The closing of Newlands is another step away from our former greatness. The two Newlands grounds together with Kelvin Grove form one of the great sports complexes in World Sport. You couldn't plan it any better....all lost because of the white elephant at Green Point.
That monstrosity which spoils the whole Cape Town skyline was supposedly built because Newlands couldn't meet spectator minimums. Here are the grounds from the latest Soccer World Cup:
Luzhniki Stadium 80,000 Saint Petersburg Stadium 67,000 Sochi Stadium 48,000 Kazan Arena 45,000
.....
Newlands would have been fine.....gone along with the beautiful pines on Table Mountain victims of the inferiority complex that has to wipe out anything that smacks of colonialism.

We are hardly a mass market site....but every rugby site in RSA should be taking a position on Newlands. Use this string to sign up and present arguments for keeping this iconic ground.

That's a fair argument Bloo, but the success of the game is an offsetting factor. Many of the regulars at Newlands can walk to the ground from surrounding Rondebosch, Claremont and Newlands itself. Others come because they can park at Kelvin Grove and surrounding school grounds....it's a way of life in the Southern suburbs. Will these people get into the habit of going to Sea Point?
My guess is we will see an empty stadium, a crisis in the Newlands area, the end of Kelvin Grove and the jobs of their employees, knock on effects to Newlands cricket. High social costs.
There is no way to bring all these externalities in the calculus, which will be made purely on WP rugby numbers. But it's a bad decision for CapeTown....a result that would have been an 'acceptable loss' when the gravy train Stadium was approved.

Yep I played a curtain raiser game at Newlands once...I was amazed at how soft the field was, I felt I couldn't sprint when it was required. But what a great thing as a boy...running onto that field with tens of thousands watching.
The place is a cathedral to rugby.

Unless there is a massive change in South Africa (unlikely), Newlands is just a good memory. It is a shadow of what it was before. It is rife with corruption, and corruption in rugby will continue with or without Newlands.
The investment group (Romera or something) starting bailing them out, but I expect they quickly realised the bai l out money was being stolen into personal bank accounts of the "management" team.

Most traditions today are from the Ancient Greeks, ranging from legal, politics, economics, medical, media and science. Sure with the machine then computer ages, things have progressed, but the fundamentals are from the ancient Greeks (hardly Western)- and who are credited with inventing democracy and capitalism The systems associated with the modern era.

Actually I live in the States you tool, I can say anything I like without any fear of recriminations....and by the way, you want 'objectional behavior' not 'behavioural objections' which is pure gibberish. Do try to get the words in the right context if you insist on being so transparently pompous. The simplest word that conveys the meaning is usually best....try it, you might do better in life.

So tedious watching this 'principled' departer inching his way back. Now he is posting in the rugby section, but still under a false flag. What internal conflict would force a man to go through these gyrations?
