SBW at Newlands

"The Blues have been given a massive boost in their push for the Super Rugby playoffs with the inclusion of Sonny Bill Williams in their side for Friday's clash against the Stormers in Cape Town.

Williams missed last weekend's 50-32 win over the Cheetahs in Auckland with concussion that had seen him withdrawn from the week prior's win over the Waratahs at half-time.

 

But the 31-year-old is fully recovered and will be looking for a dominant display as he continues his fight for an All Black starting berth in the upcoming British & Irish Lions tour. 

And while Williams' game-changing abilities are obviously a major plus for the Blues, assistant coach Steve Jackson says he offers far more than that. 

"The guys around him listen and get up for what he can do. We all know that he can offload and carry hard and tackle strong, but he talks really well as well," said Jackson.

"He's been fantastic again this week, especially having a lot of young boys around.

"He helps James (Parsons) with the captaincy duties as well and is part of a really strong leadership group."

Jackson added that Williams still had some way to go before he found his best. 

"He'll probably be the first to say that he's just getting back to form, but it's just him being out on the field," he said.

"He is passed everything at this stage so he's looking forward to Friday night and getting out there and having a run around with his team-mates.

"He brings a decent body, doesn't he? He's quite an athlete."

This is really going to be fun to watch.   The last time - as far as I can remember - SBW played at Newlands was in a game was where his direct opponent was De Allende.   In that game De Allende humiliated him and if De Allende is playing again on Saturday it would be interesting to see what happens on Saturday.

De Allende played the fool with SBW on the day - same as he did with Steyn in a game against the Sharks.   He broke past SBW twice as if he was not there and  even though unlike Steyn SBW did not land on his backside  after tackle attempts like Steyn did, he nonetheless could not stop the effectiveness of De Allende on attack.
As to defense of De Allende SBW did not get past him once and was from an attacking point of view neutralized totally.
However, De Allende is on the bench for the Saturday game and we will not see much of the competitiveness concerning SBW and De Allende in the game.  

Hmmmmmmmmmm......well here are the ESPN defence stats: ... .......TC T. MT. LW .... J JonghC 1 7 1 0 ... D AllendeC 1 7 4 0 ... S WilliamsC 3 4 0 0 ... You will note Williams missed no tackles, so the notion that Allende broke past him twice is a lie. You will also note Allende missed 4 of his 11 tackle attempts. Much worse than Williams but also worse than de Jongh. Allende had a few decent runs, nowhere did he beat Williams .... Once again a big mouth story with no substance. .

 For which year  Mozart?   I am not a liar as you constantly make me out to be -- so don't take the first stats that come to hand.    I think the year involved was 2012 as far as I can remember. 
In any event after the game there was a lot of discussion of the game on this site and the situation as to SBW was dealt with extensively.
However,  you constantly warn me not to get personal - yet you constantly do just that.   So beware I differ from you, but am not nasty personally.     

The year involved was 2015....Allende never played for the Stormers until 2013, and his best period of rugby was early in the 2015 Super season. And clearly the game you referenced was in 2015.

 I well remember Mike going off about De Allende's performance in that game where he made a couple of runs.Just like Serfontein's stepping of Savea that Saffex raved about, he's done nothing of note since!

 
SBW is getting a little long in the tooth.

The Kiwis speak him up as though he's something extraordinary. Granted he's had a few good games but I'd much rather have a Ma'a Nonu than this over inflated ego.

It was hilarious to see him getting battered in the ring by a man twice his age. He needed to be rescued ... and all the excuses and accusations that followed his pummeling brought a smile to my face.

I was wrong - the match I thought SBW played in was in 2013 - but that year SBW was playing in Japan and only returned to the Chiefs in 2014.   The fact was that the stats for 2013 of De Allende in the match against the Chiefs was as follows:-
de Allende0/000/8/11422311 7/20/000/0

Just as a matter of interest the opponent of De Allende in that game was Ngatai not SBW and that his stats were as follows:-
Ngatai2/0100/7/6131110 11/10/000/0

So let me get this right Mike, you are conceding that Allende didn't humiliate SBW in that game? .. Moolaa you brought a tear to my eye reminding me of the many times Dave would explain how JJ stepped Savea. Oh for those kinder, simpler days.

The French were by far the better team. We all know that. It was out of pity that a handout was given. More than 2 decades of WC failure. One after the other. You guys were first in the rugby WC welfare line.

 I hear Fransie is trying for a rematch with SBW for his final fight...this time in SA, and I think SBW will win again. These fights are a farce...like WWE. It's entertainment and not real boxing.
