Save Newlands.....lend your name to a good cause
I support the\ retention of Newlands for obvious reasons.
I was going to fill this out myself, but maybe someone with more knowledge on the subject should do it instead. I found this site and if it's setup I'll spread it everywhere!

See Point Stadium was buildt because the ANC was positioned to make money off a revamped Newlands. Helen Zille decided to block it at all cost. The ANC was still in charge of the Cape metro at the time. The then local counselor for See Point...DA counselor voted against the See Point Stadium, because his constituents did not want the stadium there.
The DA Cape Town City Council has put alot of pressure on Newlands and the have passed a lot of bylaws to put further pressure on WP Rugby to move to the new stadium.
Typical liberalism. Force e everyone to conform to what's best for the greater good, regardless off whe were to blame for the problem in the first place.
You lot are probably going to hate me for this, but it does not change the fact that it is true. But before I make my main point, I do just want to point out the following. I think the Sea Point stadium was a stupid corrupt mistake, and it was completely unnecessary, but with that out of the way, there is the reality of where we are. In the Sea Point stadium there is a world class, state of the art stadium that is part of an iconic shoreline. You may not approve, but it is there, and it is there to stay. It is bigger than Newlands. It is being completely wasted. If one removes emotion and history from the decision, the Sea Point stadium it is the better stadium. The bottom line is that Cape Town seemingly cannot afford both stadiums, well at least that is my understanding of the situation. Therefore it is a choice between them. If one removes rugby from the equation, Sea Point is the better option.
The public anger should be directed at the management of Western Province Rugby for their financial mismanagement. It is that financial strife that has rendered Newlands stadium uneconomical, which has left the city of Cape Town viewing it as not much more than a financial burden.
To be clear, I don't support the idea of Newlands being canned, but the reality is the reality
The first match at Newlands took place in 1890. Newlands has thrived as a rugby ground for well over a century!
How long did it take Wakefield and his cronies to cause this financial mess. How long did it take Van Rooyen to bankrupt the wealthiest Union in world rugby - Transvaal.Folks, unfortunately, unless we can get decent folk in to run our government, Rugby Unions etc we are onto a hiding to nothing.
Too true Beans. As I said, the anger should be aimed at Wakefield and co, because they caused the mess. They are the only reason we are even having this discussion.
True Blue(Pardon the pun), WP management, current, and prior to Wakefield are the main culprits, but short sighted, self serving politicians played their roles too...DA and ANC alike. I've got a bit of inside info, hence my critique of Zille. Not saying she is corrupt or incompetent, far from it, but she lost focus in her quest to counter ANC corruption...and now we lost Newlands.
COCT, WP Rugby, WP Cricket and Football should have planned together for 2010, but the powers that be dropped the ball.
The WACA ,house of pain ,Carlaw Park [ RL ,I played curtain raisers there for tests vs GB then watched 'em with me old man]
All those intangibles that make a ground special mean bugger all to bean counting bastards.
Demolish the stupid relic of an unfortunate past. Let's move on. Broaden your horizons and lengthen your vistas.
Wow, a one post wonder. Moz, we are being trolled here. Wonder who would go through the effort to create an account and post that specific post? The world seems to be full of spite these days.
The investment group (Romera or something) starting bailing them out, but I expect they quickly realised the bai l out money was being stolen into personal bank accounts of the "management" team.
True Moz the stage fright can play funny tricks on a young lads mind ,the first up and under I missed by about 2 meters but the ground didnt open up and swallow me and I just ended up having fun with it.
Still struggling to see things from anything other than a egocentric/ethnocentric position eh? describing it as a 'cathedral' is cheap sentimentality and theatrical, Scarlett. As to corruption: Please name the perpetrators. Talk is cheap boy. Put your money where your mouth is. Do you have the balls?
Is there a petition going? How else are we going to express anything?
@Ndunginungo : That's a great idea! Let's also get rid of that Parthenon, Eiffel Tower, Great Pyramids, Great Wall of China etc. Yep, expand those horizons. Set ourselves free. Laughable. Those who show no respect for tradition or history exhibit no regard for what makes them great and who repeat the worst portions of it. This stadium is an enormous part of the traditions and history of SA rugby. The politicians know this, and want to destroy its history. Revisionism. The Hitlers or rugby.
Most traditions today are from the Ancient Greeks, ranging from legal, politics, economics, medical, media and science. Sure with the machine then computer ages, things have progressed, but the fundamentals are from the ancient Greeks (hardly Western)- and who are credited with inventing democracy and capitalism The systems associated with the modern era.
The Ancient Greeks were no doubt great thinkers, but most of these things go back much further than them! Egypt, Sumeria, Hindustan et al.
Ancient Zimbabwe replaced with whatever the hell it is now eh ?
There is always a surplus of demonstrated moral deficiency. Anonymous allegations of corruption, and a deafening silence when called on for details, is as far as it will go. I certainly don't expect to see ANY behavioural objection to the closure of your little 'cathedral' . No placards, no boycotts, no resistance. Maybe a (mostly pleading) letter or two to the press. Who knows, someone may have the courage to bring out the stationery. Stick to your anonymised vapid recriminations from a meaningless little internet platform, coward.
Uhuh. Makes complete sense to me now. The country that gave us televangelism, fastfood, cheerleading as a 'sport', nuclear holocaust, gridiron (300 pound morons in crash helmets and ballet tights), recreational shopping, GWB, and the Marilyn Monroe (slutty) look. Stay where you are.
Ndabaningi is Rooiaas trolling under another handle again...tries to disguise himself by doing certain things that old Red Neck wouldn't...LOL...Bahahahahahahahahahaha
You don't fool me
You're far too shrewd for this forum, Sebastien. You can't be fooled.
Yep ou rooitwit at it again. Hahahahhahahahahaha what a stirrer. But as usual Dr Moz sees him off with no problem! Hilarious stuff from ou rooitwit!!!!
I like that Marilyn Monroe look /
Ugly anger...misdirected. Bitterness eating away like cancer...sad whoever it is.
