What's petty about pointing out that week after week the Bools centre pairing, who you would pick for the Boks, contribute nothing tangiible, ball in hand. What's petty about pointing our Steppie is slow and unable to tackle in space and JJ can only cling on...at best.
These two guys have been groomed to play for the Boks. Their obvious weaknesses are a matter of concern.

Small Smith did have a good game, he looks strong with ball in hand. The question is , will the Bulls star him next w eek? I think he deserves the chance

For crying in a bucket Shezza, how many data points do we need. Can Steppie do anything except step off his right foot? I haven't even seen him step off the left. Can JJ make a low tackle on a player breaking outside him....the norm for centre play for he last 110 years.
These guys do not have a divine right to the Bok centre positions. When both on the park they have been outplayed the Sharks centres and the Lions centres, let alone the overseas combinations they have encountered.
Nothing magical is going to change if they are picked in tests. Serfontein will still step inside and will be targeted by opposition loosies for turnovers. JJ will still be disconnected with the flow of play...and woe betide us if he has to deal with an opponent in space near our line.
It's not a combination that could possibly give us an advantage over RC opponents.

Shezza, take your tongue out of Dave's arse and form your own opinion.Between you and Dave you know fuck all.
I am still having a laugh at Dave's post trying to convince me JP was brilliant when he was at best, average to solid.
Dave's backline so far (likely to change every hour to include new players who make a break for their clubs and are too young to grow a beard).
9. Hougaard10. Jantjies11. ??12. Serfontein13. JJ14. Le Roux15. Taute
Fucken hell. Can I play against that team please??Why dont you put Pistorius on the wing at your vacant 11 spot Dave. He has the pace and can form a formiddable combo with his mate Hougaard!

I agree with with Shezza. You are petty and bloody impossible to have a logical discussion with.
You started off with an attack on Engelbrecht. I think most members other than Saffex agree that Engelbrecht is not for the Springboks the answer at 13 - but you persist in supporting two players for that position - Fourie and De Jongh. Lets face facts - All three mentioned players should not be in the frame.
However, lets analyse the situation as to Small-Smith further. William played outside of Pollard - a flyhalf who was an excellent contributor to the much improved Bulls backline performance. It shows us that a backline can perform with a flyhalf able to read games and ensure that he takes options which is to the benefit of his team. You write an unbelievable praise song about the hopeless and slow Steyn. who after nine matches still have not made a single line break and whose main fault is he is clueless about reading of the game and a major contributor to the poor attacking form of the Sharks backline and the team inability to score tries. Players missed tackles - but in a winning team Francois Steyn missed 40% of all attempted tackles - yet he is praised by you and the fact that he is poor in defense is exonerated by your reference to hi s "missing a few tackles". Everyone else is condemned. So I assume that De Jongh - whose non-existent defense is exonerated by him "missing a few tackles". The latter nearly cost the Stormers their victory by missing 75% of his attempted tackles.
There is no logic in your case and your praise songs on some useless players you support and your condemnation of players you dislike is an indication of a person with a warped mind.

So now Small Smith makes breaks because Pollard was in there instead of Potgieter....the childishness of some of this pablum is amazing. Fortunately Oom the coach is going to agree with me....I'd hate to spend the whole RC watching your pathetic backline being outplayed.

I sometimes think your knowledge of rugby is seriously defective. The functioning of backline players are largely influenced by what the pivot - the flyhalf - comes up with. Proper reading of the game by the flyhalf - coupled to effective and judicial passing by the flyhalf and inside center especially - determine largely what an outside center can achieve.
I do not think that Potgieter is a particularly good reader of the game and although better in that respect than the Steyns - his game does not really allow for too many opportunities wider out. In that respect Pollard is better.
Incidentally I'd hate to spend the whole RC watching the pathetic Francois Steyn causing our backline to malfunction and be outplayed. In any event he is off to Japan after the Super 15 and it would be better for the Sharks if he leaves now. So he is not going to be available for the RC - more than happy about that one.

Seriously Mike, could you fuck right up about François Steyn, so sick you threadjacking every fucking thread just to slag off either Francois Steyn, Alberts, Mayfield or JDJ...you don't rate them we get it FFS.
04 May 2014, 15:47#12
Stats don't take anything into context. They're essentially useless when judging a player. I watched Beale yesterday in particular, he used the fabled inside step more times than you could have imagined. He's a creator, JJ said that player with Serfontein is easy because he creates so much space for his center partner, Small-Smith benefited from this yesterday.
Boklogic, shut up pal. You don't a clue what you're talking about. Just because I don't have a rant towards people on their differing opinions to who they think is a good player and who is not doesn't mean I share the same opinion. I get involved when people slate players I think are quality. So just because I don't attack Dave about his opinion on JJ doesn't mean I think JJ is a good player, personally I think he has been poor this season.
For the record my Bok backline would look a little like this
15. Le Roux 14. JP 13. Sadie 12. De Villiers 11. Habana 10. Goosen 9. Du Preez

I am basically in favour of your backline - but would play De Allende ahead of JP at this stage. Alternatively I would play Mvovo at full back. Le Roux on the wing and play De Allende at 13.
When Sadie left WP for the Bulls his nickname was "Slim" Sadie. His game was killed by the Bulls and back with the Cheetahs - his nick name is back with a vengeance. Like what I saw of him and when he and Le Roux combined there is dynamite in evidence.
Based on the above I would like to see the backline built around the players you mentioned with Mvovo, Lambie and De Allende added to the mix. They could come off the bench when necessary or can start leaving three other players suggested to be on the bench. To fill up the complement of players further I would add Jordaan in as well and we need another scrummie as well - Pretorius, Reinach, Hougaard?
I am not happy with what Engelbrecht showed thus far and I think that De Villiers has been iffy this year - one good game followed by a bad performance.
In dealing with the above - I think the Springbok squad traditionally consist of 26 players - 11 backline players and 15 forwards. That 11 could be made up by the players the two of us mentioned.
Some of the players mentioned are getting very long in the tooth - Habana, De Villiers and Du Preez - and we should build towards the day they are not available anymore.
04 May 2014, 16:30#14
My 11 backline players in the Bok squad would be:
Outside backs - Le Roux, Habana, JPCenters - De Villiers, Sadie, Serfontein, De Allende (Covers wing as well) Flyhalf - Lambie, GoosenScrumhalf - Du Preez, Reinach
Others that would be pushing for includion would be Mvovo, Hougaard and Hendricks.
I would keep De Villiers, Habana and Du Preez because they're still the best in their positions. I also think they will be good enough for the RWC.

Serfontein is not producing what most expected from him at Super Rugby level.
Not sure what it is but this talented youngster seems to be struggling a tad.
Is it the Bulls game plan? Will he do better elsewhere?
JJ is just plain useless ... always will be. Small-Smith made it abundantly clear to all those who would see that JJ is a very poor option at 13 and definitely not Bok material.
Meyer has wasted his time at the helm preparing the Bokke for the coming WC.
Masses of talent have past him by unnoticed, meaning he'll probably be forced to go with the experienced boys of yesteryear.
It's a pity. Instead of forcing the Meyer era into the history books, he's merely extended the White era of 2007 with a mix of Snorre to give the whole setup a feel of unprepared incompetence.
Meantime we have a Ozzie side saturated with talented young blood, an All Black side getting their house in order, looking more and more threatening every week, a Pommie side that could surprise everyone and an Irish side that certainly showed signs of possibly contending for the world crown.
We here in South Africa have the likes of Hougat, Frans Steyn, Matfield, Jaque Fourie, Du Preez, Morne Steyn, JJ, Kolisi, Janie Du Plessie, Ruan Pienaar, Bakkies Botha, Kirchner, Basson, Goosen and probably Pierre Spies to look forward to at next year's WC.
Whoop de friggin do ... look so forward to it.

Cleancut
If Meyer picks Hougaard and Goosen it would be fine - if he picks anyone of Frans Steyn, Matfield, Jaque Fourie, Morne Steyn, JJ, Kolisi, Janie Du Plessie, Ruan Pienaar, Bakkies Botha, Kirchner, Basson and Pierre Spies he should be in the lunatic asylum together with Mozart to keep him company.
A more past it and useless lot one can hardly imagine. I hope he has the foresight to buy wheelchairs for the geriatrics as well. Lets look at it fairly -
* Francois Steyn - the worst performing center and flyhalf (other than goalkicking) in any SA Super 15 side;
* Matfield who is limited to line out jumping and bugger all else;
* Jacque Fourie with no speed and no attack ability and even question marks in defense (Davies).
* Morne Steyn - the Stade Francais bench player who gets up to 10 minutes game time in most matches and even bugger up in those 10 minutes;
* JJ - who struggles because he cannot read games and run straight at the first defender;
* Kolisi - who struggles to make the Stormers starting line up - poor Super 15;
* Jannie du Plessis - can he tackle and handling balls?
* Ruan Pienaar under-performed for Ulster this year;
* Bakkies Botha - flopped in the EOYT tests in 2013 - showed noting;
* Kirchner - is he still playing rugby - knows nothing about his recent games;
* Basson - can he tackle at all?
* Spies - Jane is not doing anything on the rugby field - while Tarzan is flexing his muscles.

You really do not know anything about rugby. The management of Stade Francais knows exactly what Morne Steyn can produce and they are using him accordingly - as a kind of back up 10 that can only do one thing correctly - kick at goal - and for the rest bugger up the games completely.
But then one has to admit 0 anybody who believes Francois Steyn should play at 10 is really rugby ignorant and a complete waste of time to discuss rugby issues with.

Ha, ha what a bloody insult.......Moz I take it you never saw the game? The kid did absolutely nothing bar one step and he once ran a good line.......what a bloody joke. And your stats are rubbish......he was on the field for 50 min and beat 2 defenders and gained all of 29m.........JJ was only on the field for 30 min and beat a defender......try again.
Small-Smith was at best solid, talk about talking a player up only because you hate JJ so.......Moz this is all becoming a little childish. Small-Smith did nothing of note.
Serfontein was again the best SA 12 on display, I take it you missed his great break?
Did Jean play on the weekend.......not to mention de Jongh confirming he cant tackle as early on as minute 5........now these two are the real concerns
de Jongh - 1 tackle made and wait for it 3 missed - case closed I think???

Dimwit De Jongh played in four games and he did well in two - for the rest he was bullshit and his defense a bad joke. In the last two games he made 7 tackles and missed 6 . What do you rate his defense as with a more than 46% missed tackle ratio. Talking bullshit again - please get real.
