Dave your enthusiasm is laudable. Who would you say was your best early detection? Did you spot Mostert as a Junior Bok in Japan n 2019?

There was not hing new to spot about Mostert in 2019. As after two defensive lapses where playera ran straight through attempted tackles in the matches against Aegentina im the RC and the All Blacks in the WC he was playing against poor opponent in the RC and not oin the starting line- up of the Springboks in the play-offs. IN 2019 he was already a 28 year old player and by far not a junior player anymore,

In this case Dave referred to a school level player under 18 year old - which in Mostert case goes back to 2008 - not to Mostert at 28 yyear old in 2019. Mostert in reality was never a front line back - he only was a substitute when proper locks were injured and when tested at 7 in 2019 - he was not top class either,

I watched the replay of the 2012 Under 20 RWC final in 2012 against the AB's in 2012 and the outstanding players were -

  1. Pieter-Steph Du Toit - who was a class act in 2012 and later in two years were World Player of the Year;
  2. Pollard - who replaced Jantjies younger brother was a serial flop in early matches and Pollard was solid player at flyahalf when he was 17 years old,
  3. Kitshof - who destroyed the Baby AB;s in scrmming and
  4. Serfomein - already at that stage a promising center,

What surprised me in re-watching was that Pollard's kicking at goal was iffy - he missed 3 of the 6 kicks at goal in the final and in line with the practice in 2012 kicked away through kicks not fnding touch was kicking balls away almost as much as the serial flop Morne Steyn did, However, there was a difference - in he case of two backline attacks - one after Du Toit carried the ball for about 20 meters from the Springboks 10 meter line to deep into the AB 22 meter area and the ball came back to the backline leading to a try being scored. The secomd try were also scored after a ball went wider.

One would see the Under 18 school kids playing foreign school teams in August this year and that is where will be potential future Springboks on display,

Hard to see at this level, given there is so much more space. Remember Tim Swiel, he looked excellent in junior rugby, but never really materialised at higher levels of the game.

Tim Swiel was gifted but lacked the hard edge - was a softie

Swiel though he was the top of the world and refused to play for the Springboks under 20 team and decamped to England to play club rugby in the hope that he would be playing fr England. As a result he became a softie and lost his game reading ability and instinctive decisionmaking which he showed when he was in school.

Not all school boy players and Under 20 players b ecome text players and it ened proper coaching and physical development to get them to perform later in their careers. IN SA the rugby school of excellence in Stllenbosch where the most promising school boys ended up and that is where they are developed as future test players,

There are also late physical developers that influence Under 20 and franchise players in their development,

Have you ever heard about the following:-

"Cricket is a game for gentlemen played by rogues - rugby is a game for rogues played by gentlemen"?

Shock shock it’s clear Shark has not watched a school boys rugby match in decades

So much space - my arse - the game has long moved on at school - plenty of structures in place including defence

Of course you can judge players at school level - what an utterly ignorant call
