Chris Smith made waves in the Varsity Cup - a top class thinking inside center - and he was the player o the Tournament, This is the guy whom Erasmus should keep an eye on - he is twice the player at center compared to the unthinking Fat Fransie an d slow Esterhuizen, We can do with a class inside center and is a player with a bright future.
I just hope he's chosen the right franchise, one who can advance his skills, not one that turns him into a robot.

Somehow I do not think he is - as far as I know he studied engineering and that you cannot do while playing professional ru gby.

There are NFL players who studied engineering (whether chemical, civil or electrical) whilst maintaining their game and learning the playbook for their new franchise. In fact, Colts QB Andrew Luck got his Master's Degree as a Stanford Engineer major early and still memorised the entire Colts playbook before camp started! So, I say nyet.

If you have time for pro rugby while studying Medicine or Engineering, you are either a genius or doing it wrong.
In SA, engineering is four years of full day classes during the week...there are simply not enough time for a pro team sport in that program...unless you skip classes...or practice is only one hour in the evening.

I can only speak from my experience in the early 90's. M ost undergrads were 3 year degrees back then. B.Com, B.Sc, B.Juris, B.Rek and B.A. Since then the curriculum has been stretched to 4 years for obvious reasons.
B.Ing at Stellenbosch and B.Sc Engineering at UCT were 4 year degrees back then, with compulsory full classes and tutorials 5 days a week...and lots of students didn't complete it in only 4 years. Most students studied a further 3 hours every evening too.
The 3 year courses had lots of afternoons off and a far lighter work load than the Engineers. The B.Com Law and Medicine 1st years guys were the only other students who had a full roster.
I can't speak for today, but back then engineering students had an insane workload and there is no way that they would have been able to play pro rugby while studying.

Pretoria University engineering degree is a 5 year curriculum - but a friend of mine took 7 years and only completed his degree because he met a medical student - whom he later married and who insisted that he studies with her in the evening.
I knew the son of a previous Secretary of Forestry who took 8 years and who had the biggest tires on his Mini I ever saw on any car. More interested in sex and enjoyment than in his studies,
The other famous student was Carel du Plessis - who spent 6 years a Stellenbosch and never got any credits at all.
Then there was another famous student at Stellenbosch - who had a classic reputation for stories of his student years at Stellenbosch . One of the stories was that he once took a bet with somebody that they would travel to Gordons Bay and back in a car without an engine. He won the bet. They took the car to a place just outside Stellenbosch and pretended that the car broke down, Somebody stopped and towed the car to Gordons Bay - same story coming back. Then there was the story about a three week trip to the Kruger Park - after a week he phoned a friend who asked him whether they saw a lot of animals. He said no - they are still in Paarl and the pa rties are great. Must be getting old forget the name of the rascal - maybe Draad can enlighten us,
The late Oom Koos Meyer...died in the same car accident as Tolla I think.
You only got to take longer than a year extra to complete a course if you were really good at rugby or cricket, otherwise you got kicked out fast.
Maaik, my favorite Koos Meyer storie was about a snake bite on a hunting trip....trying to find it.
Sure - it was Koos Meyer. I met him in Pretoria in the 1960's. He was at that stage stryiong to keep his escapades at Stellenbosch away from his grandchildren. Really a funny guy,
