The South African Rugby Union (SARU) announced that 15 players have been awarded Springbok contracts for 2013, though Bryan Habana, Morne Steyn and JP Pietersen have been overlooked.

This list includes exciting youngsters such as Eben Etzebeth, Marcell Coetzee, Juan de Jongh and Pat Lambie as well as Jean de Villiers, Tendai Mtawarira and Bismarck du Plessis.

The group - whose average age is just over 26 years - includes the core of the Springboks Test players from 2012, while players who are based overseas or who have signed contracts with overseas clubs, were not awarded national contracts.

"We've kept as many of our top players in South Africa as we could by awarding them national contracts, despite the powerful lure of the pound, euro and yen," said SARU CEO Jurie Roux.

"We worked hard with the Springbok Management and Sarpa to ensure the best possible deal is placed on the table for the players. A further five contracts are still available and will be finalised in due course.

"Last year provided Heyneke Meyer with an ideal opportunity to see what is needed in the Test arena, and by contracting this group of players, we have secured a core group for 2013. The average age of the contracted group is not very high for Test rugby, which bodes well for the future."

The following players, who represented the Springboks last year but will be leaving South Africa to play abroad in the next couple of months, were not awarded contracts: Andries Bekker, Juandré Kruger, Steyn, Habana, Pietersen and Zane Kirchner.

"All six of these players were going to receive contracts, but the fact that they have indicated that they have signed with overseas clubs or are planning to do so, has ruled them out of the reckoning," said Roux.

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer added: "I'm very excited about the contract group. Most of these players showed last year they have what it takes to play for the Springboks and they can only get more experienced and improve further.

"Losing experienced players to overseas teams is not ideal, but it's their right to further their careers abroad."

Springbok contract group: Willem Alberts, Marcell Coetzee, Juan de Jongh, Jean de Villiers, Bismarck du Plessis, Jannie du Plessis, Eben Etzebeth, Francois Hougaard, Pat Lambie, Tendai Mtawarira, Pierre Spies, Frans Steyn, Adriaan Strauss, Flip van der Merwe, Duane Vermeulen.

The above really is a shocking state of affairs.   Nearly half the players mentioned should play Vodacom Rugby - not even be considered for Super 16 - leave alone Springbok selection.   Amongst the above lot that is seriously poor are the following:-

*   Marcell Coetzee - a serious disappointment in Super 15 his year

*  Juan de Jongh - SARu must have gone mad here - he is a disastrously poor defender and useless in attack

*   Jannie Du Plessis - has gone backwards badly this year and struggle to make the Sharks starting line-up this year.

*   Francois Hougaard -   has shown nothing this year and was seriously deficient last year

*   Frans Steyn - absolutely useless in Super 15 this year - if it is not for injuries he would not make the starting line-up for the Sharks

*   Flip van der Merwe - hot and cold - more cold than hot this year.

SARU said Meyer was consulted - but Meyer is going dotty and obviously lost the plot completely if he recommended the above.   If one looks at his training camp and the above rubbish - Meyer will be as a coach an equal disaster to Straueli.

Yeah ... it's not looking good.

Can't believe the stupidity at times.

Still ... I have hope that Meyer will see the light.

Saffex

Calm down now - do you really believe some of the above players mentioned deserve a contract.  I know you are mad about some of my comments and expected it - but I am at least onjective about what the players produced thus far this year.

There is one thing I cannot understand on your part.  That is that you identify a player - who in your mind you turn into a superstar.   Then you refuise to recognize poor performances and deficiencies of such a player and if he did mess up completely you use the term "it happens" to overwrite the deficiencies.

Because statistics produce different results from how you read performances of your star players - you fuind a way out by saying it does not reflect "context",  Thats fine - but if the same tendency happen game after game for six or seven games the context argument becomes a farce - since the players performances shows a clear trend emphasizing the same achievements or the same deficiencies.

There is on thing as clear as daylight - Steyn was poor in the tests last year - and shit poor in the games he played this year.   Any objetive observer will confirm that statement.

Yep, you award contracts to players you identify as being class acts, proven test players. The only player who should not have received a contract is Juan de Jongh

I think that it was Naive to award bok contracts so early. This is an area that needs serious addresing. I have to agree, half the players above don't deserve contracts.

What this now means is that Fat Steyn only needs to coast through the super 15 and be selected for the boks because he is on the books and needs to be used.

Some of these players need a bit of extra motivation. We have become so dependant on experience that we ignore form. We saw what happend in 2011 WC and looks like it is set to conitnue.

SARU need to come up with a better system. I say contract 45 of the best performing players and devide them into 3 tiers. Players get moved into each tier depending on their performance. If they are in tier 3 they are at risk of losing their contract.

TAKE A BOW SARU....

its was by far the best possible move....this will at least give rugby administrators some bargaining chip to work with in future if we want to keep our top flight players....it will become even more impossible as the contracts in terms of money grows but at least SARU has sent a clear signal that personal gain cannot be set before country.

well done to rassie and jurie and the rest of the SARU board....right decision in the end.....

players like louw that middle fingered SARU when he was offered to come back should not be chosen. there is no room for that type of brat mentality.

WE SHOULD BE LOYAL TO THOSE THAT APPLY THERE TRADE IN SOUTH AFRICA AS THAT INTERNATIONAL EXP WILL BENEFIT OUR RUGBY IN THE LONG RUN...

the next step should really be for SARU to ditch SANZAR and move with france and england into there own super club comp
