Not a good result for Quade he also needs to focus on his rugby. This will only encourage him to continue.

Much better than Flintoff and SBW.

He has a few things he needs to iron out, but looks really good. THis was his first professional fight.

SBW vs Buff... what a joke!

YEs, SBW had him on points, but the last 2 rounds he could barely stand...

Then the ref goes and calls last round in round 10???

If the fight was scheduled for 12 rounds then it should have gone12 rounds surely.

Somebody tell that plonk sbw to forget about the ring. If he cant handle old Botha then he has no chance. At 27 its too late in any case. He can consider himself lucky not to have been knocked out etc. Get out while he is ahead. Ditto Cooper.

Bye the way I hear there is a terrible doping scandal hitting OZ. In fact the nz oaks are also worried as they play a lot of sport with oz. Apparently big crime is invloved and its widespread. Its a huge scandal.

In my opinion SBW should stick to rugby.  Against a real boxer - not 44 years of age - he is going to get one hell of a hiding.   Matter of fact it is not clear whether the fight was really scheduled to be over 12 rounds - if it was then they better call in the police - some really big betting coupes would have been made and crookery could have been expected.  SBW would not have made another two rounds - so my advice again - stick to rugby SBW - boxing will destroy your sporting career.

Wise advice Mike and my thoughts exactly. I suspect sbw knows the truth now and hopefully will realise boxing is not for him. He is a money man though and could be tempted to fight again.

Ex Supersport:

Francois Botha has learnt the hardest lesson in boxing: it’s time to retire.

Sonny Bill Williams beat the veteran on points over ten rounds – 97-91 on two cards and 98-94 – to win the WBA International heavyweight title in Brisbane on Friday.

Williams came desperately close to being knocked out in the final 20 seconds of the bout but he survived after outscoring the South African.

The bout was inexplicably cut from twelve rounds to ten. It probably saved Williams from defeat, and gave Botha reason to claim he had been cheated.

The fight, watched live on SuperSport by a huge audience of rugby and boxing fans, was never meant to be an exhibition of first-class boxing. And it certainly was not. But it created much excitement because of Botha’s track record as a former IBF champion and Williams’s popularity as a World Cup-winning All Black.

Williams, known for his outrageous off-loads in top-class rugby, failed to off-load a knockout punch but put up a commendable performance in only his sixth professional bout.

Both fighters wore black shorts and blue gloves but that was about where the similarities ended. Botha, known as the White Buffalo and fighting in his 61st professional bout, looked in better shape than in many months but Williams was the only one in superb condition.

Williams used his reach advantage well and opened a cut on the bridge of Botha’s nose in the opening round. He finished the second round on top, even though Botha kept talking to him to test his concentration.

Botha’s right eye also showed some damage after the third round and he was unable to take control against the fitter and faster New Zealander even though he scored with some decent blows.

Williams surprised his detractors with his composure and ability to read the fight. Despite his lack of experience and obvious deficiencies on defence, he handled everything that Botha offered.

Botha had a point deducted from his score for hitting after being told to break in the ninth round. Many referees would have disqualified him there and then.

Williams also gave away a point in the final round but stayed on his feet during the hectic final seconds to enhance his status in the fight game.

The 44-year-old Botha’s record now stands at 48 wins, 9 losses, 3 draws and 1 no-contest, with 28 wins coming inside the distance.

The South African had fought the likes of Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Wladimir Klitschko, Evander Holyfield and Michael Moorer, all world champions. He won the IBF heavyweight title when he beat Axel Schulz on points in December 1995.

But that was 17 years ago when he was still a “youngster” of 27. Now he is coming to the end of a good career, if not a great one.

The 27-year-old Williams, who was born in Auckland, New Zealand, is a vastly experienced rugby player but still a novice as a boxer, albeit undefeated after six fights, including three knockouts.

The salient statements are:

Williams came desperately close to being knocked out in the final 20 seconds of the bout but he survived after outscoring the South African.

The bout was inexplicably cut from twelve rounds to ten. It probably saved Williams from defeat, and gave Botha reason to claim he had been cheated. (Are they angling for a rematch?)

Time to hang up the gloves sbw and Botha!

Some responses to the article by boxing buffs who are hoping mad:

Jan Myburgh · Centurion University

what a disgrace to boxing. first they put cooper against a person that cant walk around the block he has 2 terrible fights behind his name. And the SBW was claimed to win the fight , i am a huge Williams fan but seriously he lost the fight by Tko the ref should have stopped the fight but instead he climed in the .middle every time he saw SBW in trouble. I hope Williams proofes to be the sportsman i thought he was and hand in the title. I am not a big fan of Buffalo he is to arogant. BUT WIN DID HE WIN.. Melvine Smith · Bonn, Germany Wow, unbelievable!!! What a disgrace...there should have been a refight called straight away... If the WBA does not look into this and cancel the result of this fight then I dont know...oh man, im so furious right now... Live..Jonathan Snyders · Top Commenter · Lowveld High School Boos drowned out Sonny Bill Williams despite the code-hopper technically claiming the biggest scalp in his fledgling boxing career in Brisbane on Friday night. Former All Black Williams (6-0) somehow emerged a unanimous points winner in his WBA international heavyweight title fight with Francois Botha (48-9) despite appearing to have been trampled by the South African bruiser dubbed "the White Buffalo'. Fox Sports understands that the fight was originally schedued for 12 rounds but was changed to 10 rounds mid-way through the fight. At this stage it is unknown why the length of the fight was changed. Botha, 44, showed all the experience that had led him to world title fights with boxing's who's who including the likes of Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield. Yet despite battering Williams throughout their 10 round bout, Botha suffered the ninth loss in his 60 pro fights - much to the disgust of the packed Brisbane Entertainment Centre crowd. Williams, 27, was almost booed out of the ring after officials somehow awarded the fight to the Sydney Roosters NRL star 97-91, 98-94 and 97-91. Williams had threatened to give up the sport if he was knocked out by Botha. But it appears Williams' boxing options are limited despite somehow emerging triumphant from his "victory'over the hard-hitting Botha. Before the fight I told everyone if this went to judges SBW would win, regardless of what happened in the fight. I never thought they would change the rules to enable this. If I was Botha I would be pissed! And I agree with so many on these comments, this writer either didn't watch the fight and is just copy/pasting or he is a serious SBW fan. Grow up and learn something about the sport before you make stupid comments! Botha is old and should retire! SBW is an average boxer, and with Botha's record, if he cant win this fight he really should retire! All of his fights are what real boxers would label "tune up fights" against a much weaker opponent. I am laughing at all the haters. SBW is a very good rugby who decided to embrace our sport. Instead of welcoming we blame him for all that is bad in this business. I am glad SWB won. I swear I heard the fat lady sing. Marthin Fick · National Operations Manager at ITAGroup They don't agree Afrosaxon Za Hating has nothing to do with what unfolded, Boxing does....and this was a sham, no crying over spilt milk, just the reality of what we all witnessed. Socit CardsNo one is blaming Sonny Bill. The "haters" would like to know why the bout was reduced during the fight and why this article is biased and makes no mention of that. , so SBW threatend to give up if Botha KO him, make sence why they shorten it to 10 round! Booooooooookkkkiiiiieeeeesssss! Jan Oosthuizen · Melville, Gauteng, South Africa Thanks for this! Oi.... did the writer of the article actually watch this fight? It's clear as daylight Francois had a clear plan, let the crazy youngster run around till he's tired and take him apart in the last 3-4 rounds.... And then when SBW and friends realised they'd played exactly into his gameplan? Change the duration of the fight! Supersport I would strongly suggest that if you intend to have any credibility in the sporting world you fire this writer and distance yourself from the drivel he calls sportswriting... It could all be about stimulating interest in a rematch;

Cape Town - Francois "White Buffalo" Botha was left fuming after he lost to Sonny Bill Williams on points in their WBA International heavyweight bout in Brisbane, Australia, on Friday.

Cut short from the original 12 rounds to 10, Williams looked in control for most of the fight.

The South African, however, was furious with officials after the decision was made to shorten the bout, with the 44-year-old looking to have worn out Williams by the end of the 10th.

"You know I love Sonny Bill, I think he's a great guy, a gentleman, but this was bullshit," the 115kg Botha said in an interview after the fight.

"If you look at the crowd, you know who won. You've got to win fair and square, not with the advantage of the judges, you've got to fight. According to me I won, hands-free."

Botha's trainer, Hardy Mileham, was shocked to see the bout shortened - a decision that was seemingly made during the contest.

"The fight was scheduled for 12 rounds, and in round number 10 he (Williams) was in danger," Mileham said.

Despite a strong comeback by Botha in the final stages, with Williams visibly shaken, it was ultimately not enough to sway the judges.

Botha, who did not sit down once between rounds, came out firing in the final round, nearly bringing Williams to his knees with a flurry punches.

Over the first four rounds Williams, 27, had dominated proceedings, while Botha clearly adopted a strategy of outlasting his younger opponent.

The veteran South African taunted Williams throughout the early rounds.

With a number of powerful left-hand jabs, Williams caused Botha's right eye to close up.

Botha said he wanted a rematch against the New Zealand heavyweight champion and All Blacks star.

"A rematch - if he can beat me he can go on, but if he doesn't he should throw in the towel."

The last comment gives it away?

Hi there saSUE I am glad to find an honest bone in you as apparently Botha would have had sbw out for the count in round 11.

Glad really that this didnt happen as long as sbw retires gracefully from the ring. Any attempt by him to fight a decent heavyweight should be shelved immediately.

However saSUE, how come we get such a home town decision and a fight scheduled for 12 rounds reduced to 10. That is the major question here so I hope that honest bone is still functioning if you attempt an answer. This is all very Bryce Lawrence style stuff.

The big fat yarpy pretty much exhausted every dirty trick in the book and then complained at the end of it he was cheated. LMBFAO

At least SBW kept it clean as Kiwis do and i hear he's looking for a rematch in SA where he has more fans than most big fat yarpies have had hot dinners.

Alot of those dirty punches were connecting too! He was lucky the ref called time at the 10th Round otherwise SBW would have knocked him out in the 11th or 12th Round - very lucky escape Botha ;-))

SBW looked great in round 9 and 10. he looked very steady and would most certainly have knocked a groggy Botha out in the 11th.

Don't you think he (SBW) looked like like a daisy after 10 rounds... he really got the better of Botha towards the end.

To be quite frank - an absolute disgrace for Australian sport.   You do not change th number of rounds during the course of the fight - that to my mind is a first timer ever.   Twelve rounds is twelve rounds - come hell or high water.

The sudden change to ten rounds is likely to cause fireworks - it is not whether SBW won or not - it was why the fight was shortened suddenly.    By the end of the eighth round SBW was definitely ahead on points.   He weakened badly and in the ninth and tenth roud he was saved by the bell.   The eleventh and twelve rounds would have been decisive.

The shorterning of the fight could easily have been influenced by betting and doping syndcates who are targetting dodgy sport in Australia.   I would not be surprised if this is not a case of exactly that.   Although SBW was the crowd and New Zealand favourite to win - the big money would have been on Botha winning - so a loss by him would have filled the p[ockets of the crooks.

SBW is an excellent rugby player - he is not a boxers arse.   He will get seriously hurt if he takes on a really good boxer - not an overage and oerweight one like Borha.   The fact is that he coud not hit Botha out in the early rounds showing that his punches do not really carry any real weight and strength.I won't put any mony on a rematch - don;t think SBW would agree t it.

Well said Mike it was a disgrace. I got the impression sbw realises he is no boxer. He knew the shortening of the bout saved him from a knockout. He made no commitment to continue boxing. He got a big fright.

Amazing that a guy 17 year older and carrying too much weight outlasted him and was denied a knockout.

Lets hope the incident is investigated and sbw wises up and quits the ring.
