Kings must answer to SARU over rule breach New Zealand centre Hadleigh Parkes

Super Rugby's newcomers the Southern Kings will have some answering to do as the South African Rugby Union (SARU) say that they have noted that the Kings have breached their rules.

The Kings, like all South African Rugby Franchises, are limited to playing two foreigners in their Super Rugby squads.

The Southern Kings applied for an increase in this figure but SARU said that they will not make an exception for any team.

Last weekend in Round 5, Southern Kings captain Darron Nell was injured in the run up to the match so they brought in Argentina-born loose forward Tomas Leonardi on the bench.

Leonardi joined his fellow Argentinean Nicolas Vergallo on the bench.

Leonardi came on against the Chiefs 10 minutes before half time and then again in the second half while Vergallo came on at the end of the match.

The problem for the Kings is that New Zealand centre Hadleigh Parkes started the match which meant that they played three foreigners in the match day squad.

The Kings actually had five foreigners in their squad against the Chiefs as Namibian prop Jaco Engels and Kenyan utility forward Daniel Adongo were also in the team but SARU says that African players are not foreigners.

Due to the breach of rules the Southern Kings could now face a deduction of points or a substantial fine or possibly both.

u have got to be freaking kidding me. i will tell u this in a way u can understand,,,

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR SARU TO DEDUCT ANY POINTS FROM ANY TEAM IN THE SPXV!!!

why??? becuae they dont run it, its run by SANZAR, o_O

just because it was published on superrugby site dosent mean jack didly shit. the superrugby site also published an article where SARU said the lions would not be relegated for the kings in 2013, gee how did that turn out???

the only way SARU can get points deducted from the kings is if they log an offical complaint to SANZAR which SANZAR must agree to after taking everything into consideration.
the only thing that will amount from this is a hefty fine from SARU.

hey i just NZRU will award kiwi teams an extra competiton point for every try a team scores, i mean what can SANZAR do about it???

tsk tsk tsk,,,Lord have mercy, o_O

SANZAR: No Kings suspension

2013-03-20 14:27   Greg Peters (Gallo Images)
Cape Town - SANZAR CEO Greg Peters has ruled out proposed punishments for the Kings after the team breached SARU’s rules by fielding three foreign players in their Super Rugby game against the Chiefs.

Speaking to the Sharksworld website, Peters confirmed that SARU does not have the jurisdiction to suspend the Kings or to dock the team points, as that would “affect the competition as a whole”.

Only SANZAR is empowered to act against any team that will in any way affect competition participation or log standings.

When the Kings played three foreign players they were not acting against SANZAR’s rules.

“It is not our laws that have been breached,” Peters said.

SANZAR has no such existing limit on the use of foreign players, for example, the Rebels were allowed by the ARU to field up to ten foreign players after the team entered Super Rugby in 2011.

SARU's only remaining recourse is to impose a financial penalty on the Kings.
