Silver Mountain . . .

Tomorrow at Kenilworth, the outstanding 3 year old filly Silver Mountain will attempt to become only the second filly to win the Cape Fillies Guineas and then go on to beat the colts in the Cape Guineas. Star Effort did the double back in 1991 but the difference was that she had a month's rest between the two races while Silver Mountain is only getting a two week break.
I'm backing Silver Mountain to do the job tomorrow and go on to become one of the greats of South African racing. The last time I was this excited about a racehorse was when the mighty Horse Chestnut was obliterating his rivals over 15 years ago. 
If you want to see why I rate this filly so highly, here is her performance in the Fillies Guineas. 
She'll have it tougher than that against the colts and Noah From Goa in particular was an impressive winner of the Dingaans at Turffontein when he beat New Predator in a humdinger . . . but I think we'll be seeing a new champion tomorrow.

 Uh-oh Your tip was the hot favourite paying $1.70 on the NSW tote, mine was a 60/1 roughie. Besides that you were the dope who hyped up the donkey with a bible reading arrival of the new South African champion. What went wrong...Clown?

 Since there is no rugby and no cricket either - I have been watching racing and cleaned up with winning R2700 this week.  Not bad going.   However, it is a headache and a lot of studying of the races on TV and no real pleasure at all.   
There are a few nevers to be borne in mind.  Never bet on Aussie horses - never bet on US races - the Mafia decides the winner.   J have never seen so many odds-on horses losing races as happened in those two countries - 3/10 has a 4O% winning chance - if that.
Back the Jockeys - not the horses.  Backing Anthony Delpech, Gavin Lerena (and even his brother) with Marcus and Mawing also a consideration - is always a good option.       I did not think that Silver Mountain would win the race - Preferred Noah from Goa.

Back in the years before TV, my uncle used to film the races at Fairview and Arlington racecourses in Port Elizabeth for the stipendiary stewards in case there was an objection. I must have been about 9 or 10 years old when he took me and my brother with him. I can safely say I've loved horseracing ever since those days and I don't need to have money down to enjoy watching a race . . . whether it's a maiden plate, the Durban July Handicap or the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. 
I love the excitement, the noise, the colour, the cross-section of society at any racetrack and the spectacle of watching thoroughbred racehorses doing what they do best. I've followed South African and international horseracing my whole life and I've never got anything but pleasure from the sport . . . even when the horse I've backed comes nowhere. 
Racing is the Sport of Kings with literally centuries of history and tradition. If you get no pleasure from racing then let me be the first to suggest you try something else.

When I went to Durban in 1974 I started to go to the races and became a close friend of Joy Barendse - as well as their daughter Kerry who married Aubrey Roberts and the Roberts family.  Aubreys daughters married Glyn Schofield and Jeff Lloyd and - even though the whole crowd move to Australia in 2007 I am still in close contact with them.
For years they gave me a members or owners batch and I rarely missed Saturday races.  One of the funny things was that when I entered the course the scroungers and chancers would descend on me to get tips.  
The problem was that at one stage with a salary of R550 a month the turnover in my bank account a month was R17 000 - in the early 1980's that was a lot of money.  Easy come easy go.   However, I stopped going to the races when moving to Tinley Manor and the last time I went was the last day Glyn was riding in SA and they invited me to join a party in a suite they booked for the day.
I still watch racing on TV and I have a World Sports Betting account at present,  That allows me to bet through the internet.  I did not put money on Silver Mountain, But took a Bipot on the races and include Silver Mountain and Noah From Goa in the final leg - nice return for the R80 I invested, got R580 in return.
Unless I have a strong feeling about a horse I would put R10 on a race - when I do I put up to R200 on and in the latter case every time I did the said horse would win.

In my case, it's a desire to get back to rugby so we stop losing decent posters who are getting understandably sick and tired of Baboon-ou's attention-seeking.
