Schalk Burger to play for Baa Baas

The Barbarians have confirmed that Schalk Burger will join Springbok captain Jean de Villiers in the team to take on Fiji at Twickenham in November.

The World Cup-winning Springbok flank has been sidelined through injury and illness since the start of last year, but it appears he is set to make his return to the international stage in what will be his fourth appearance for the Barbarians.

Burger was hospitalised earlier this year when he contracted bacterial meningitis following surgery to drain a cyst near his spinal chord, and has been slowly working his way back to full fitness.

He will be joined by Bok skipper De Villiers in a team that will be coached by All Blacks boss Steve Hansen.

The world's most famous club confirmed the news in a series of tweets on Wednesday.

That's great news. I don't care the level he kickstarts his career, it's good to see the old bull back on the park.

That is good news.  Few know how ill he really was, nevermind the injury.  That is one tough customer.  Bietjie dom, nê ma always in my team a player that gives the extra bit every game.  we wish him well.

a great player and its good to see him back. Just hope he has put all this injurys behind him.

only thing that is a bit of a worry to me is that JDV is playing this game as well from sa rugby perspective i would rather have him rest a bit as this year he has basicly played non stop as well.

i am more interested from a bok perspective how juan smith is coming along at toulon.

still to me he our next bok captain or at least was captain pedigree. when he plays for the cheetahs he adds that exstra dimension to the team from a player perspective and captainacy wise.

just a pity injury has kept him out for so long
