The decline in our defense was evident at times during the Lions series, but nothing like the disaster it was against Oz..which begs the question, has something changed. Or is it just that Nie doesn’t have the time to contribute now that Tweedledumb has distanced himself from the Boks?

Good question. The big difference was that Australia put us through numerous phases. In the first Argie test, we were actually easily beaten on defence; they hurt themselves with silly errors that gifted too many points. The Lions could have done more damage if they used the ball more. They looked very threatening when doing so.

I think the system is stale. It was always a bandaid that worked under fortuitous circumstances in the very short term. I think Josè is smart enough to have forseen that. He placed himself in a position where he could still lap up the plaudits if it worked, but also exit if it didn't. I also believed that staying in SA was part of that self-preservation. Just as we predicted, the karp took the bate.
