i never read that and can u remember where he said it??? there was one article i remember where cj said something along the lines of he wouldnt mind playing for ireland.

very stupid of meyer to not want cj, in cjs first starting match for munster he scored 2 tries and was man of the match, a perforamnce similar to many of his bulls game in 2012.

thats a big loss, especially if he wants to play for the Boks, yet meyer has no problem bringing in some one like gunthro. o_O

So Stander was captain of the Junior Boks in 2010, drafted straight into the Blue Bulls, gets 36 caps for them, included in the Bok training squad prior to the England series in 2012 (a clear message from Meyer that he is part of their plans) but doesn't make the team in a position where SA is loaded  - sounds like a standard progression for development of young talent. 

However the very same month Stander is invited to the Bok training squad he instead signs with Munster snubbing the Boks overtures, with half an eye on being part of the future Irish squad, abandons the country that bestowed upon him the highest honor it could on a junior player and goes for the riches and opportunity of the NH.

Cuts both ways.

Yet Meyer is depicted as an idiot for not selecting him now (an overseas uncapped player) including by some that maintain Meyer should not select overseas players............ huh???  aaah, the sweet irony !!!

As an anecdote - I read that JP Pietersen is getting FIVE TIMES his combined Bok and Sharks salary in Japan. That is the kind of money that can set you up for a lifetime - would JP be actually making the wrong decision for himself and his family if he had turned that down?

 Thank you Becs - thats the answer I was looking for. Principle is the only thing that will stand in the face of the materialism of the professional era. Stander is the one who made the choice to leave even as he was part of the Boks plan but not at level he wanted - sour grapes? I am sure he was well paid with the Bulls - at least relative to everyday SA'ns. And we're talking about a Jr Bok captain - you would think there should have been more loyalty from him and an understanding of the process.

Saff - I agree that the Bok team is the only thing that SARU can really do to keep these boys in SA, but handing out caps just because they are good young players and may leave seems an arbitrary use of what should be something that is exclusive and takes hard work and time to achieve. The professional era has cheapened what it means to represent ones country because of the number of games - all in the name of revenue. Lions tour is a success partly because it only happens every four years. The Springbok jersey has to again become something special - a club to which membership requires some sacrifice. To my mind the only way SARU would be able to keep these blokes is by enforcing a rule that a player that leaves to play elsewhere forfeits his ability to ever play for the Boks. As an ex-pat I have tremendous respect for my friends who have stayed and slogged it out through all the fear, violence, injustice, bias and genuinely hard times - that is the true South African experience and as far as I'm concerned the longer I live away from that in relative comfort and security the less I can truly say I'm a South African. If the Springboks are a representative team of South Africans then it should reflect that reality.

Oimatey what part of CJ being the best loosie we have did you not get? The lad should have been awarded a cap by now on merit.

Given some of the insults that have won Bok caps in the past, awarding CJ with a cap would hardly tarnish the honour now would it.

You can either be a short sighted stupid coach, or you can be one who is insightful, imaginative and one with their finger on the pulse.........the one that is missing out on the services of CJ is certainly not the latter

I myself have also just got back from touring over in south africa with my College team!

It was truely amazing and no doubt about it they are light years ahead of us they train many more days than us and harder they also play a much fast tempo game than any english team i have ever played against! 

but i hope he enjoyed his time :)
