it would be very nice if the Booools were to get their act together. Ce rudunce windpomp deserves better or does he?

Now we all should know wee matfiled was the pappest "lock' ever to play for the Boks. A show pony with zero grunt who moonlighted in the backline and avoided the physical stuff like the plague. That said, wee victor was a consummate con man managing even to fool the usually astute Dr Moz or in this case Dr Mozzzzzzzzzzzzzz. That is because for all his many faults wee matfiled is a fairly astute oak. Yes he may prove to be a capable coach. Being the arch schiver he should also be able very quickly to identify those players not putting in the effort!

Cape Town – (Pap) Lock legend Victor Matfield, in the absence of a healthy list of specialist candidates, stubbornly continues to be linked to the vacant Bulls head coaching post in Super Rugby.

The 2019 season in that competition opens at home for the Pretoria-based franchise against arch-rivals the Stormers on February 16 – now well less than four months away.

The Bull administration, still grappling with the matter of who should succeed New Zealander John Mitchell, desires putting in place a coach who “understands the Loftus culture”.

It is known – at least partly for that reason -- that a still significant faction in the corridors of power there had held out some hope of coaxing Heyneke Meyer back for a crack at reliving the glory days for the Bulls.

But Meyer, Springbok head coach between 2012 and 2015, is currently committed to his new head-of-rugby gig with Stade Francais, an outfit seemingly on the ascent again – they lie second in the Top 14 after occupying the nether regions last season.

Under his patient, conscientious guidance, and despite initial traumas, the Bulls rose to become maiden Super Rugby title-winners in 2007, creating a platform that also saw them push on to further successes in 2009 and 2010 under Frans Ludeke, now with Kubota Spears in Japan.

But recent seasons have seen the Bulls generally among the also-rans in the SANZAAR competition.

If the argument that you should buy shares when they are “down” applies at Loftus, then whoever takes the job for 2019 really has little to lose, and we did see signs of some meaningful, exciting young talent coming to the fore in Saturday’s Currie Cup semi-final, where the heavy-underdog Blue Bulls (coached by Pote Human, who has on-and-off associations with Loftus stretching back to 2005) came within a very whisker of humbling Western Province at Newlands.

Despite the very public suggestion by seldom quiet RWC 2007-winning Bok coach Jake White that it is too early for Matfield – and his possible lieutenant and fellow playing genius Fourie du Preez – to coach at Super Rugby level, the lanky second-rower and television pundit has already retorted (perhaps only adding ammunition to the theory that he is genuinely keen?) that prominent ex-players like Rassie Erasmus and cricketer Mark Boucher have taken to the task swiftly and well.

Indeed, there are certain, unmistakable shades of the current Bok coach, Erasmus, in the “scientific” zest and diligence of research Matfield clearly possesses: it has been evident in some of his SuperSport punditry, where he often enough makes points backed up by technological data and indicative of promising levels of own grey matter.

The 41-year-old also strikes this writer as an astute selector, based on his studio observations on chat shows or in live presentations of major matches.

Picking players soundly, after all, is a key function of any credible head coach, while it is stating the obvious that he is a dedicated and canny dissector of lineout strategies and enemy coding in that far from unimportant specialist area of play – it extends into mauling, both from an attack and defence perspective, and the like.

He has also cut his teeth usefully already in back-up coaching capacities at both Loftus and down the highway with the Lions in Johannesburg.

Matfield, whose playing times at Loftus spanned an enormous 14 years – albeit with some interruptions – is also suitably world-wise, when you consider his pro tenures with both Toulon in France and Northampton in England, and the ability, all the while, to observe what makes different off-field masterminds tick and how they command (or don’t, in some cases) the dressing room.

Possessing what seems a fairly demure, less than ego-bedevilled personality, he would also be the likely beneficiary of reasonable patience from the Bulls faithful, given the esteem in which he is held as one of the ground’s all-time favourite playing sons.

Apart from boasting more than a handful of winner’s medals with the franchise – three Super Rugby titles, three Currie Cups – his overall contribution to rugby in the region was recognised in 2008 with his induction to the University of Pretoria’s hall of fame.

Put it this way: unless a heavyweight, alternative CV suddenly lands at Loftus from an established, top-notch coaching figure, there would be infinitely more crackpot things to do than give Victor Matfield a daring – yet also highly intriguing -- stab at the post …

Contrary to what my good friend would have you believe, the last time Matfield was involved with coaching the Bulls they won the SA Conference. But then again, he also firmly believe that HM was fired.

Vlagman, I don't want to discredit Matfield, but I think Pote did some good things in some short time. He might be worth a better chance? I would give it to him ahead of most of the other lot.

I am not sure what Dunce is about - Meyer was very keen to have his contract extended,   However, he became aware of the fact that there was zero chance of a contract renewal and then decided to declare he is not interested in having his contract extended to save face and legally is meaningless.
Contractually it means that until the contract ran out was in the employ of SARU.   Non-renewal of contracts of employment can be regarded as being the nearest thing to discharge of permanent staff members
However, Dunce is wrong again. Matfield had a three year contract starting in 2014 through to 2016 with the Bulls.   Apart from his coaching role he was a disastrous player for the Bulls team.  The problem was he was attack coach and the fact is that despite Matfield's free-lancing as a center, the backline was under-used and seen on the whole his coaching was on par with his performance as a player.
There are indications that Matfield will benefit from Beeno's advice above,   He knows very much from own self what unfitnessand other negatives looks like in other players.
Will Matfield succeed as a Bulls coach?   White is probably correct in what he said, I will give Matfield a 20% chance of landing the job.
My advice to  Matfield will be - make sure that Supersport will re-activate your comtract should the need arises.

Victor has a very smart rugby brain. Very tactically aware. Eddie Jones felt compelled to remark on his exceptional attention to detail and memorization. My concern is his lack of experience coaching. Having the x's and o's in order is one thing, running a team is quite another. I felt time as an assistant would have been a logical introduction into the coaching world.

There was some story over the last three weeks about Erasmus involvement in the Bulls rugby set-up and it was even implied that Erasmus may take on the Bulls coaching role.

I doubted the story and in the end Erasmus denied it.   Erasmus is  already  carrying two jobs - the SARU Director of Rugby and Chief Coach.   Even though Erasmus is work- coholic tendency is obvious, another job would be unthinkable.

Matfield was in fact a failure as attack coach of the Bulls and they were happy to let him go when he applied for it to go and play for Northampton.

I think Bulls committee considering an appointment of a coach and assistant coach of which Erasnus is the chairman - would end up in appointing of  Matfield as coach and Du Preez as assistant coach,  In such a case the situation could end up in Erasmus becoming their mentor giving help in their development in the coaching field - hence the original story of about three weeks ago.

It would be ridiculous to discredit Matfield as a coach based on the Bulls attack, the whole Bulls setup has been a shambles for the best part of 5 years. Matfield is definitely a player I could see converting into a decent coach given the opportunity.
Du Preez by all accounts has no interest in coaching rugby now that he is retired, if an interview I listen to earlier this year is anything to go by.
The England football association are pushing for former players to become coaches, Frank Lampard at Derby seems to be doing well. Would be smart of us to do the same, there aren't many 'thoroughbred' coaches in SA and former players (our 2007 RWC winners at that) could refresh our rugby with new ideas. A comforting fact that could bode well for the future is how the Boks coached themselves during Peter de Villiers tenure. Meaning that Matfield et al are not wholly without experience.

Listen dimness Matfield started his role with the Bulls only a year later in 2014.   In 2013 he was still employed by Supersport.  He was given a three year contract covering 2014 to 2016 - which he breached in 2015 when  the Bulls management was delighted to release him to play for Northampton.

There is no way that Matfield was a success as the Bulls attack coach - end of story.

Give us something to support the crap that you post. Matfield was the Bulls lineout and attacking coach in 2013. Can you remember how you nearly shat in your best Sunday school dress because of the attacking coach part. Following some persuasion by HM, the Bulls agreed to release him of his coaching contract and re-sign as a player again from 2014. This was copied from his Wikipedia page: “In 2014, Matfield returned to rugby as a player, signing a 2-year playing contract with the Bulls to keep him in the game until the end of 2015.[3]” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Matfield In addition, Matfield intended to finally retire after the 2015 RWC but he was persuaded by Northampton to join them for one final stretch, mainly for them to tap into his experience and abilities to relay his experience. This is what John Mallinder said in September 2015 when Matfield’s move was announced: “Northampton’s director of rugby, Jim Mallinder, expressed his delight at signing one of the world’s most successful second-rows with three Super Rugby titles and three Currie Cup winners’ medals complimenting his World Cup success, and Mallinder feels that his knowledge of the game can help Saints both on and off the field”. https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/rugby/rugby-union/club-rugby/victor-matfield-joins-northampton-saints-rugby-world-cup-winning-lock-joins-aviva-premiership-club-10492072.html Now go find something else to lie about or debunk these FACTS with some form of substantial evidence. Pre retirement Matfield was a legend.

I thought we all agreed on that?

Pretty easy to substabtiate as well.

Wasn't a coincidence that many teams he featured in were successful.

If being a great player translated into being a good/great coach then we'd see a lot more of it than we do. In reality it's pretty rare.

Having experience at the top level is certainly a huge bonus but without that magic coaching spark, it's worthless.

Pity that there giants better system for identifying ex pro's that would make good coaches.

Seems more based on how interested the player is in becoming a coach.

As stated before, i'm no lock master but i felt that him and Bakkies together were a perfect combo and stood us in good stead for most or their careers?

Would the Bulls have had their SR success without Matfield in the mix? Hard to say, but it's difficult to assume that their chances would have improved if he wasnt there. No?

Ceradunce

You keep on quoting BS - why not quote the real story about the breach of coaching contract he had with the Bulls at the end of 2015.

Read he following from Wikipedia about Matfield about what he did in 2013:-

"He eventually enrolled domestically as a SuperSport (TV) presenter for the Super Rugby season. He was also part of the coaching team and served as a line-out consultant for the Blue Bulls provincial rugby team in 2013."

Since when a Line-out Consulting role the same as an  attacking coach role, dim arse.   He could not be a assistant coach while being employed by Supersport.  That contract ran up to the end of 2013 and thereafter he was appointed as assistant coach for attack by the Bulls for three years - during two of those till the end of 2015 he would also play for the team.   The coaching part is the agreement he breached to go and play for Northampton.

If people haven't already, I'd urge them to watch the 2007 RWC Final watch along with Jon Smit - it's incredibly enlightening.

Look Matfield may not have been the blood and thunder lock we're used to here but hell he was the most intelligent, and from the sounds of what Smit was saying a lot of his work was done in preparation, watching games of the opposition, by the end of that tournament he apparently new most teams line-out calls.
2015 wasn't ideal as whilst he was never physical, he was even beyond that but it doesn't detract from the player he was at his prime.

No idea how he'll go as a coach, surely he shouldn't be walking into a head coach job at the bulls though?

Matfield was the MOM in a world cup final.....saved our bacon with a brilliant goal line tackle of Tait. But he is 10lbs too light for SA fans, who hilariously want to play offload rugby, but are still so stuck in kragdadigheid that they can't accept that compromise.

Mozart

I never had a problem with Mozart - other than perhaps his too frequent presence amongst the centers - but I did credit him as a top player by 2007 and never really criticized him before 2011 either. .

However,  he should never have returned to play rugby in 2014.  He did massive damage to his reputation by doing that,   He was not the player he used to be in the prime and that is the reason for criticism by many previous players and many in the general public.

You definitely seem to have a problem in your top story. Let me show you step by step how "deur die kak" you are.

Step 1. You start off with this statement:

"Matfield was in fact a failure as attack coach of the Bulls and they were happy to let him go when he applied for it to go and play for Northampton."

Step 2. Blikkies says that the Bulls had problems for the last five years. He said this:

"Posted by: Shezza (2105 posts) Oct 24, 2018, 13:11

It would be ridiculous to discredit Matfield as a coach based on the Bulls attack, the whole Bulls setup has been a shambles for the best part of 5 years."

Step 3. My response to Blikkies' remark was this:

"I have no idea when Ou Maaikie is going to stop believing his own lie. The last time Matfield was involved in coaching the Bulls, they won the SA conference in SR. That, coincidentally, was five years ago in 2013."

Step 4. You jump back in, boots and all, saying the following:

"Listen dimness Matfield started his role with the Bulls only a year later in 2014.   In 2013 he was still employed by Supersport.  He was given a three year contract covering 2014 to 2016 - which he breached in 2015 when  the Bulls management was delighted to release him to play for Northampton. "

Take careful note. You said, in this post, that he started his tenure at the Bulls in 2014.

Step 5. I once again remind you how upset you, yourself, were when the Bulls used him as an attacking coach, aside from his role as a line-out coach.

"Matfield was the Bulls lineout and attacking coach in 2013. Can you remember how you nearly shat in your best Sunday school dress because of the attacking coach part."

Step 6 . And then comes the best little pearl of wisdom. You decide, no kak, Matfield was line-out coach for the Bulls in 2013, by quoting from his Wikipedia page:

"He was also part of the coaching team and served as a line-out consultant for the Blue Bulls provincial rugby team in 2013."

That was exactly what I was trying to tell you right from the start. Matfield was part of the Bulls' coaching set-up in 2013, WHEN THEY WON THE FARKING SA CONFERENCE. Check step 3. I highlighted that part of my quote of the post where I said exactly that.

In summary, I said that he was involved in coaching at the Bulls in 2013 when the won the SA Conference. You then say that he was with them in 2014 before making an about turn by saying that I am talking kak and that he was indeed with them in 2013. You cannot make this shit up.

Dofdoos

He could not be anything bar a Consultant for line-outs as long as he was contracted by Supersport and that was in 2013,   For that he ahd to have permission of Supersport.  That had F#cj0akk tio do with attack coach duties,

His Attack Assistant Coach contract started in 2014 and was supposed to end in 2016.   In the period up to the WC he in terms of that contract could play in matches for the Bulls.  He breached that contract in 2015 and had to be released by the Bulls.

They gave that permission because he failed as attack coach and was even worse as a player.

I sometimes wonder whether the Stupidity record you set in idiocy will ever be broken within the next thousand years.   Best advice stop talking shit and it might be,

Jirre. You are unbelievably thick. You, personally confirmed what I said, ie that Matfield was involved in the coaching setup at the Bulls in 2013. You, yourself, even quoted a piece from his Wikipedia page, confirming what I have said and then you turn around and say that it is BS. HTF do you square that up? “His Attack Assistant Coach contract started in 2014 and was supposed to end in 2016”. Have you lost your marbles? I have shown you all the evidence that he was a player again from 2014. Step back a minute. He started playing again the year before the RWC. The RWC was in 2015. If he started playing again the year before the RWC, then pray tell HTF could he have started coaching in 2014? Now, just to rub your nose into it even more. Check this article. NB. Check the date of the article. 21 November 2012 — 12:18pm JOHANNESBURG: Retired Springboks player Victor Matfield, once touted the world's best lock, has been appointed a coach at his former team the Northern Bulls, the club said on Tuesday. The 35-year-old will be the forwards and attack coach for the 2013 season after he worked for the team in a consulting role this year. "I am excited to work with the coaches in their new roles and believe we have the right mix of personalities, skills and expertise to make 2013 a success," said Bulls coach Frans Ludeke. "Someone like Victor has so much experience to give back to our players and I am very excited to work with one of the sharpest rugby minds in the business." https://www.smh.com.au/sport/rugby-union/victor-matfield-to-coach-the-bulls-20121121-29p6r.html Let me repeat that one part again. “......after he worked for the team in a consulting role this year”. Did you notice that? He was in a consulting role in the year that this article was written and that was in the year 2012. The article clearly state that he was talking up a role as the forward and line-out coach. Did you get that or should I repeat that again? Looks like you have just suffered another PSG blow. Be sure to get the licence plate number of that lorry. The one that just dumped that massive load of egg on your face.

IO put in Mozart's name when referring to Matfield.   Sorry bout that - but you are as defective as an Aalst as Matfield was as a player when he returned to play after his retirement in 2011 and he was worse as an attack coach in 2014 and  2015.

Ceradnce was talking the equivalent BS since neither of you three knows shit about employment contracts.   Matfield was on contract to do commentating and rugby panel discussions.   With perfmission he could do consultancy work outside of his contract.   He did not have a contract with the Bulls to be attack assistant coach  in 2013 - since that would mean he would leave to the termination of his contract.

In 2013 he lost a lot of money and needed a higher income than he could get at Supersport so he terminated that contract at the end of 2013.   That dim idiot Ludeke had appointed him as attack coach of the Bulls and it was the start of serious problems for the Bulls.

The so-called attack of the Bulls went pearshaped and  Matfied performances was a joke in bad taste as a player.   Ultimately the team got so poor that  Ludeke ended up losing his Bulls contract at the end of 2015 and Rossouw (Slap Chips) resigned, as backline coach.   That left Matfield as attack coach and when he asked the Bulls to release him from his contract obligation  as attack assistant coach  they could not believe their luck and gave him permission.

That was the factual situation - but then Ceradunce went ballistic about the simple issue as to Meyer's termination of contract as well.   One must believe that story that Meyer opted out voluntarily - he did opt out in a sense that he withdrew his candidature for the post of SA coach - but legally it means bugger-all.   He withdrew his candidature because he realized h e had zero chance of getting the contract renewal.  Legally his contract was terminated - which is equal to firing of a permanent employee in the case of incompetence.

Ag for farking crying out loud. For once and for al. VICTOR MATFIELD WAS THE FUCKING FORWARD AND ATTACKING COACH FOR THE BULLS IN 2013. Let me repeat that. VICTOR MATFIELD WAS THE FUCKING FORWARD AND ATTACKING COACH FOR THE BULLS IN 2013. You have actually confirmed it yourself when you quoted from his Wikipedia page and then, by some bloody miracle you went ahead and contradict yourself immediately afterwards. Matfield started playing again in 2014, the year prior to the 2015 RWC. Why can’t you get that into that cavity between your ears?

LISTEN DIMNESS - HE COULD NOT HAVE TWO EMPLOYMENT CONTRACTS OPERATING AT THE SAME TIME.   GET OVER YOUR BS IGNORANCE AND LYING AND SHOW SOME SENSE FOR A CHANGE.

HE WAS LINE-OUT CONSULTANT FOR THE BULLS  AND THAT WAS WHERE IT ENDS.  HE TERMINATED HIS SUPERSPORT CONTRACT AT THE END OF 2013 AND ENTERED INTO A NEW THREE YEAR CONTRACT WIIH THE BULLS ALLOWING HIM TO PLAY FOR THE BULLS AS WELL.   ARE YOU TOO STUPID TO REALIZE THAT

IF THAT WAS NOT THE CASE HE COULD HAVE PLAYED FOR THE BULLS IN 2013 ALREADY,

YOU TALK ABOUT CAVITY BETWEEN MY YEARS - YOURS ARE FILLED WITH SH!T INSTEAD OF A BRAIN.   IDIOCY REACHES A NEW LEVEL IN YOUR CASE.

Let me try this again. Evidence 1. 21 November 2012 — 12:18pm JOHANNESBURG: Retired Springboks player Victor Matfield, once touted the world's best lock, has been appointed a coach at his former team the Northern Bulls, the club said on Tuesday. "Someone like Victor has so much experience to give back to our players and I am very excited to work with one of the sharpest rugby minds in the business." https://www.smh.com.au/sport/rugby-union/victor-matfield-to-coach-the-bulls-20121121-29p6r.html Evidence 2. He started playing again in 2014, the year that you claim to be the year in which he was coaching with the Bulls. Let me repeat from his Wikipedia page, his playing time for the Boks: “2000–2011 & 2014–2015 South Africa (tests) 127 (35)”

So the newspaper report is correct and the legal situation is not.  Typical.

No. The facts are correct. I have given you a number of pieces of evidence to prove my point. You only have one, which is your assertion that he cannot be an assistant coach and a sports commentator at the same time. But let me give you one more chance. Name his first game for the Bulls since coming out of retirement and pray that it was not a game in 2014 because that would have been a game after, according to you, he became an assistant coach for the Bulls. Alternatively explain this. If he came out of retirement the year before the RWC, then HTF could he have been an assistant coach in 2014?

Newspaper reports are now evidence - never is that any evidence in any court of law.   Legal contracts are.

Two questions: 1. What was Matfield’s role with the Bulls in 2014. Player or assistant coach? 2. Could you provide us with Matfield’s Supersport contract so we can see whether it explicitly said that he was not allowed to coach the Bulls while commentating for them?

Assistant Attack Coach on a three year contract running from 2014 to 2016.

No Dofdoos you are the BSter claiming  that Matfield did not have a contract with Supersport to do commentator and related duties in 2013 .    You are the one who claimed that he also had a contract with the Bulls.

So get those contracts yourself - stupid moron.
