There has been a variety of opinions expressed on various issue. What is of interest is that most posters in fact agree that the referee absolutely destroyed a potentially interesting match - up
The other issue is that no team can play a top team for 50 minutes and expect to win.
I am a great admirer of Sam Cane - but he was up against a team with 7 forwards and two of the slowest loosies imaginable. However, I believe he is top class as is evidenced by m,e picking him as a loosie in my Foxsport selection - I unfortunately had him on the bench.
It I hard to do an objective assessment of player performances - especially amongst forwards when it is 8 players against 7 for 60% of the match. Fact is we need to wait and see what happens in the next test.
Insofar as the backline performances are concerned - the inside backs (Pienaar and Steyn) were putrid and a disgrace. Kirchner was an insult as well. That being the case - we have a situation that if there was a fair and equal contest up front - the Springboks could still have lost the game.
Poite turned a potentially good game into a farce - and I do not think it really is worthwhile to carry on iffing and butting about the test and the outcome. The result is indisputable - so it would be better to leave the matter as it stands..
