Been reading about World War 1 , the ANZAC legends . Also read how South African troops fought to the death taking their orders quite literally so would be interested in any perspectives on the Great War . Do you have a day of remembrance in South Africa for instance ?
We had another war before that one. Anglo-Boer War, go read up on that, before you would be able to understand why the wars after that would not inspire great enthusiasm. There are certain public holidays where these things are remembered by some, but our countree is still too devided for the majority to take notice of things they had no part in and don't understand in the first place.
The Anglo Boer war was over so fast that many joined up for the next one in NZ not wanting to miss anything so i take it there is still unresolved issues between those of English and Dutch ancestory there?Does that mean only those of English descent fought in WW1 and WW2 ?
I was not schooled in SA so my SA history is not that great. I gather though from what I have read that the Boers gave the British a very hard time and proved to be outstanding fighters and the whole thing dragged on much, much longer than anyone expected. Always remember a small band of Boers kept the greatest military power at bay for years.
I do think some Africkaners fought in the WW 1 and 2. Smuts played a very promnent role in WW 2 and was of course an Afrikaner. Many of course supported Germany as was to be expected given British atrocities perpertrated in the Boer war.
I myself am half Afrikaans and half English. Two Afrikaans grandmothers and two English grand fathers. . Fortunately, in my experience, these things are in the distant past. Good relations exist between Afrikaans and English and folk have moved on. Much intermarriage etc etc, attending same schools and universities, work together and play together.
Personally I do not see it as an issue at all and have not over many years experienced it as a problem.
