Schalk given all-clear to Train by Gavin Rich 25 July 2013, 15:55

Springbok and DHL Western Province flank Schalk Burger was delighted on Thursday to learn that he will be able to return to training at the High Performance Centre after a long absence and a difficult year in which in addition to injury, he also suffered serious illness that forced him to be hospitalised for six weeks.

Burger visited a specialist on Wednesday for tests and has been given the green light to return to training immediately, although it is going to take a while still before he can play again.

Burger said in a press release on Thursday that he didn’t want to put a timing on his return to the playing field, but it would appear likely that it will be before the end of the season.

"To give a timeline is quite difficult. I certainly don't want to over-commit,” said Burger.

"The good news is that I can start to train properly and get the heart-rate up. That, in itself, is exciting news and I look forward to increasing my training schedule over the next few weeks with the help of the strength and conditioning team at WP Rugby. We will then reasses things again in a month's time."

Burger, 30, has played 32 games for DHL Western Province and a further 88 matches for the DHL Stormers. He made his provincial debut in 2003 and his Super Rugby debut in 2004.

However he hasn’t played since leading the Stormers in the first match of the 2012 Super Rugby season – in other words, he's been off the field for 18 months.

In that game, against the Hurricanes, he was forced from the field early with a serious knee injury. There were troubles with the diagnosis of the injury and although initially Burger was supposed to return in a matter of months, his comeback date kept on being put back.

While it was the knee injury that kept him out for the duration of 2012, it has been a different story this year.

He was back in training when the Stormers started the build-up to the 2013 Super Rugby season over the summer months, and coach Allister Coetzee was confident enough that he would make a full comeback that he named him as his captain for the season.

However a calf muscle injury ruled him out before the pre-season friendlies and then continued difficulties kept him sidelined.

A cyst was then detected which was pressing on his spine, thus causing the calf discomfort, and it was during an operation to remove the cyst that he contracted bacterial meningitis in late March.

Burger was in a serious condition in a Cape Town hospital ICU over the Easter weekend, and spent the next six weeks in hospital and a further eight indoors.

However he has popped into the High Performance Centre in Bellville a few times and has been spotted around Newlands, and looks to be regaining his health.

With Wednesday’s visit to the specialist bringing the good news that the cyst that was causing the complications has gone, Burger will now be able to throw himself fully into regaining his strength through gym work before targeting a return to field training.

Schalk has had many injuries including breaking his neck.

Although, It was a cyst that allmost finished his career, as he contemplated retirement earlier in the year.

Given that he is only 30, and he has had more than a Mccaw sabatical enforced by injury- he could get back into form and be available for the 2015 WorldCup. He is also 2 years younger than wee old Mccaw.

I think it is mostly just about if his body can take the demands of the game anymore.

Or will he just be injury prone with past leg injuries especially picking up.

Maybe not the solution that Mozart so easily shout about. Burger will take at least another 6 months to get back to a stage where he can start playing serious rugby again and the question will remain - is he going at 31 years of age to get back to where he was a decade or even 5 years ago after virtually playing no rugby for more than two years. The answer is not that simple. Burger is past his prime years as a rugby player and he will have to prove that he should still be considered for test selection - should never be selected on reputation. If he can do that - good luck to him - but I have serious doubts about that at present. The game in fact changed over the last few years and older players become less and less effective and more injury-prone so to say that Burger is a solution to loosie problems is not definite - it has a chance of success - but that chance recedes as he gets older.

great news, good to see ol cheese burger has been given the all clear, after watching McCaw contribute to the ass whipping on the reds, the most important thing for cheese burger is self belief.
IMO 32 is not old and givent that it takes nothing short of being injured before spies isnt playing for the Boks, im sure we havent seen the last of cheese burger in green.

In my recent trip to the Cape with my Brother I spotted Schalk, he was a tall skinny figure and was pretty unrecognisable to brother. It shocked me at how much his body had deteriorated after his illness. I honestly think we won't by seeing Schalk till April next year with him having to get back into shape and such. He has an incredible rugby brain so I would not worry about the technical redevelopment at all, just th physical.

Well truth to tell he has had so many hits.....the knee, the meningitis, the pinched nerve.....incredibly bad luck all stemming from a seemingly innocuous situation. But there's hope. I had meningitis at 24 it wastes your body, but you recover fully.....the weight will return. Frankly I worry more about the knee and the neck. - Assuming that's resolved Schalk could come back. He is not too old and as SB says has missed a lot of wear over the last two S15s. Fans think his long suit was physicality, but as Shezza says, he has a great rugby brain. So often when you see a replay Schalk was in the picture almost attached to the ball......and his linking contributions were very under appreciated. - I rated this guy from the moment he replaced Krige in the 2003 RWC and did what Krige couldn't do....stop Jerry Collins in his tracks.

If he's that skinny I'd be wondering what sort of roids he was on a couple of years ago!

An answer to our loosie problem???

Haaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahaaaaaa!!!

He should rather open up a coffee shop and call it a day.

Just too many good loosies out there at the moment.

Cleancut Come now - be realistic. Burger has time to earn extra pension money overseas while he still can and then take a PR job (maybe on DSTV) afterwards - he is very good in that. Coffee shop is too plebeian in this case.

I dunno, Mike!!!

He always had that Neanderthal look about him.

Must confess I was very surprised the first time I heard him put a sentence together and I could actually understand him.

Now that I think about it … is that a bad reflection on me …. Hmmmmm???

Schalk actually seems like genuinely nice Bloke.....I was walking to the Newlands Cricket ground some years back and Schalk was a little way ahead. There were some police chappies on the pavement. He stopped and chatted to them and pretty soon they were having a good laugh. Quite articulate in his interviews and respected by his fellow players....he has had a bad PR image.

Only teasing, Mozart.

Have heard him speak countless times.

Nothing wrong with the man's intellect.

Also struck me as friendly, nice guy.

I do however think he's past his best as a test player.

Anything is possible I guess. He has however been out of the game for quite some time now and to make a come back is gonna take a lot.
