The South African Rugby Union has confirmed that Rohan Janse van Rensburg will replace his Blue Bulls team mate Jan Serfontein in the South Africa Under-20 squad for the Junior World Championship (JWC).

Serfontein, the IRB Junior Player of the Year in 2012 and standout player of last year’s JWC tournament, is currently a member of the Springbok training group, which have just completed a training camp in Durban.

Janse van Rensburg represented the South African Schools last year and also attended the South Africa Under-20s’ previous training camp two weeks ago as a reserve player.

The Junior Springboks travel on Thursday to France where they will defend their JWC title.

The JWC tournament will be held from June 5 to 23 across three venues in France.

Meanwhile, the Junior Springboks wrapped up their on-field preparations with two training sessions on Tuesday in Stellenbosch.

The morning field session was followed by a contact session in the afternoon against the SA President’s XV, who will be in action on Saturday in Stellenbosch against Namibia.

Shezza

Thanks for the info.  Jansevan Rensburg is very good and he and Dries Swanepoel will be a top class center combination.

That also clears up the issue of Serfontein playing for the Springboks in June.   I think the center combination would be De Villiers and Serfontein - but I have a feeling that Serfontein would play at 13 and De Villiers at 12 - since De Villiers has much more experience and may be required to mentor Serfontein a lot.

I don't have a clue who Meyer will pick for center, but I would like to start Jean and JJ then replace De Villiers with Serfontein giving Strauss the Captianship.

I think Jean will start at 13 given that Heyneke will want to rest him a bit. He has started almost every game for the Stormers if im not mistaken. Interesting thoughts Shezza on taking him off near the end, wouldnt you think that to be bit risky having two rookies in the midfield?

It's a risk, but it's worth taking as this is the best chance this year for them to get some game time, plus the game would've taken shape and the direction at which it's going would be mostly predictable.

sauskes sharingan sees all, im sure some will rememeber my call on serfontein not even playing for the u20s this year, but thats irrelevant, whats not is NZs chances of winning the u20 have gone up big time, SA wont have a player to match jason emery whose been in good form for the highlanders and then theres ardie savea, very pleased with this bit of news, :o)

anyone who thinks that JDV wont be starting is errrrrrrrrrrrrrr how do i say this without being saffex harsh??? not too smart, LMAO, :oP
JDV will definately be starting the question is where??? IMO it will be in 13 as serfonteins natural game seems to be at 12 and meyer would be wise to keep him where hes most comfortable.
i can also see ff englebrecht starting too, but on the wing, during the phase plays, im sure there will be plenty of time for jan and jj to link up and pull of some bulls like moves.

Wrong about the JWC - Serfontein is top class I agree - but Janse van Rensburg scored two tries in an UWC game against Namibia - won by the Juniors by 42 -12   The Junior AB's will run into a brick wall again. LOL

@mikey,

two tries against nambia??? o_O
reminds me of that old pop song, "that dont impress me much", LMAO, :oD

emerys better then van rensberg, but serfofntein was better then emery, so now the midfield advantage is with NZ, :o)

BTW, jr All Blacks is an incorrect reference to the NZ u20s team, jr All blacks is effectively NZs A team, the equivilent of SAs emerging boks, :o)

Interesting to see that Ardie Savea is in the Under 20 WC team of New Zealand  -  he could make a difference to the team.   From what i have seen in the games Emery played in this year - sorry he does not impress me at all.   I am following the progress of Van Rensburg with interest - he is only 18 years old and I am sure he is going to be very strong in the competition coming up next week.

Looking at the squad - I give New Zealand about a 30% chance of winning the trophy - but may be wrong on the issue.

Sorry about my nasty comments - after the eyes tested reference I thought you were sarcastic and was trying to put me in a bad light.  Sincerely apologize for that one.

Ah Sasuke, I trust you've not forgotten about Dries Swanepoel? Serfontein a center partner back in Grey college? Apparently he's regarded as on par with Jan!
