Reecw-Edwards and Bashford has also been sacked by the Sharks - so the race must be on to find assistant coaches for the team. The question now is - who of the players will be get rid of or will depart because of player insecurity, factions and other negative elements. The situation is so fluid that we can bargain on the following situation to apply:- * Backs Aside from JP Pietersen - who will not play for the Springboks or in the CC competition over the next two years - Van der Linde and Bosman has already announced their departure. Other players may want to get away from the faction ridden team as well. Those could include some real surprises - but it will obviously depend on whose contracts are ending and which players are not wanted by Smit and Venter. The latter could be a problem since the backline performance of the Sharks this year was atrocious. It may also depend on which team wins the play-off games between the Kings and the Lions. Whomsoever wins will hunt heavily for Sharks players and they will find a willing market since like in any place of employment - insecurity is a vital factor in players own determination of their future. There may be some surprising lossess of players and we need to watch the situation to see what Smit and venter will do and whether they would be able to put together a succession plan for players. What is evident is that most SA players will not be easily persuaded that they will have a good future with the Sharks and they will have to pay a heavy price to attract top players to the franchise The player they should sent farming is Francois Steyn - who is part and parcel of the faction problem - but that would not happen. So the future of some other players would be bleak especially if they are not in the Steyn faction. Forwards One of the players already departing is Marais. It is reported that Pieter-Steph Du Toit wants to leave and the Du Plessis brothers would likely also leave. Daniel is another probable leaver. The latter was already benched last Saturday - likely because of his comments last week about the Plumtree issue. It must be borne in mind that in the event of the Lions winning the play-offs - Van der Merwe will depart as well. In the event of any of the Kings or Lions losing - especially the Kings - it is possible that a combined Kings-Lions team will be fielded in next years Super 15 and the drawing of players from the Sharks will be enhanced. That could have serious detrimental impact on the low-confidence Sharks and other departures can be expected. The Sharks have a lot of re-building to do and I as a Shark supporter is not really confident that it would succeed. I think they are in for a hard time in the CC this year - as well as next years Super 15. It would be a miracle if they can reach number 10 on the Super 15 log next year.

@mikey,

i thought jp pietersons japanese contract was something similar to what kankowski had this year, where he will play both super rugby and top league???

i heard that du toit was a top priority signing for the sharks, and they would be stupid if the lost bizzy, but his brothers a differnt story though.

if the sharks board do go after players though then that will be a good thing IMO, a change on every level does a lot to squash the arguments that some of the choices were of a personal nature instead of a professional one which is what its starting to look like.

still think the sharks are poo though, could have beaten the bulls but dropped the ball big time, hopefully rooys favourite team the stormers can do better for the chiefs sake, :o)

I said it before, we should not judge John on what we "think" he is doing, let us wait a season and see if he has a plan.  a Boer mos makes a plan and all doesn't he?

 CM - I don't foresee the Sharks having an issue recruiting or retaining players. Smit and Venter are both respected and well connected, even by those players whose feelings have been hurt during the transition mess. Keegan Daniel does seem to be finished though

 

Sasu - I am in two minds this weekend with the Bulls / Stormers game. Want my Stormers to win and finish a respectable 7th (much better than many doomsdayers on here projected) but also would love to see the Bulls have home field advantage. May the best team win - as long as they don't beat each other up too bad ! Really hope a Crusaders / Bulls final at Loftus materializes

 

Kalaed - you are right in that time is the ultimate judge. To make determinations at this point about John's leadership and direction is premature.

Clever Mike, you really should check all the facts before you post.

 Lets start with the coaches. The Bulls U19 coach has already been appointed to act as assistant together with Sean Everitt, to Brad Mcloed Henderson, all under the guidance of Brendan Venter. The issue of head coach for next years Super 15 will be decided at a later stage.

The departure of Viljoen, Bosman and possible Ludick has been know for some time now. Even before the departure of Plumtree was announced. All three are at the end of their contracts and are now heading for well paid pensions overseas. Just as many other players have done.

JP, Kanko and Beast have all signed new contracts. The Du Plessis brothers have been offered massive contracts overseas and the Sharks, in conjunction with SARU, are trying to figure a way to keep them.

Daniel being dropped as a result of the Plumtree issue? That is almost the biggest load of nonsense I've heard in a while. It was all part of a very clever game plan whereby the Sharks wanted to put the heaviest pack possible on the park to grind the Bulls down and then let Daniel loose when the Bulls pack were tired. And its a game plan that worked. If not for the poor kicking, the Sharks would have won quite handsomely.

Your comments on Frans Steyn being a divisive factor are almost libellous and are so far from the truth, its ridiculous. Try get your information form those who are actually in the know. If you ever bump into young Pat Lambie, ask him what effect Frans Steyn has on the team. You might get a pleasant surprise (or nasty as its obvious you despise the man for whatever reason)

Sasue I think that the case with the Du Plessis brothers is they stick like glue to each other - if the one leave for France - the other one will leave as well. Du Toit is a problem case - he apparently has offers from the Stormers and the Bulls as well - and they involve millions. He will take the highest offer - with a chance to get back to Cape Town being an added attraction. Will the Sharks be able to convince him to stay - I am not sure of that one.

mance First of all - I have nothing against Francois Steyn as a person - what I do not like is his performances on the field of play. It bothers me too that there were no factions in the Sharks team last year - and it suddenly became a major problem this year Why was that? Don't tell me that it was because of the few Lions players Plumtree brought in. There were at most two of them playing in any given game. That could not have had such a massive detrimental affect on the team as a whole and cause major factions to develop. I do not know why these factions developed otherwise. It could have turned out because Plumtree according to Steyn treated him badly - or it could have been because of Daniel's captaincy. Something tells me it was the latter that cause the problem and led to a leakage to Beeld about the issue of Daniel and the Afrikaans-speaking players. Whatever it was - it was ugly to say the least. I heard rumours that Steyn was part of the faction problem - but tumours are also ugly things and could be started by malcontents. I do not now what role Steyn plays in all of this - but I do assume he does have at least some impact on that situation. Insofar as Lambie is concerned - I do no know Lambie personally - but I do believe that he is a person with very high moral standards and he is an absolute gentleman. I do not think he would ever speak ill of anybody and admire him very much for that as well. As a Sharks supporter I hope that things turns out well for the Sharks - so lets wait and see what happens.

Thanks for the thread - it as very pertinent at the time and signs were not good.  Some things I foresaw could happen did not materialise - and that was very fortunate for the Sharks.

 

What I do not like is there were already three threads on the issue opened and you now opened a forth one - one of many discussions on the Sharks at the time.  In one you were totally embarrassing yourself with ignorance about the injury to Du Toit and the processes as to injury of players and the impact the team doctors have with regard to the issue.

 

What I do know is that a freely expressed my opinions on issues on this Board - and if I am wrong I accept that as well.   I do not invent rubbish like you do about players you like and embarrass myself by criticizing players for inventions in my imagination - like you do. 

 

Why don't you bring up what you wrote about Kruger and Du Toit earlier in the year - so we can see how absolute idiotic you are most of the time .   That goes for virtually all players you write up and all players you criticize.
