging to the edge of the gorge.
The Italian patrons just kept arriving in large families...grandparents, parents and children. Many knew each other.....everybody talking and laughing seemingly at the same time. A human scene......you never ordered, the food just kept coming to your table....dish after delicious dish.
One can only hope that help is quick and generous.
