....are refs fair game. Or do we just accept rulings from on high as one sanctimonious Board member suggests? Firstly we need to congratulate Peyper for having the guts to do this, although I do wonder if Hansen betrayed a confidence. Still even if it was intended to be  a private admission, it sets a new standard in transparency.

But it also points out refs can be very wrong and need to be open to input during the game. Too often objections from one side are summarily tossed out. And ref performance needs to be openly judged if we want to make progress, not just handled within the referee club.

The Springboks lost a good chance of winning the RWC through the amazing incompetence and perhaps bias of Bryce Lawrence. That's a high price to pay and will happen more often if refs aren't openly held accountable.

When brain surgeons, CEO's and heads of state are routinely assessed, why should rugby refs get a pass? Out with the dark smoky rooms, in with the bright light.

I don't know why Peyper did this, he certainly cut Kaplan off at the knees.

The problem of course is there aren't that many top class refs around. Drop someone like Peyper and you're very likely going to get someone even less competent and experienced in his place.

I also think the problem is less with the referees and more with rugby's complicated rules which need a lot of interpretation in a split second on the field. There's always going to be a certain level of inaccuracy. How many times does it take us a few slow-mo replays to decide whether a ref made the right call at a ruck? The refs don't have that luxury on the field, they have to make an immediate decision based on the part of the action they were actually able to see.

Ofcourse we cannot read into the man's motives but maybe he's got integrity.

Never liked his irritating reffing style...very legalistic and dogmatic...loves the whistle and throwing his little weight about...a little man complex (Napoleon Bonaparte).

Thrives on dishing out cards...there is never a game without one if you're lucky...usually 2 and 3 is not uncommon. These little fellas get a sense of power through this...ofcourse everything within reason and balance but this guy is heavily lopsided in these areas.

Anyway kudos to him for his apparent integrity...this quality I really respect and it takes all types to make up this world...lolz...even old codgers like Mike and Mozart waving their walking sticks at each other in frustration and putting up with that fellow from Mars who landed accidently in Canada and is still learning how to spell words...English is atrocious even worst than Canadians not to mention his neighbours across the way...don't know how a puritan of taste like Mozart can put up with the abuse...lolz.

Good on Peyper for saying that , still dont have any beef with him as he is at least not bent just over officious perhaps combined with a crap days work ? .Critiisim is fine RE:Refs its the abuse both on and offline thats on the nose .The attitude of "blame the ref" has filtered into the real world in the form of verbal and physical abuse that is reaching the point where no one wants to ref even the most junior of games .When as a parent on the sidelines you have to physically intercede to protect a young feller trying to ref a bunch of wee kiddies its gone way to far [ as I have done a while back ]Rugby has always been a more complex team game than most as Seb alludes too especially the breakdown , unless you want to get rid of that portion of the game then we just have to lie with it .Still the best game bar none .

bulldust ya'll, the problem isn't new zealand cheating or rules being complicated just refs and the organization they work for being corrupt. its god damn obvious that match fixing is going on and its here that its happening! thats it. they have lazer x-ray eyes when they suit them to find the most inane offence but when it suits them they just completely dictate who wins loses. it doesnt help that the stupid thick money paws at the irb want the refs to use the rules to manipulate HOW teams play as well! so that's the problem right there. i mean look at joubert in the world cup final. he literally turned his head away from new zealand to avoid seeing offences. he doesnt do stuff like that normally. even lawrence in the qf against us, he was never great but he never ever reffed like that in his life. they are being told what to do. where money is involved there are threats and murky dealings and its obvious to everyone but the most stupid of thickos.

you bend games you get paid. its a common thing in sport wardud. and the irb does protect its cashcow thats a fact. everything does have to suit the all blacks. when new zealand demanded llaw changes they got it even though the whole world was against it... twice! look if you cant see that something is really wrong with the game, if you think its all sqeeky clean and honest then fine. but thats just frikin naive at best old man.

According to a whinging Hansen Peyper admited he got it wrong. Is he to be believed? How come Kaplan posting on a site frequented by refs says both yellows were justified. He would not want to be wrong on such a site surely!Further the serial zed zone offences of the wee abs are well kno wn and far past being cynical.
Hats off to Peyer and Kaplan for making a stand!
Ou rooitiwt battles with the concept of fair play.  The refs are beyond reproach at all time in his very naive world. It does of course take backbone to stand up and say it's wrong. And therein lies ou rooitwits problem methinks.

moderating refs helps stamp out cxorruption. if they are under scrutiny then are they going to risk meddling with the result? its not so easy anymore. so it has to be done. if they are beyind reproach then they have carte blanche to just do whatever they want and earn some mega bucks in match fixing.

What all this proves is that all the nonsense written above about world conspiracies, match fixing, corruption, etc. (as all the same bs usually written here by some posters), is just this: nonsenses.

Peyper had a bad day ( a very bad one i would say) and that's all.

How to avoid this is another story. IMO the remedy is very difficult to find. The TMO has been an advance in this sense but any other measure implemented could slow the game in an undesirable way, as pakie said the rugby rules are very complicated and need a lot of interpretation.

The only thing to do is to accept it as part of the game. Refs are humans and can make mistakes, it's in coaches' and teams' hands to get over it.

If a team is not able to get over the refs' mistakes, as it happened to the AB last sat because all the mistakes they did, they'll draw or lose the game and have to accept it, both teams and fans

ab ass I am sure you would love "to accept it as part of the game". However the sides being shafted won't so its a pipe dream!
Clean up the game and get rid of refs who dont perform. Allow the TMO to intevene when a try scroring mistake has occurred or when a penalty is clearly wrong?
We dont want to slow up the game but we als o dont want manipulated results.

Conspiracies are the bolt holes of losers with nothing else to add to a conversation , those whose teams are not winning as much or indeed at all against the ABS are especially prone to this.Pffttttttt

Who was the dweeb then who said this is all to bring the abs back to the trailing pack. hahahahhahahahaha a kbbs conspirator.
Fact is warDUD you oaks have been found out. Continue infringing in the red zone and hopefully the yellows will continue to flow. Also expect more scrum penalties if ou crockked scrums inwards etc or macaaw does his thing etc.
I humbly suggest the kbbs admit their folly, come clean and move on. For the sake of rugby!
Thanks

Your a halfwit always have been with your constant garbage about refs supposedly aiding the ABS for what ? the last 130 years ? So tell me dopey just exactly what benefit do refs or the IRB have to gain from aiding the ABS ? One  coherent sentence will ,nope nothing eh ? Truth is it would mean more money in their coffers if the ABS would lose more  often like here in Oz where wallies fans have lost heart and numbers are down .And if the ABS are getting all this help then why only 2 RWCs ? And tell me this stupid just exactly what has any of your rubbish to do with me ? Unless I am secretly playing test matches without my knowledge ......awesome are'nt I !
