European clubs targeting Springboks to join their cash-flush clubs after next year’s Rugby World Cup will this time have more of a fight on their hands than before, after the South African Rugby Union’s Springbok contracts are likely to be enforced with more vigour.

According to the supersport.com website, in recent days we’ve seen growing reports of Boks that may be heading overseas after the Rugby World Cup. This week it was Duane Vermeulen’s link with a French club and Bath – the latter willing to offer around R7.8 million a year for the IRB Player of the year nominee’s services.

Previously both Flip van der Merwe and Eben Etzebeth have been linked with moves overseas to French clubs while sources in France tell of Jannie and Bismarck du Plessis, Francois Hougaard, Willie le Roux and even Jan Serfontein being privately courted with offers to go overseas.

However, here is the catch. Those with Springbok contracts cannot enter into any negotiations with any club before July 1, 2015, leaving them a matter of two months to sort out their post-World Cup careers before the showpiece event takes place.

November tours are rife with agents “popping in” to Bok hotels, and it is understood from private conversations that a number of Boks who are eyeing a move to Europe want their post-World Cup options sorted out long before the tournament so that they can ideally concentrate on the Springbok campaign.

With the Bok form over the past few years under Heyneke Meyer, coupled with the falling Rand, it has made top South African players lucrative for particularly the French clubs, but with a normal outflow of talent after a World Cup expected, there is likely to be a renewed hunt for top Boks in the coming months.

SARU currently have 20 top players under contract – the one notable exception being Handre Pollard who is contracted at the Bulls until 2017 – and right now it is known that at least one player has asked permission to negotiate with French clubs to secure his future.

But for the others, if they are negotiating with clubs during this time, it is in breach of their contract and they could see a heavy handed reply from SARU, especially as the national body has to ensure that the top talent stays in South Africa as much as possible.

The role of agents in actively marketing their players at this stage, and out of the prescribed window, also leaves much to be desired, although it must also be said that it would be foolish to believe any player would not at least listen to the big money offers that are being thrown around at the moment.

It is likely that SARU will take a softer approach on those players nearing the end of their careers – the Du Plessis brothers, Vermeulen and Van der Merwe for instance – but you could see a massive fight going forward to protect the up and coming talent, especially those such as Etzebeth and Serfontein from heading overseas.

SARU may not have the financial muscle to convince every player to stay in South Africa, but the new approach to Springbok contracts, coupled with a more focused mindset will see a renewed approach to keeping a number of young players on these shores, especially as pressure mounts and salaries rise.

As it stands now, if players on Bok contracts do not ask for permission, SARU can reserve the right to give them a clearance certificate to join their new clubs, or force them to see out their contracts until December 31, 2015, which would mean they would miss out on half the European season, something the foreign clubs would not be happy about.

Cant see this as anything more than buying a little time. What complete twits these NH parasites are!!!

There is nothing much SARU can do other than to enforce the present contracts.  At present - those not on a SARU contrct until 2016-17 cannot be held back from entering NH club contracts.
However, this I believe is becoming a problem for French and English rugby as well.  It hinders the development of local rugby talent and is bound in the longer term to have a negative effect on the national team.  One only has to look at soccer to see what a seriously detrimental impact it has on the national team.
Bad news all around - probably worse for SA sine the Springbok coach select players playing for NH clubs without any idea how those players perform atthe time of selection.   We have dud players - selected on reputation only - such as Morne Steyn, Bakkies Botha and Gurthro Steenkamp - in the present Springbok squad and then there are those like Ruan Pienaar, Jacque  Fourie and even Fourie du Preez - whose selection is entirely based on reputation.
If the exodus continues - the question of selection of Foreign-based club players should be under the spotlight to. Only those showing excellent performances should be selected and there shoulld be means to evaluate their continued performances before their selections are in fact made.

There is a simple solution. Leave the dreary, boring, dull, ailing South Hemisphere and join Europe. Simple.

The dreary and dull SH rugby - what absolute BS we have here.   The problem is that your misconception of rugby is linked to the team in SA that tries to play - rather unsuccesfully -  the NH style of rugby.
The ailing SH rugby is made up of two top teams in WR - so how ailing is it really doffies?
When the Sharks tried the same style of rugby this year - the public stayed away from their local matches.  That shows how dull and dreary the NH rugby style really is.
As Beeno pointed out - it is totally impractical - but that would never enter your feeble mind.

The English, Irish and French (in particular) clubs do not care about local talent, they hand out contracts left right and centre to foreigners in a bid to get the best players on the park.

The only time we will ever see a curb on the exodus of our players is when the NH put a cap on the number of foreigners they can play, which will likely never happen.

The best SA can do is look after their talented youngsters by investing in them with regards to game time and not ignoring them at the expense of old established players who we don't mind losing to the NH, safe in the knowledge that they remain in the picture in terms of Bok selection.

Far too often in SA, young talent is overlooked forcing these youngsters to leave for the money up North. If these players felt appreciated and were getting game time, chances are they would not be that eager to leave at such young ages.

Look at the likes of Quinn Roux, CJ Stander, Rory Kockott, Gerhard v/d Heever, v/d Walt, Jandre Marais, Peet Marais, Mjekevu, Jantjies, Josh Strauss, Rossouw de Klerk, Herbst and Brussouw that have left and the likes of Willemse and Ross that are leaving........add the likes of Pat Howard, Ollie Kebble, Tyler Fisher, Mnisi and Swiel who get such little game time and are the kinds of players who might seek greener pastures as a result.

It's not as simple as you say... game time?.....Chris Whittaker as an example was a fine scrummie but George Gregan kept him out......Mr Cricket couldn't get a run in the Ozzie side until he was in his thirties. We produce too many players who simply won't get a run for a number of reasons, no coach would ignore talent. The quota problem is a thorn in our side, something no other rugby country has to suffer.

I just find it frustrating when you see the likes of Coetzee giving game time to a player like v/d Spuy ahead of Pat Howard, or average Steenkamp being given time ahead of Quinn Roux or Plumtree playing the likes of old men Franco v/d Merwe or Wentzel ahead of the Marais brothers etc

Our coaches have no idea

We do have a cap on how many foreigners we can play...but the clever legal bods employed by the clubs wangle ways around that. Or we find that players suddenly develop the urge to become British at the drop of a hat, or find a long list Euro relative....as I say, the system is abused.n

Well whoever set the system up are obviously very incompetent.......I wish the bloody NH sides were not allowed any foreign based players............its the reason the NH national sides will never dominate the SH sides.......all the foreigners weaken your base.....for every foreigner playing, including the Welsh, Irish and Scots......deprives a potential English player from being exposed to the possibility of making it.

I know a handful of fantastic 18 year old players who hope to make it professionally but they are up against the world really

You don't have to tell me, Saffex !!
I've been saying this for years and I know plenty of youngsters who have had to call it quits because they have not had the chances they should have.
If it were up to me, I would put a stop to it right away.

We did offer Victor a contract years ago.......he was going to come but bailed at the last moment. He was actually on the same wages as our youth players but seemed to think that was a lot of money  Went to France instead.....and we all know how that panned out......

If we want to retain our players we need to move to Europe, something I really don't want to see.

But we just don't have the money to retain our players.

SARU should not sign the new Super 18 deal either, it is going to make a mockery of Super Rugby.

Other than that they need to restructure our rugby, and not select overseas players.

To be honest, I don't see a solution that SARU will embrace

We need to stop purchasing your players, simple.
Then again, we need consensus across the other Unions and I can't see that working. But we should make a stand at least.

The time of professional sport has arrived on RSA shores and is about to play havoc with SA players chasing real money.
Who can blame them.....why play for peanuts when you can make big bucks and live  life as it is meant to be lived.
Free, safe and secure.

I would put that plan on the back burner, Saffex....you won't have a prayer if UKIP gain further momentum
Maybe they will be the saviour of Rugby too....stopping the " foreigners " from  coming here and taking all the jobs ! It could happen.....the win win situation we were hoping for, biltongbek ! ( Just to clarify, I am being sarcastic )

AJ it appears that it is expected over the long haul that the Rand will weaken further. What is going to happen after the RWC. The money is so big these young players cant turn it down.
The idea that only older players will is wishful thinking. This being so picking overseas players will be unavoidable.
Hope there is a limit put otherwise we are getting into an increasingly difficult place.
This seaosn we want to challenge for the Super rugby title. What a start with Etzebeth, Vermulen and Howard said to be departingc- will Burger paly Super rugby.
Every year top class players depart. How in the world can you build a team up under these conditions? Our main team have become like the Cheetahs exce pt here the looting is done by the NH parasites.
