This is so typical. The new inexperienced, frankly unqualified chaps like Kolisi and Cassiem bomb.....and we bring in one of our old heroes to fix everything. How much difference can one player make? Why not include Frans, Habana JP and Pienaar if you want an immediate improvement. Why was Vermeulen not there in the first place so he could be familiar with the team? .. Desperation. .. One could legitimately ask why our whole backline is on this tour. They have all had more chances than test players had in half a career in the old days. Why is Jessie Kriel there just as one example. In his first two or so tests he scored a few nice tries cutting onto the ball. Since then nothing. He lost the Japanese test at the death being monstered by his opponent. Has never been a defensive factor with his clinging tackles which yield metres in contact. And he crabs acoss the field presenting a one dimensional challenge. But test after test....there he is. Step and Allende are no better. .. Vermeulen can’t do much to fix this. But if history is anything to go by the humiliated Boks will at least put their bodies on the line against France....something they so clearly were not up for against Ireland.

Mozart
Due to injury Vermeulen had preciously little rugby over the last 18 months.   In his last match for Toulon he was playing - but did nothing to stand out against a very weak team (Agen).   Hope he is not going the Louw way.

I suspect ou Allistair decided before any international rugby started in 2017 that Warren Whiteley will be the captain and thus 8 will be occupied with no room for Thor. Non threatening players like Cassiem will be used at 8 when Warren needed a rest. .... and the cookie crumbled. Vermeulen has our go to 8, and should have remained there because he is still young enough to get to the next World Cup.

Unfortunately, Thor lost his hammer some time ago. He appears to be a shadow of the player he once was.

Blikkies maybe, maybe not insofar as his age is concerned,   Vermeulen has played minimum rugby since his neck injury in 2015 and further injuries in 2016 and 2017.    H is first match since June this year was against the weak Agen team = where he showed very little form.
I do not know whether his major injuries over the last three years would not have a negative impact on his performance on test level ir his career future.

Shark when you watch the new Thor movie, you will see he functions fine without his hammer, tapping his inner Thor.

Have to return to discussion of Vermeulen and his selection for the game tomorrow.   Hope he succeeds - but have my doubts.

SB

You are trying to give Mozart and AO  seizures by bringing this thread back?

In short - I think Thor has lost his hammer and I am afraid indications are he cannot ever recover it.

Lets be objective Vermeulen -

*    looked great in the first two tests against the English in June despite  very low tackle counts and barely average defense:

*    went missing in action in the third England test in June;

*    went off to Japan to avoid the RC; and

*    in the three EOYT tests recently - he was just  about a passenger in the games with abhorrently poor defense in evidence and showing nothing in other facets of the game.

He will be playing for the Bulls in SR and will minimize appearances next year - but hope his reputation will get him into the WC squad.

Sorry - but the hammer is indeed gone - never to be recovered again.

A spent force ... a liability after 15 minutes ... doesn't have the legs ... doesn't have the hunger ... it's best for us all that he returns to Japan and stays there.

Hope he showed something more than he did in the AB test in Wellington where he did zero other than spilling a ball leading to the Goodhue try and in the Japan test where he took kick in balls and did very little else.

He really was not as good as he was in 2015 before his neck injury.

But still leagues better than anybody else......Gatlin at 37 was just beaten by one step in Zurich by the new fastest kid on the planet. Duane might be a bit young.

Listen Mozart

Why did you bring back this item Super Idiot?

As far as I can remember Vermeulen did not play for the Springboks in 2017 because of injuries.   He is now injured  and that is why he did not play in the game on Saturday.   T hat is the kind of BS expected from a closed mind BSter anyway.
