Coach JP Pietersen couldn't stop singing praises for Andre Esterhuizen and Ethan Hooker after the Sharks clinched a nail-biting 28-23 victory over Saracens in the Investec Champions Cup at Kings Park. This dynamic duo turned the midfield into their playground, with Captain Esterhuizen celebrating his 100th cap for the Sharks in style, and Hooker proving just as pivotal at the center position.

Pietersen, who recently stepped in for John Plumtree, was in awe of his players' synergy. “They complement each other really well, defensively and on attack,” he noted. He even joked,

“It feels like we’ve got 10 forwards on the field.”

Pietersen expressed full confidence in Hooker’s versatility, stating, “Ethan is a centre – the wing is just an option. From my side, I’m very comfortable with him there.”

The coach also highlighted Esterhuizen's leadership qualities during a landmark game. “I remember Andre’s debut – I was there when he came on the wing in New Zealand against the Hurricanes in 2014, and we played a lot of games together. He’s grown so much. He’s become a proper all-round player – they call him the hybrid now.” Pietersen proudly shared,

“I’m really proud of him. The way he leads, the way he talks, his decision-making on the field – I don’t need to step in much, which tells you he’s a natural leader.”

The Sharks recovered from a heavy defeat last weekend to Toulouse, securing a bonus-point win that keeps their playoff hopes alive. With critical matches against Sale Sharks and Clermont on the horizon, Pietersen remarked on the sport's unpredictable nature, admitting the team's performance wasn't flawless with losses in scrum penalties and aerial battles.

Looking ahead, the Sharks face a critical South African derby against the Bulls in Durban. “Winning is always important,” Pietersen reflected. “It gives you belief, something to build on, motivation and confidence going into the next game. We know the Bulls won’t be easy – they’re desperate as well – but what a challenge it’s going to be next week.”

The team now shifts its focus back to the Vodacom URC, where they are currently ranked 14th after a rocky start to the season. With the Bulls up next, the Sharks are gearing up for what promises to be a riveting showdown.
