I'm having serious doubts about Heineken Meyer, sorry manne. But, and it's a big contentious but... There's so much I don't understand. We're building for World Cup 2015 right? Yes, do we need our best players on the pitch yes? Do we need our best game(proven and planed) yes.. Well explain all the dark areas please.. I think it's obvious our best no.9 is du preez. Hy pas net die nuwe, quick quality ball game wat ons 'nou' soek of smag. As hy nie is nie en ons bou vir wereld beker, then why has he been playing in the build up to this World Cup. He needs to get in the team and stay there until there's a better replacement. We want quick ball, he gets it but he gives it with quality and intelligence. Match fit players and crazy selections.. I'm all for captain deviliers. But same as eben, it's his 1st game back after injury at this level. Ease them into it. If deviliers played full 80 like he did and picked up an injury I'd've only blamed one person. Janie du plisis. Sorry, hy is yster en was n do ring vir SA rugby but he's turning into john smith. Too slow, not enough power and all mouth. And it hurts me to say it but it's the truth. Jacques potgieter has to be in our squad. Strength, endurance and quality. I know Heineken gave him starts and we have a lot of choice there but from 4-8 the game tone is set and a lot of times won. I accept trying with handre in no.10 and I do think dialendi has got a place in the squad but I think the differences with sa and Frans steyne needs sorting out. A player that if your serious about a World Cup you need to be serious about. Including. Gameplay today made me seriously doubt Meyer. Just watching the team make decisions in line outs. Stumbling and second guessing. I'm sorry but that's management. Yes the weather was bad but if I ever have to watch my country where I was brought up in best line out and scrummage technicians in the world fall apart and so indecisive again, I'd die of embarrassment, like I nearly did today. They should be galvanised and know the score. Sorry but you do not see the other top teams do this. And I believe it's management. You could see at times where they've been told to kick by management and they should run and the otherway round... There are loads more bits that I will add on if this thread stays on but I'm worried about the near future for sa rugby because I don't see a clear plan emerging. It did until end of last year but all that thought and preparation seems to have stopped there and it's like we're lacking game plan or team planning. Feel free to tell me I'm wrong because you might know more reasons for some of these why questions I have. Again. There's loads more. But there is good too. Unfortunately, after the line out and scrummage embarrassment I just had to watch I don't really feel inspired to talk about them
Shoot me if you will...
Welcome to the site. I was grossly unhappy with some performances today. The worst players were by some distance the following:-
Cornal HendricksMorne SteynRuan PienaarBakkies BothaJannie du Plessis
Hendricks made some defensive errors and has a problem under high balls - produced nothing in attack
Morne did his damnedest to try and give the Argentinians a victory
Ruan Pienaar donkey-kicked aimless kicks continuously
Bakkies Botha did bugger-all the whole time he was on the field of play
Jannie was a scrumming disaster.
Some playersw like De Villiers and Etzebeth was undercooked and clearly needed more game time.
I call Morne Streyn the Stade Francais Reject - he is normally their bench fflyhalf. Looking at his game today one can clearly see why he is not the Club starting flyhalf.
Jusst one other thing. There is no worse a backline player - center or flyhalf - than Grans Steyn. If you really want to jeopardize the whole backline - pick him as a flyhalf or center. I can write books about that one - but he was the poorest defending Center in Super 16 and the only 12 who made only one line break in all the games he played in. All the other frontline centers scored tries - Fransie never came anywhere near to scoring one.
The Sharks backline was malfunctioning the whole year - now that Fransi is not there to bugger things up in the CC - the backline is doing very well.
Mike and Bendt,
I was a Goosen supporter (maybe I am still) but lost my confidence in him after his return from injury. So, I reverted back to Morne who I always rated as pretty ordinary, but reliable when the going gets tough and the outcome hinged on kicking. Fast forward to the appearance of Pollard and I immediately felt here is a youngster that could turn into a kingpin for the Bokke. Well, today was his "vuurdoop" and everyone could see he is as nervous as hell. The conditions and the fact that his forwards were retreating in the scrums meant that he received most of the passes from a defensive position and that must have been a nightmare to him. No surprise Meyer was forced as early as halftime to fall back on his tried and tested Morne.
Our loosies were OKish, except I would have selected Juan Smith to the bench to cover for conditions like today.
The rest of the forwards were poor.
Beast is pass his sell by date. Jannie stood his ground in a few scrums but never dominated. Bismarck was good in the scrum, but horrible with his throwins in the lineouts. He was the prime reason why we lost so many of our own balls. The situation improved immediately when Strauss replaced him. Some of Strauss balls went even to the back of the line out where he found Vermeulen with pinpoint accuracy. It seems to me that Victor and Eben should be our lock combo for the immediate future with Lood on the bench. Bakkies is history.
