Simon Zebo, ex-Ireland wing and current pundit, has thrown down the gauntlet to the Springboks, declaring that Ireland's playing style is perfectly engineered to dismantle the South African defense. This assertion comes hot on the heels of Eben Etzebeth's controversial remarks branding the Irish as "arrogant" during their last World Cup encounter, a comment that has evidently stoked the fires within the Irish camp.

Zebo, speaking to Planet Rugby, emphasized the strategic advantage Ireland holds, "Ireland has the style to beat them because of Ireland’s short passing. When that structure and shape is done well, the defence that you’ll have the most joy against is a team like South Africa, who have out-and-out line speed and come at you." He detailed how Ireland relishes playing against teams like the Springboks, exploiting their aggressive defense with nimble, close-quarter passing.

The stakes are high as Ireland looks to extend their recent dominance over South Africa, having clinched victories in four out of their last five encounters since 2016. With a fresh triumph over Australia fueling their campaign, Zebo confidently asserts,

"Ireland definitely have the tools to hand South Africa their first loss of the autumn series."

Reflecting on the past, particularly the 2023 World Cup clash where Ireland toppled South Africa, Etzebeth’s post-match comments still resonate as a motivational tool for the Irish. Etzebeth had remarked on a rugby podcast,

"Probably 12 out of the 23 when I shook the hands told me, ‘See you guys in the final.’"

He criticized the Irish for their overconfidence, especially with a looming quarter-final against New Zealand— a match Ireland subsequently lost.

Zebo brushed off Etzebeth’s claims, questioning the veracity of such widespread bravado, "I was surprised [Etzebeth said what he did], I just didn’t really believe it,” he noted, acknowledging that while it might have been an exaggeration, it certainly added an extra layer of intrigue to their rivalry.

As Ireland gears up to challenge a physically imposing Springbok side, Zebo outlined the critical areas of focus, "With Ireland’s style of play, it’s very dangerous if you make errors. If there’s lots of handling errors you will get punished immediately." He highlighted the importance of maintaining speed and precision at the breakdown to counter the physicality of the South Africans.

With both teams boasting strategies refined by top-tier coaching, including Irish influences in the South African camp through coaches Jerry Flannery and Felix Jones, the upcoming clash in Dublin is poised to be a tactical showdown. Although the bookmakers have pegged Ireland as underdogs, the history and current form suggest a fiery contest is on the horizon.
