Serfontein in for Steyn; Rugby 365

Jan Serfontein will make his first start for the Springboks as he replaces Frans Steyn, who has removed himself from national selection. Gurthrö Steenkamp, will make his 50th Test appearance for the Springboks when they take on Wales in Durban on Saturday,as he replaces Tendai Mtawarira in the starting line-up. Steenkamp is one of six changes to the match-day squad from the team which comprehensively beat the World XV last weekend in Cape Town, four of which are positional shifts. Cornal Hendricks, who shone for the Springboks last weekend at Newlands, will make his Test debut on Saturday, while his provincial teammate from the Free State Cheetahs, the uncapped Lodewyk  de Jager, has been selected on the bench. The two changes in the backline are at inside centre, where Jan Serfontein comes in, and scrumhalf Fourie du Preez starts with Ruan Pienaar on the bench. “I planned on giving Jan [Serfontein] an opportunity this month," said coach Heyneke Meyer. "He was first selected when he was 20 last year and it’s always been our plan to groom him for a long Springbok career.  "He’s been playing well for the Bulls lately and his first start for the Springboks is well-deserved after making nine appearances from the bench in 2013. “Jan [Serfontein] and JP Pietersen will face a very experienced midfield combination on Saturday, but they have played against the best in Super Rugby and know what is expected of them.” The 32-year-old Steenkamp, who made his international debut on 27 November 2004 against Scotland in Edinburgh, will become the 29th Springbok to reach 50 Test caps. He will also become the sixth prop to achieve this feat behind Os du Randt, CJ van der Linde, Ollie le Roux, Jannie du Plessis and Mtawarira. “This is a wonderful achievement for Gurthrö and I’m very proud of him,” added Meyer. “He has been playing Test rugby for a decade and is vastly experienced at all levels of the game. "Gurthrö always gives everything he has for the Springbok jersey and it’s always good to see commitment and hard work pay off.” Meyer was also very happy for Hendricks and De Jager, who have been two of the Cheetahs’ stars this season. “To make one’s Test debut is a proud moment in any player’s career," said Meyer "Cornal and Lodewyk  fully deserve to be in the squad this weekend and I know they will do well." “Cornal performed exceptionally well in his first start for South Africa against the World XV last weekend and really made the most of his opportunity. “Lodewyk  has everything expected from a modern lock - not only is he big and powerful, but he likes the physical stuff and is very skilful as well." Meyer said he is expecting a stern challenge from Wales on Saturday. “They started their tour well with a good win in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday and they are always fired up and ready,” said the Springbok coach. “Wales have an experienced coaching team and they were the Six Nations champions in 2012 and 2013, as well as the back-bone of the British & Irish Lions team which beat Australia last year, so this will be a massive challenge in our first Test of the season. “Although we got our season off to a good start against the World XV last weekend, there were a few areas of the game we were not satisfied with and which we worked hard on this week. "We will have to be at our best on Saturday and we want to make our supporters proud.” Victor Matfield, who will captain the Springboks for the 18th time in a Test, will equal John Smit’s South African record of 111 Tests in the Green and Gold. Four players who are part of the squad were not considered for selection because of illness and injury. Serfontein tiny at 97kg??????  

A slow 97kgs. The inside step, the tackle, the turnover....the Welsh plan.  

 Faster than Frans Steyn. Judging by what you say about the inside step immediately shows me you know very little about rugby.

You deduce all that from " the inside step" ....wow.  

The outside breaks have already been evidenced and he is certainly far quicker than Jean or Frans  

 It is Serfontein's big chance. He had a good season last year for the Bulls, and when he did play for the boks at the start of the season against the minows he was good as well. 
Maybe the bad form of JJ in 2014 has rubbed off onto him, and with JJ the Janitor now hanging of the toilet, maybe this is Serfontein's chance to shine,

Serfontein is a Wynand redo. No faster, not as strong, same weapons.

 
Meyer has seriously screwed this kid over.

He should have trusted Serfontein with a lot more game time.

I seriously doubt he's played an entire half with all his caps put together.

And once again you are showing how stupid you are. Serfontein has played every Bools game and is still bog ordinary. What was HM supposed to do, drop his captain and one of the World's best centres for a kid who can't stand out in the S15?

 Jan serfontain is shown as 98 kg on the Sharks website and growing. Wynand is 93kg these days.Jan is bigger, stronger and at least as quick. He is very strong, has a good rugby brain, Can send out a very nice pass and his defence is good. A very good young player coming up who has markedly improved this year. 
As Meyer has rightly said he has a massive challenge in front of him. To hold the 110kg Roberts for 80 minutes is extremely challenging. I believe we need a mobile hard tackling loosie like Burger starting. Meyer has missed a point here?
All the very best Jan I believe you have the guts and determination to do well. 

 I also hope we get rid of notions of playing wee de Jongh and the like at test level. The guys are just too big, strong and fast.
I hope Aliistair Coetzee takes note of the size of the W elsh backs and indeed of what we face in the Super 15. Little guys belong at scrumhalf and not much place else.
