In a move that has left former All Blacks scratching their heads, Du’Plessis Kirifi has been conspicuously left out of Dave Rennie's inaugural squad selection despite a stellar season with the Hurricanes. The decision came as a shock especially after Kirifi's commanding performance in the Super Rugby Pacific final, where his team demolished the Chiefs 60-5.
On Sky Sport NZ’s The Breakdown, ex-All Black James Parsons voiced his disbelief. "There’s no way he could have played any better, statistically or visually. It’s the best season he’s had and I think his leadership has been exceptional as well," remarked Parsons, highlighting the 28-year-old’s standout season. The exclusion seems even more puzzling considering the form he displayed, leading many to speculate about the reasons behind the snub.
"To me, it says Ardie will be at seven [openside flank] and there’s no intention of subbing him off. That’s 80 minutes."
Parsons pointed out that Ardie Savea's captaincy likely solidified his role, leaving little room for Kirifi. The squad's structure favors versatility, particularly in the six and eight positions, with players like Anton Segner who can also step into the seven role if needed. Dave Rennie himself has noted Segner as a viable openside option, further crowding the competition for that spot.
Jeff Wilson, another former All Black, chimed in, emphasizing the non-specialist nature of the bench roles in modern rugby. "That role off the bench has never really been a specialist position," Wilson explained. "You’ve always wanted someone who can cover. Luke Jacobson, for example, can play across the loose trio." Despite his disappointment for Kirifi, Wilson remains optimistic about his future in the national team setup. "Everyone knows I’m a fan of the way Du’Plessis Kirifi leads and plays. I’ve got no doubt he’ll be part of that trip to South Africa," he assured.
Rennie, who personally delivered the news to Kirifi, has hinted at additional player inclusions for the upcoming South Africa tour, potentially opening a backdoor for Kirifi's late entry into the All Black fold. This revelation keeps hope alive for the Hurricanes captain, whose recent performances have undoubtedly made a case for his inclusion.
As the All Blacks prepare for their tour, the composition of the team continues to be a topic of heated discussion, with Kirifi's omission at the forefront. Only time will tell if this decision will impact the team’s dynamics and performance on the international stage.
