 Ex Keo

Australian and New Zealand rugby authorities are working behind the scenes to divorce themselves from Super Rugby in 2016 – and form their own Australasian competition.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that South Africa’s insistence on an expansion to accommodate the Lions and Kings is at the heart of the displeasure, with the Aussies and Kiwis believing the competition should not extend 15 teams.

South Africa would then play its own competition with Argentina or possibly look to a competition within Europe.

The SMH reported the possibility of a split as one of three secret proposals being discussed among the SANZAR nations of Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, with input from Argentina.

The SMH added the proposal would take effect when the new broadcasting rights deal ticks over in 2016. SANZAR wants to have a decision agreed by the end of this year to give all parties enough time to plan under the new framework if one is agreed.

All parties are believed to be in favour of working out a solution that includes South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Argentina, but SARU’s domestic political environment is proving the sticking point.

Trsut the SA Politics to muck things up.

But on the other hand if we could join the NH comp ouir palyerss would stay at home and we could leave the kiwis and oz to their own devices and much poorer for our departure.

The day we find an alternative they will be begging us to stay. Interesting times ahead

Time zone wise it would suit SA better to join the NH aswell.

-

Super rugby is already too big as it is (esp with these mid year tours now)

-

As for your tiny little snipe about about us been poorer without SA.... Kinda of a 2 way street init beans4brains? I mean we will miss your refs no doubt lol! Bet the players will love not having to travel to SA all the time.

abnob from all accounts we are the biggest providers of revenue so nz and oz have a lot to lose. From our point of view we need an alternative so as get ensure oz and nz come to their senses and accept we call the shots. So far their little cabal has ruled the roost and made sure via refs and whatever else we get the short straw -the get the jarpie scenario.

They need a reality check and that wont happen to unless we find that alternative.

The European option is to my mind a poor alternative for the following reasons:- It ill stretch out the competition even longer than the present one - which allows for a 23 month break fromm end November to the second last week in February the next year. The players need a shorter playing year not a longer one. The playing conditions in Europe are generally slower and the type of rugby to be played under those conditions would ultimately not benefit our world wide aspirations. You cannot play the same type of game that the players will get accustomed to when playing the AB's and the Wallabies and that would drag us down in world rugby. Our players are already exposed enough to European clubs trying to get the SA p[layers to play for them. If we have to play NH clubs and teams - all I can say - you have seen nothing yet - contracts will rain on any good player they become aware of in local competitions in Europe. I personally think we should forget about a 6th team - we fo not have the player resources for that and why should DA teams always form the bottom teams in the log. Rather think about the idea of a combined team linking the Lions and the Kings together as a competitive unit. That would satisfy all parties. I believe that if the Kings lose the next play-off game - Watson will take that route so as to keep relevant in the competition. Before the final game he will be intractable and demanding - if they lose he would cave in and a reasonabele solution would be found.

Bweeno you yarpies only have yourselves to blame if you think you can dictate the terms of the competition i.e. South Africa won't negotiate on their desire to have a sixth team: in their minds it's a done deal or no deal.

The five teams you've already got have been very average at best so demanding a sixth team is just a joke

. But the ANZACs won't be blackmailed into any thing because you need us more than we need you.

So we;re really gunna miss you fullas or at least those dodgy yarpy refs anyways.

On a similar note good luck to that Mickey Mouse yarpy coach trying to extort $4 million out of Australian cricket.

You guys are dreamers but God loves a tryer.

I can think of numerous pros and cons of both possible directions - its true flying back and forth from SA to Aus to NZ is very taxing on teams and perhaps practicality dictates a change... But saffa competition does bring an extra element to what is S15... @ Beeno I'm not sure that the revenue generated from Saffa conference would actually translate in real terms as the majority of revenue - On the revenue side - with ZAR being about 9:1 AUD - straight away you'd need to generate 900% more to even match Australian revenue on FX alone.... Maybe a scenario is workable with Argentinians IF they can field teams to have enough depth to make competition interesting... Where I see this whole thing coming from is the lack of 2nd tier Rugby comp in Australia - its a very competitive market but easily the most profitable of all the countries - I think the push is to make S15 into a domestic / ANZAC type comp that competes more with NRL and the stiff-necked yarpies sticking to their guns re kings / lions is given the ARU/NZRU the grounds to make changes... Anyway I think comp would be less interesting without the saffa connection but players may appreciate the less travel throughout the season....

This is all nuts. We should go back to the S12, with only one contest between teams. That would reduce the meat grinder by 25  per cent

trust a keo article to be diffferent from everyone elses in SA< NZ and OZ.

but any heading for the limelight, and theres plenty of dumbies to lap it all up and then some, just look at who posted the thread, LMAO, :oD

personally a 16th team wouldnt be too bad and IMO its all smokescreen and what have u, after the introduction of the rebels (which generated another 30 plus NZ rugby players into the australian rugby economy), the battles behind the scene where the ARU and SARU were trying to get another team in became public, so how can there be any doubt that the kings who just missed out would be in pole position for inclusion as a 16th team???? something smells off here, and its not beeno1 aka stormingeds rotten unused brain.

IMO they will add a 16th team from SA and the format will be everyone play everyone once which will mean 15 games being played by every team, instead of the 16 they are playing now. it might not be drastically cut down, but its still a cut back on games played.

what i think they should do is add a team from SA and have a top 8 premireship and a top 8 championship, with relegation and promotional rewards for the top 3 teams. the bottom 3 in the premiership league are relegated the following season, and the top three in the championship are promoted.

all in all, a lot of huff and puff, but SA wont want to part from NZ, as regular competition against NZ aka the No1 undisputed rugby kings of the universe has help keep them strong, but if they choose a different dance partner in the NH, then they will start having records like england whose last two wins against the All Blacks have a 10 gap.

then again,,,
SA spXV
17 years - 3 ttles
Boks TriNats
16 years - 3 titles
Boks RC/4Nats
1 year - 0 titles

after years of getting pwned by NZ, it wouyldnt be the dumbest thing for SA to run with their tail between their legs.

I'm not in favour of a split.

Southern hemisphere rugby as a whole would lose.

Many talented youngster would not be exposed and brought out into the open for us to enjoy.

I see ol susuki is mouthing off his usual nonsense about how important the new zealanders are and how irrelevant we are.

The mere fact that they've been practically handed the trophy every year because of travel constraints doesn't seem to feature much in his post.

Playing the useless ozzies is probably a little better for them. That and the smaller countries dotted around the pacific ocean.

Well if that's what these wankers want then so be it.

Fuck em all!!!!

Typically stupid SA'ns putting a spanner in the works demanding 6 teams - what crap, we don't have enough players for 5 good sides and these ignorant fools want 6 teams. Leave the S15 as a S15, get rid of the stupid conference system and have the sides play eachother as they used to

Disagree - of course we have.

There's more than enough talent in the country to fill 6 teams with relatively good depth.

Get real CC! There aint enough quality players in SA to give you 6 competitive teams. When you stop holding up the foot of the table almost every year, THEN come back and demand a 6th team!

Listen to your countrymen Saffex & Mike mate. They have a realistic view on the situation as opposed to your fantasy!

@ Suscker - the amount of kiwis living in Australia / Melbourne would mean that the All Blacks are really just from another state of Australia - let face reality here... @CC well if Aussies are so hopeless how come bools didn't win on the weekend or in the rigged RWC 2011 quarter final.... haha you fool. @ Saffex - I too would like to see old format return but suspect it wont due to travel related costs - both monetary and physically.

Redsman you stupid overstaying yarpy .

We only have to look at your rugby teams to see Australia has been overrun with Polynesians from over here.Indicating you have now become part of Greater Polynesia..

It's called colonization -sorry to tax your little brain with such a big word.

But you need to start learning the language otherwise we'll have to throw you into the volcano.

Its strange to think the kiwi bird brains actually have come to believe their rugby success is real. They take no account of travel or even far worse their match winning refs.

As to our depth CC is of course totally correct. We could probably support 8 sides if we were not in the business of exporting players. Mooooo la please wake up!

Redsman, who was the was the mastermind behind the Brumbies win last weekend? That's right, a Saffer, so shut your pie hole. Plus Ponies had to rely on poor decision making by Dewald and an off target Morne win, I'm all for the Brumbies having a deserved win but when a Brumbie supporter brags about winning, then that boils my blood.

I'm was stating facts in regards to cc's assertion that Aussie teams can't beat u at rugby.... Jake no doubt good coach but he's what we refer to as a safugee now he's escaped well gladly lay claim because of the absolute idiocy running the scene in SA.... YOUR country's folly my friend...l

A rugby competition without SA and Kiwi teams playing is sub-par as a marketing product and as a fan it  also makes no sense. These business men are just negotiating & playing hard ball.

Even if they are stupid enough to join the NH teams in a comp they have to know that they need the traditional SA v Kiwi wars. IMO it’s just a lot of posturing to get advantage in the politics of rugby but unfortunately this is a reality and it can negatively impact on the game.

IMO one thing they have to fix is the fact that players are playing too many games!

Warm welcome to the board Just.

Its a pleasant surprise to hear a kiwi talking sense. Certainly there is a lot of posturing and hence my urging SARFU to find an alternative. We need to put oz and nz firmly in their place and make them realise we are the guys earning the bucks for them and we call the shots - ie the tail must cease to wag the dog.

a SA departure It would mean the Super 15 would become sub par and there would be a decline in quality and interest. However it would be fun to see Oz and nz refs trying their darndest to crook each other out and not us. That would be priceless.

Half the problem re player fatigue is the dumb coaches are not learning that playing dod tired players is detrimental to their cause.

@beeno1: thanks for the welcome mate!

IMO SA rugby has to realise that as great as they are as a rugby nation they need NZ & maybe even Oz - perhaps that is a stretch though, lol. The old saying is "you are only as good as your competion" so even if SA has the crowds and the revenue their game will deterioate & crowds will get smaller if the games are not competitive. That's why SA needs NZ.

Hasbeeno, 8 teams?? What a dreamer! SA's lack of rugby depth is now legendary!

Regular thrashings by club teams on EOYTs is testament to that! Look at the Stormers and Sharks as further evidence....a few injuries and they were both rubbish! Unlike my Mighty Chiefs who instead of whining after being decimated by injuries, just got on with it and are now in the Final!

You have still to explain if there is so much depth in SA, why are you always propping up the foot of the log?

PS. Overseas poaching, politics and referees can not be used as pathetic excuses!

I'm waiting Hasbeeno!

Mooooo la you have clearly not been paying too much attention to the posts made. The names of the various Sa players overeseas have been mentioned. You could probably field two teams of international class from them alone.

Perhaps that mine of information Spoony could do the research here.

Then we do not have a central contracting system here where player allocation can be rationalised. The bulle for example buy players they dont even use.

Look the simple facts are we had 4 of the top 8 super 15 teams. I have no doubt but for injuries we would have had 3 of the top 5 or 6.

The simple facts staring you in the face mooooo la is that South African is the powerhouse of world rugby!

If ever we get our house in order and get rid of bent nz refs its all over for nz as I am sure deep down you fully realise. Best you enjoy this period in the sun as it wont last.

Less is more and that's why I want the super 12 back. Only the best teams should compete. The whole new format stinks. I would really like to see the week teams out of the comp. lions, kings, highlanders, rebels, force should all be kicked out. Split the conference out of the league phase and let teams qualify for the super 12. I would even go as far as having a super 10

Some more deas are coming out on this. Ex Keo:

South Africa, Argentina and France should be the South African Rugby Union’s Tri Nations of choice.

The SANZAR alliance between New Zealand, Australia and south Africa has never worked for South Africa. The biggest beneficiary has been Australia.

Let the love affair between New Zealand and Australia prosper with the addition of the Pacific Islands and Japan.

Leave any interaction with Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the Pacific Islands, to Test rugby. It will also add to the seduction of Test rugby between South Africa and these blokes if the only time we see them in South Africa is because of Test rugby.

From a regional and provincial perspective the liaison that South Africa should be working is that between France’s top four teams, South Africa’s six regions and two sides from Argentina. That’s the way back to a Super 12 competition that pits strength against strength, has no prejudice when it comes to travel and time zones aren’t an issue. Alternatively a Super 14 with six SA, six French and two Argentinean sides. The detail can be refined. The principle doesn’t need refining.

South Africa has always been at a disadvantage in Super Rugby. Our teams travel for a month, whereas the most a New Zealand or Australian side travels is three weeks. Occasionally they’ve done the month trip – and then we’ve never heard the end of it.

There were years when South African teams played five matches in succession in Australia and New Zealand. It was rugby suicide.

The play-offs have also historically been a disaster because invariably a team has had to travel 12 000 miles to play the final just a week after playing a semi-final.

Our rugby will also be improved with regular contact between France. I’d leave England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland out of the equation, and this way the Heineken Cup retains its European exclusivity and you give the French club owners, in particular, something greater than just a domestic title challenge.

Argentinean domestic rugby would also be the beneficiary.

A competition of this nature logistically is possible.

Super Rugby was never ideal for South Africa’s players. Our game has always needed to look more north than south.

We’ve seen enough of the Aussies and Kiwis on a regional basis. Let’s get the French and Argie connection going and let’s get the tradition of strength back in our Currie Cup.

What think the pundits - please no knee jerk anti keo comments. Concentrate on the suggestion oaks. Can t see how there are no time zone problems with Argentina?

Perhaps we need a test comp with SA, Argentina, France, England Ireland and Wales a new 6 nations - imagine the appeal - imagine the pouds earned enabling us to retain our players - and ditto to any super NH comp!!).

Sorry scots you dont quite cut it in this elite company. You and Italy can join up with Russia, Romania, Canada USA etc. We will of course miss the renditions of flower of Scotland - Scotlands major cutural achievement over many centuries - and one oak I know living under  a bridge in Scotland would be totally dismayed but I trust it will not effect his health - please note windpomp!

Its time to rationalise things.

Also imagine not having to deal witth bent down under refs!!!

Rugby administrators I am here to assist and consultations will be free - for the good of the game!
